These settings have proved not to be a fad of the counter-culture but are rather an enduring and growing impetus and response to structural changes in American society. Although these settings are designed in reaction to conventional organizational values, they possess their own internal value conflicts which generate considerable stress among their workers. One avenue of intervention by community psychologists interested in supporting grass-roots efforts at constructive social change and commun ity building is to provide consultation to such settings. This paper describes such a setting in terms of its history and structural conflicts., then goes on to document an interventiuon effort which satisfied the members' needs to deal with their lack of satisfaction in the workplace. The paper documents the exact conflicts which emerged during consultation and how they were handled. Numerous naturally occurring indicators are presented which suggest the effectiveness of this consultation strategy. Addittional dilemmas and explanations for the members' satisfaction are offered."--Abstract
