Book excerpt: A pictorial history of the development of New York City’s Central Park from conception to completion. Drawing on the unparalleled collection of original designs for Central Park in the New York City Municipal Archives, Cynthia S. Brenwall tells the story of the creation of New York’s great public park, from its conception to its completion. This treasure trove of material ranges from the original winning competition entry; to meticulously detailed maps; to plans and elevations of buildings, some built, some unbuilt; to elegant designs for all kinds of fixtures needed in a world of gaslight and horses; to intricate engineering drawings of infrastructure elements. Much of it has never been published before. A virtual time machine that takes the reader on a journey through the park as it was originally envisioned, The Central Park is both a magnificent art book and a message from the past about what brilliant urban planning can do for a great city.

Book Synopsis National Land Parcel Data by : National Research Council
Download or read book National Land Parcel Data written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-11-07 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land parcel data (also known as cadastral data) provide geographically referenced information about the rights, interests, and ownership of land and are an important part of the financial, legal, and real estate systems of society. The data are used by governments to make decisions about land development, business activities, regulatory compliance, emergency response, and law enforcement. In 1980, a National Research Council book called for nationally integrated land parcel data, but despite major progress in the development of land parcel databases in many local jurisdictions, little progress has been made toward a national system. National Land Parcel Data looks at the current status of land parcel data in the United States. The book concludes that nationally integrated land parcel data is necessary, feasible, and affordable. It provides recommendations for establishing a practical framework for sustained intergovernmental coordination and funding required to overcome the remaining challenges and move forward.

Book Synopsis Standardized Guidelines by Building Type by : Siegfried Wyner, B.S., M.S., C.E.

This book was released on 2008-04-22 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The computer revolution over the past 10-15 years in our country has feed to the permanent dependence of all fields of human activity, on computer technology. Based on my experience as a plan examines for all building documentations, I find that is necessary a reform and improvement of the plan examination and approval process, in all boroughs of this big city of N.Y. Because the architects and engineers have the best knowledge of their documentations, I have realized that their help is the most necessary to the real improvement of the verification process. We have to help them in this hypothesis, I considered necessary to create a DATA BASE of guidelines realized for different building types, which will be a computerized flexible tool for all review and approved process, which can be updated all the time in the future, by adding new guidelines to the existing ones, with the new and specific requirements regarding new zoning resolutions, new code articles, new memorandums and criteria’s issued by the city department for the best development of this great city. This was the fundamental idea for the creation a DATA BASE of guidelines, which will help from the beginning of the process of creation of technical documentations, and after, in the long process of verification and approval, for the execution of buildings in the city. Certainly this collection of guidelines proposed in my 2 volumes, does not include all of the possible building types, zoning and code resolutions, but in my opinion and based on my experience is the most important tool in this complex process of approval of new investments. This tool can be used not only by designers of the documentations, but by the expediters, plan examiners, contractors, and finally by the owners of the investments. These two books will be a unified procedure for all the factors which contribute to the realization of investments. I consider to mention and other benefits realized by this written DATA BASE: • A reduced work load in the department of building • A uniform approach for all 5 boroughs in the verification and approval process • A reduction of time for verification and approval • An improvement in the quality of documentations presented for verification and approval • The use of self certification will be increased by the confidence of designers for their documentations • A remarkable reduction of people involved in this complex process • A sensible reduction of the investment costs.
Book Synopsis The Construction of Cognitive Maps by : Juval Portugali
Download or read book The Construction of Cognitive Maps written by Juval Portugali and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-23 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: and processes which are exclusive to humans in their encoding, storing, decoding and retrieving spatial knowledge for various tasks. The authors present and discuss connectionist models of cognitive maps which are based on local representation, versus models which are based on distributed representation, as well as connectionist models concerning language and spatial relations. As is well known, Gibson's (1979) ecological approach suggests a view on cognition which is diametrically different from the classical main stream view: perception (and thus cognition) is direct, immediate and needs no internal information processing, and is thus essentially an external process of interaction between an organism and its external environment. The chapter by Harry Heft introduces J. J. Gibson's ecological approach and its implication to the construction of cognitive maps in general and to the issue of wayfinding in particular. According to Heft, main stream cognitive sciences are essentially Cartesian in nature and have not as yet internalized the implications of Darwin's theory of evolution. Gibson, in his ecological approach, has tried to do exactly this. The author introduces the basic terminology of the ecological approach and relates its various notions, in particular optic flow, nested hierarchy and affordances, to navigation and the way routes and places in the environment are learned.
