Download or read book Regulating lobbying written by Raj Chari and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments worldwide are developing sunshine policies that increase transparency in politics, where a key initiative is regulating lobbyists. Building on the pioneering first edition, this book updates its examination of all jurisdictions with regulations, from the Americas, Europe, Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Unlike any book, it offers unique insights into how the regulations compare and contrast against each other, offering a revamped theoretical classification of different regulatory environments and situating each political system therein. This edition innovatively considers different measurements to capture the robustness of lobbying laws in terms of promoting transparency and accountability. And, based on the authors’ experience of advising governments globally, it closes with a no-nonsense guide on how to make a lobbying law. This is of value to policymakers seeking to introduce or amend regulations, and lobbyists seeking to influence this process.

Book Synopsis A Guide to the Immigration Act 2016 by : Alison Harvey
Download or read book A Guide to the Immigration Act 2016 written by Alison Harvey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-25 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Guide to The Immigration Act 2016 is produced in association with ILPA and provides a clear and straightforward explanation to the provisions of this legislation, with relevant commentary following each section of the Act. Those litigating will be able to identify all relevant sources and materials rapidly. Practitioners from other areas of law affected by the provisions in the context of housing, social welfare and employment law will be able rapidly to navigate these complex provisions and to understand them. The UK Government stated that its purpose in bringing forward this legislation was to tackle illegal immigration by making it harder to live and work in the United Kingdom without permission. The Immigration Act 2016 not only makes changes to immigration law and practice but also extends immigration control into other areas such as housing, social welfare and employment to create the 'hostile environment' envisaged. The approach is to summarise each provision of the Act and to set it within both its political and legal context, providing full legal references as well identifying relevant guidance, supporting materials and statements from parliamentary debates. The aim of the publication is to provide practitioners and academic and political commentators with a comprehensive guide to the Act, the bulk of the work being comments on the legal provisions interleaved with each section of the Act.
Book Synopsis Devolution, Law Making and the Constitution by : Robert Hazell
Download or read book Devolution, Law Making and the Constitution written by Robert Hazell and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law making is a primary function of government, and how well the three devolved UK legislatures exercise this function will be a crucial test of the whole devolution project. This book provides the first systematic study and authoritative data to start that assessment. It represents the fruits of a four-year collaboration between top constitutional lawyers from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and leading researchers in UCL's Constitution Unit. The book opens with detailed studies of law making in the period 1999–2004 in the Scottish Parliament and the Assemblies in Wales and Northern Ireland, and how they interact with Westminster. Later contributions look at aspects of legislative partnership in the light of the UK's strongly asymmetric devolutionary development, and also explain the unexpected impact of devolution on the courts. Individual chapters focus on various constitutional aspects of law making, examining the interplay of continuity and change in political, legal and administrative practice, and the competing pressures for convergence and divergence between the different parliaments and assemblies. This book is essential reading for academics and students in law and in politics, and for anyone interested in the constitutional and legal aspects of UK devolution, not least the practitioners and policymakers in London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.
Book Synopsis The Scottish Political System Since Devolution by : Paul Cairney
Download or read book The Scottish Political System Since Devolution written by Paul Cairney and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a narrative of Scottish politics since devolution in 1999. It compares eight years of coalition government under Scottish Labour and the Scottish Liberal Democrats with four years of Scottish National Party minority government. It outlines the relative effect of each government on Scottish politics and public policy in various contexts, including: high expectations for ‘new politics' that were never fully realised; the influence of, and reactions from, the media and public; the role of political parties; the Scottish Government's relations with the UK Government, EU institutions, local government, quasi-governmental and non-governmental actors; and, the finance available to fund policy initiatives. It then considers how far Scotland has travelled on the road to constitutional change, comparing the original devolved framework with calls for independence or a new devolution settlement. The book draws heavily on information produced since 1999 by the Scottish Devolution Monitoring project (which forms one part of the devolution monitoring project led by the Constitution Unit, UCL) and is supplemented by new research on public policy, minority government, intergovernmental relations and constitutional change.

Book Synopsis Proposals for the Devolution of Further Powers to Scotland by : The Stationery Office
Download or read book Proposals for the Devolution of Further Powers to Scotland written by The Stationery Office and published by Stationery Office Books (TSO). This book was released on 2015-03-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Smith Commission's recommendations for the further devolution of powers to Scotland would significantly change Scotland's devolution settlement, adding greater complexity to the relationship between the UK and Scottish Governments. This report considers the Government's proposals for implementing the Smith Commission's recommendations, set out in the Command Paper "Scotland in the United Kingdom: An enduring settlement". The Committee considers the process by which these proposals were produced, and then examines their implications for the constitution of the UK as a whole. The Smith Commission was given only two months to produce its recommendations, and took less than four weeks to produce its proposals once the closing date for public submissions was reached on 31 October 2014. This is not to criticise Lord Smith of Kelvin, nor the members of the Smith Commission, who worked effectively to a tight timetable. Its recommendations are, however, necessarily the result of a short process, with minimal time for consultation and for engagement with the UK and Scottish parliaments. Yet the leaders of the three main UK-wide political parties agreed to implement the recommendations of the Smith Commission in advance of its first meeting. The Committee are deeply concerned that this agreement has pre-empted any possibility of meaningful consultation and discussion on the merits of the proposals with either the Scottish or UK Parliament, or indeed with citizens and civil society both in Scotland and across the UK. In particular, it restricts the capacity of the UK Parliament to contribute to the development of these proposals. Nor does the Smith Commission process meet the standards expected for the production of proposals for significant constitutional change.
