Or, la Bible ne contient pas l'ensemble des traditions sur Moise; il existe d'autres legendes chez des auteurs juifs et paiens des epoques perse, hellenistique et romaine. Quelques-unes des traditions que l'on trouve chez ces auteurs sont apparemment aussi anciennes que celles qui ont trouve leur entree dans le document officiel du judaisme. Certaines sont meme a rapprocher d'aspects de Moise apparaissant dans la litterature biblique. Mais on ne peut postuler globalement qu'elles modifient a chaque fois une tradition biblique deja immuable. Ce volume est issu d'une rencontre entre chercheurs en sciences bibliques, en sciences des religions et en histoire du judaisme et du christianisme, des Universites de Manchester, Sheffield, Geneve et Lausanne. Ce symposium s'est tenu du 11 au 13 mai 2006 sous le titre: La construction de la figure de Moise. Il s'agissait, dans le cadre d'un travail interdisciplinaire, de faire le point sur la construction du personnage de Moise depuis l'epoque perse jusqu'a l'epoque romaine, sans pour autant renoncer a poser le probleme de ses origines. Les differentes contributions dressent le portrait d'un Moise aux multiples facettes. En ce qui concerne plus particulierement le dossier biblique, qui demeure probablement la source la plus importante sur Moise, les textes reunis ici nous invitent non seulement a repenser la formation de l'histoire biblique de Moise, mais aussi a prendre en consideration qu'elle ne constitue qu'une selection d'histoires en circulation durant les periodes perse et hellenistique et dans lesquelles se rencontrent le Levant, la Grece et l'Egypte.

Book excerpt: Social memory studies offer an under-utilised lens through which to approach the texts of the Hebrew Bible. In this volume, the range of associations and symbolic values evoked by twenty-one characters representing ancestors and founders, kings, female characters, and prophets are explored by a group of international scholars. The presumed social settings when most of the books comprising the TANAK had come into existence and were being read together as an emerging authoritative corpus are the late Persian and early Hellenistic periods. It is in this context then that we can profitably explore the symbolic values and networks of meanings that biblical figures encoded for the religious community of Israel in these eras, drawing on our limited knowledge of issues and life in Yehud and Judean diasporic communities in these periods. This is the first period when scholars can plausibly try to understand the mnemonic effects of these texts, which were understood to encode the collective experience members of the community, providing them with a common identity by offering a sense of shared past while defining aspirations for the future. The introduction and the concluding essay focus on theoretical and methodological issues that arise from analysing the Hebrew Bible in the framework of memory studies. The individual character studies, as a group, provide a kaleidoscopic view of the potentialities of using a social memory approach in Biblical Studies, with the essay on Cyrus written by a classicist, in order to provide an enriching perspective on how one biblical figure was construed in Greek social memory, for comparative purposes.

Until now, no study has based itself on the semantics of the Hebrew lexeme nābîʾ ("prophet"). This investigation by William L. Kelly discusses the nature and function of prophecy in the corpus of the Hebrew book of Jeremiah. It analyses all occurrences of nābîʾ in Jeremiah and performs a close reading of three primary texts, Jeremiah 1.4–19, 23.9–40 and 27.1–28.17. The result is a detailed explanation of how prophecy works, and what it meant to call someone a nābîʾ in ancient Israel. Combining the results of the semantic analysis and close readings, the study reaches conclusions for six main areas of study: (1) the function and nature of prophecy; (2) dreams and visions; (3) being sent; (4) prophets, priests and cult; (5) salvation and doom; and (6) legitimacy and authority. These conclusions explain the conceptual categories related to nābîʾ in the corpus. I then situate these findings in two current debates, one on the definition of nābîʾ and one on cultic prophecy. This study contributes to critical scholarship on prophecy in the ancient world, on the book of Jeremiah, and on prophets in ancient Israel. It is the first major study to analyse nābîʾ based on its semantic associations. It adds to a growing consensus which understands prophecy as a form of divination. Contrary to some trends in Jeremiah scholarship, this work demonstrates the importance of a close reading of the Masoretic (Hebrew) text. This study uses a method of a general nature which can be applied to other texts. Thus there are significant implications for further research on prophecy and prophetic literature.
