Book excerpt: The revised age models for the upper Oligocene to middle Miocene interval of the Marion Plateau have been used to identify eleven sequence boundaries and sequences sets at the Marion Plateau; MSA1.2 (23.1 Ma), MSA1.4 (22.1 Ma), MSA2.1 (21.2 Ma), MSB1.1 (18.4 Ma), MSB1.2 (17.3 Ma), MSB2.1 (16.5 Ma), MSB2.2 (15.6 Ma), MSB2.3 (14.8 Ma), MSB3.1 (13.6 Ma), MSB3.2 (12.9 Ma), and MSB3.3 (11.8 Ma). The complementary Miocene oxygen isotope events Mi1, Mi1a, Mi1aa, Mi2, Mi2b, Mi3a, Mi3, Mi4, Mi5a, Mi5, and Mi6 are recognized in the Marion Plateau sequences. In addition correlation to sequences on the New Jersey margin, the Gulf of Papua, Great Australian Bight, and McMurdo Sound Antarctica indicate that these sequences are controlled by glacio-eustasy, primarily the increase of ice volume on Antarctica. Changes in the preservation, assemblage structure and diversity of calcareous nannofossils as well as %planktic foraminifera, %neritics coincide with transgressive phases and sequence boundaries. The principles of 'highstand shedding' are illustrated at the Marion Plateau by enhanced preservation of calcareous nannofossil, deposition of glauconite, unconformities and condensed intervals associated with early to middle Miocene sequence boundaries. Variations in surface water nutrient and temperature conditions at the Marion Plateau throughout the Miocene coincide with climatic events of the early Miocene (23 - 17 Ma), the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum (17.6 - 15.4 Ma), and Middle Miocene Climatic Transition (14.8 - 13.8 Ma), and the stepwise growth of ice sheets on Antarctica. Calcareous nannofossil communities show evidence for precessional and eccentricity orbital forcing during the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum, as well as a significantly cooler surface water mass at the Marion Plateau coinciding with the onset of the Middle Miocene Climatic Transition and Mi3a (14.8 Ma) glacial event. Changes in surface water fertility and temperature during the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum agree with other studies that posit growth of significant ice volume on Antarctica starting as early as ~17.35 Ma. Further evidence for significant cooling at the Mi3a (14.8 Ma) glacial event agrees with studies suggesting a step-wise cooling for the formation of a semi- permanent Antarctic ice sheet and thermohaline circulation, starting first at 14.8 Ma (Mi3a) and intensifying at 13.9 Ma (Mi3).

Book excerpt: This study provides a geomorphological interpretation of Miocene carbonate sedimentation along the Scott Reef Trend in the Browse Basin of NW Australia using a high resolution 3D marine seismic survey acquired in late 2005 across the Torosa gas field. Miocene carbonate sedimentation in the Browse Basin occurs along a NE‐SW trending structural high resulting from multiple phases of extensional and inversion tectonics. The Torosa 3D data set was provided by Dr. Henry Posamentier with the permission of Woodside Energy and Chevron Energy Technologies Company. It consists of ~740 km2 of full‐fold data from 900‐2100ms two-way travel time (twt) (~750‐2500m sub‐sea vertical depth). The purpose of the survey was to help better understand the petroleum system which lies within deeper Jurassic sediments (below 2100ms twt). A 2D seismic line from Spectrumasa (0‐7000ms twt) provides regional control and allows for the interpretation and better understanding of sequence stratigraphic markers. Well logs obtained from the public domain Western Australia Petroleum Information System (WAPIMS) website allow for the generation of synthetic seismograms and help constrain lithological interpretations. In this unique area of the world, cyclical shallow water tropical carbonate sedimentation existed for ~20 million years and now is covered by ~550m of Pliocene‐recent carbonate muds and ~400m of water. Eight distinct geomorphological stages in the evolution of this ~1500 m thick Oligocene to Miocene carbonate shelf depositional setting are recognized. These stages of carbonate sedimentation are mostly controlled and punctuated by cyclical regional sea level fluctuations. Relative sea level fall results in the karstification of the shallow water carbonate platform, and a relative sea‐level rise drapes the karstified terrain with carbonate mud. Carbonate sedimentation then reestablishes during the period of relatively high sea‐level and the cycle repeats itself. Sea‐level fluctuations aren’t the only controls on this carbonate deposition; basin subsidence and changing paleo‐oceanic currents also play important roles. Earlier workers for example suggest that the Indonesian Throughflow which brings warm, low salinity water across the North West Shelf of Australia may be the key to initiation and final demise of topical carbonate sedimentation along the Scott Reef Trend. These and other geomorphological observations are imaged beautifully in this volume of data.

Book excerpt: The detailed morphologies, evolution and termination of Neogene tropical carbonate platforms in the Northern Carnarvon Basin (NCB) on the passive margin of the Northwest Shelf of Australia reveal information on the history of local oceanographic processes and changing climate. Cool-water carbonate deposition, dominant during the early-middle Miocene, was superseded by a siliciclastic influx, which prograded across the shelf beginning in the late-middle Miocene during a period of long-term global sea-level fall. The resulting prograding clinoform sets, interpreted as delta lobes, created relict topographic highs following Pliocene termination of the siliciclastic influx (Sanchez et al., 2012a; 2012b). These highs created a favorable shallow-water environment for subsequent photozoan carbonate production. A composite, commercial 3D seismic volume allows investigation of the temporal and spatial evolution of the resulting Pliocene-Pleistocene carbonate platforms. Initiation of carbonate development, in addition to being a response to cessation of siliciclastic influx and the existence of suitable shallow-water substrate, was also influenced by the development of the warm-water Leeuwin Current (LC), flowing southwestward along the margin. Four flat-topped platforms are mapped; each platform top is a sequence boundary defined by onlap above and truncation below the boundary. Successive platforms migrated southwestward, along-strike. Internally, platforms have progradational seismic geometries. The mapped platform tops are large (≥ 10 km wide). Evidence of karst (e.g., v-shaped troughs up to 50m deep and ~1 km wide and broader karst basins up to 20 km2 coverage area) on platform tops suggests episodic subaerial exposure that contributed to the demise of individual platforms. The most recent platform, platform 4, is unique in having interpreted reefs superimposed on the progradational platform base. The base of these reefs now lies at ~153 m and the reefs may therefore have developed post-LGM (~21 Ka). The reefs subsequently drowned, with drowning possibly aided by turbidity associated with formation of adjacent sediment drifts and weakening and strengthening LC during the late Pleistocene. The progressive drowning and termination of platforms from northeast to southwest along strike may result from differential compaction of the deltaic substrate or differential tectonic subsidence caused by the collision at the Banda Arc between the Australian and Pacific plates.

Book excerpt: The stratigraphic evolution of the Cenozoic strata was investigated through the interpretation of 2D and 3D seismic surveys, integrated with wireline and biostratigraphic data. Results show that the Cenozoic stratigraphy of the Dampier and Barrow Sub-basins in the North Carnarvon Basin, NW Shelf of Australia, is characterized by two second-order sequences, separated by a late-Miocene to Pliocene sequence boundary. The Dampier and Barrow Sub-basins contain: 1) Base Paleocene to Oligocene siliciclastic-carbonates, 2) Oligocene to early-middle Miocene non-tropical carbonate ramps, 3) early-middle Miocene to late Miocene-Pliocene tropical rimmed platforms, 4) a middle Miocene to Pliocene siliciclastic deposit, 5) late Miocene-Pliocene to Pleistocene non-tropical carbonate ramps and 6) Pleistocene to Recent tropical rimmed platforms. The initiation of tropical reef production in the North Carnarvon Basin was likely triggered by local climate, linked to the strengthening of the Leeuwin Current and the northwards migration of the NW Shelf to tropical latitudes. The temporary demise of carbonate reef production was likely a combination of 1) the closure of the Indonesian Throughflow to the North Carnarvon Basin, amplifying regional cooling trends and 2) rapid rise in relative sea-level in response to increasing subsidence rates from Australian and Indonesian Miocene to Recent collisional tectonics. The temporary onset of siliciclastic sedimentation in the Dampier Sub-basin was possibly due to 1) a fall in relative sea-level 2) tectonic uplift and 3) the onset of middle Miocene aridity, decreasing vegetation coverage and increasing the erosion rates of the Pilbara hinterland. This study presents new insight on the evolution of carbonate margins and slopes during the Cenozoic in the context of Australia's tectonic and climatic changes. It also provides a detailed characterization of the Cenozoic overburden in the Dampier and Barrow Sub-basins, which is essential to access for exploration geophysics and future drilling operations. Lastly, this work provides an additional analogue for mixed carbonate-siliciclastic reservoirs in SE Asia.

Book excerpt: The Karaisali complex exposes Miocene carbonate platforms that developed on a tectonically controlled, rugged antecedent topography during an ice-house system. The factors affecting platform initiation, architecture, facies distribution, and eventually drowning of those Miocene platforms remain poorly understood because of the stratigraphic and structural complexities of the Adana Basin. In this work, sedimentological and structural analysis supplemented by dating using strontium isotope lead to a better understanding of platform developing in a strongly subsiding basin.Using twenty one measured sections, ultra-high resolution photopans, petrographic, and strontium isotope analysis; an interpreted depositional model and detailed cross section were built. The architecture of the platforms can be divided into two transgressive and two highstand systems tracts separated by a maximum flooding surface. This work shows that the small attached carbonate platforms of the Karaisali Formation colonized a steep-rugged basement topography in a rapidly subsiding basin without any significant syn-sedimentary movement.The combination of rapid subsidence with a subsidence rate of more than 400 m/MA and eustacy drove the carbonate platform to successively nucleate, aggrade with minor progradation, and eventually drown on basement highs. The relative sea level rise resulted in back-stepping of the carbonate platforms towards landwards and development of Early Burdigalian to Late Serravalian reefal carbonates on the paleo-highs of the antecedent topography further in northernwest.

A chapter on the impact of global tectonics and biological evolution on the carbonate system has been added to emphasize the effects of global earth processes and the changing nature of life on earth through Phanerozoic time on all aspects of the carbonate system. The centerpiece of this chapter—and easily the most important synthesis of carbonate concepts developed since the 2001 edition—is the discussion of the CATT hypothesis, an integrated global database bringing together stratigraphy, tectonics, global climate, oceanic geochemistry, carbonate platform characteristics, and biologic evolution in a common time framework. Another new chapter concerns naturally fractured carbonates, a subject of increasing importance, given recent technological developments in 3D seismic, reservoir modeling, and reservoir production techniques.
