Book excerpt: In business in general, and construction in particular, a battle has long been waged over job safety, and whether or not unions have a beneficial effect in the area of workplace safety. One recent study has even indicated that, contrary to the claims of organized labor, union job sites have higher fatality rates than non-union sites. Our research used different indicators to assess job safety in construction. We utilized nearly 3,000 inspections by OSHA, from 1989 to 1994, to determine whether in fact there were safety differences between union and non-union construction firms. Results indicated that on three major dimensions-lost workday injuries, total violations, and percentage of serious violations -union firms had fewer incidences than non-union organizations. These findings are discussed within the context of project management.

Book excerpt: Provides insights into how health and safety can be more effectively integrated into the procurement, design, and management of construction projects This book aims to explore the ways in which technological, organizational, and cultural strategies can be combined and integrated into construction project management to produce sustained and significant health and safety (H&S) improvements. It looks at design and safety practices, work organization, workforce engagement and learning, and offers ideas for producing systemic change. Integrating Work Health and Safety into Construction Project Management addresses how best to achieve safety in design through the adoption of a stakeholder management approach. It instructs on how to drive H&S improvements through supply chain integration and responsible procurement and project management practices. It examines the components of a culture for health and safety and the development of a cultural maturity model. The book discusses the potential to improve H&S through the provision of conditions of work that afford workers a positive work-life balance. It also covers how advanced technologies and the application of techniques developed from health informatics can support real time analysis and improvement of H&S in construction. Lastly, it looks at the benefits associated with engaging workers and using their tacit H&S knowledge to inform work process improvements. This text also: Provides new and non-traditional ways of thinking about H&S Focuses on technological, organizational, and cultural integration Offers a multi-disciplinary perspective provided by an internationally recognized research team from the social sciences, engineering, construction/project management, and psychology Presents, in detail, the collective analysis from a broad-ranging ten year program of collaborative research Contains a rich range of industry case studies Integrating Work Health and Safety into Construction Project Management is an excellent resource for academics and researchers engaged in research in construction H&S, as well as for postgraduates taking construction project management and H&S courses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As with all previous editions of Project Management in Construction, this sixth edition focuses on systems theory as the approach suitable for organizing and managing people skilled in the design and completion of construction projects. It discusses the many competing paradigms and alternative perspectives available, for example in relation to differentiation and integration, as well as the emerging study of temporary organizations and its relevance to construction project management. Whilst encompassing the need to develop further theoretical aspects of construction project organization theory, this edition has also enhanced the application of organization studies to practical issues of construction project management. More emphasis has been placed on the added complexity of construction project management by issues surrounding clients and stakeholders, and the control and empowerment of project participants. Additional focus has been placed on sustainability issues as they impinge on construction project management, on reworked views on supply chain management and on developments in partnering, together with clarification of the shifting terms and definitions relating to construction organization structures and their uses.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this handbook is to make available to general contractors, consulting engineers, construction managers, specialty contractors, and subcontractors, as well as to professors and students in Universities and technical institutes which offer courses on the subject, the fundamentals of construction management together with the most workable types of organization, and the necessary capabilities they must include to reasonably ensure success and minimize the possibility of failure in this most hazardous profession. The second and equally important purpose is to furnish equipment manufacturers, dealers, material suppliers, bankers, surety bondsmen, and others, who traditionally rely on financial statements and general reputation, something more concrete to look for-the type of management and organization, and its scope and capability-in deciding how far to go along with contractors with whom they deal or wish to deal. This, the second edition of the Handbook, is an updated version of the work published in 1973. The book covers very many subjects which are part of construction. The greatest care was exercised in consideration of their practical aspects based on the theory and practice of construction management and its structure, and the functions of the various departments, both in the field and central offices, that make up construction organization. Leading specialists in their particular fields were selected to write chapters on the vital segments making up the structure of construction management and organization. These fields include construction contracts and conditions, job organization by general types of projects, equipment maintenance and preventive maintenance and overhaul, engineering and estimating, scheduling and controls, data processing and the use of computer equipment in engineering and accounting techniques, office administration, corporate and cost accounting, payroll, employment and labor relations, safety, public relations, legal and contractural problems, banking and finance, taxes, surety bonding, insurance, pension and retirement problems and others.

Book excerpt: Praise for previous editions of The State of Working America: "The State of Working America remains unrivaled as the most-trusted source for a comprehensive understanding of how working Americans and their families are faring in today's economy."--Robert B. Reich"It is the inequality of wealth, argue the authors, rather than new technology (as some would have it), that is responsible for the failure of America's workplace to keep pace with the country's economic growth. The State of Working America is a well-written, soundly argued, and important reference book."--Library Journal "If you want to know what happened to the economic well-being of the average American in the past decade or so, this is the book for you. It should be required reading for Americans of all political persuasions."--Richard Freeman, Harvard University "A truly comprehensive and useful book that provides a reality check on loose statements about U.S. labor markets. It should be cheered by all Americans who earn their living from work."--William Wolman, former chief economist, CNBC's Business Week "The State of Working America provides very valuable factual and analytic material on the economic conditions of American workers. It is the very best source of information on this important subject."--Ray Marshall, University of Texas, former U.S. Secretary of Labor"An indispensable work . . . on family income, wages, taxes, employment, and the distribution of wealth."--Simon Head, The New York Review of Books "No matter what political camp you're in, this is the single most valuable book I know of about the state of America, period. It is the most referenced, most influential resource book of its kind."--Jeff Madrick, author, The End of Affluence "This book is the single best yardstick for measuring whether or not our economic policies are doing enough to ensure that our economy can, once again, grow for everybody."--Richard A. Gephardt "The best place to review the latest developments in changes in the distribution of income and wealth."--Lester ThurowThe State of Working America, prepared biennially since 1988 by the Economic Policy Institute, includes a wide variety of data on family incomes, wages, taxes, unemployment, wealth, and poverty-data that enable the authors to closely examine the effect of the economy on the living standards of the American people.
