Book excerpt: The proposed analytical model developed for concrete confined by FRP composite jackets, might become useful document for various designers and researchers working in the field of retrofitting. Results given by this model easily accepts with the one obtained from the experimental results. The model suggests that, lateral confinement of concrete with FRP composite jackets increases the strength and ductility, under uniaxial compressive load.

Abstract: This thesis presents a lateral strain model of confined concrete, which makes no assumptions on the properties of confining materials and is therefore generally applicable regardless of the type of confinement. It can be applied to concrete members or columns confined by fiber reinforced polymer (FRP), steel tubes or steel tubes wrapped with FRP or steel rings/spirals, provided the appropriate stress-strain models of the confining materials are incorporated in the analysis. The lateral strain model can also be used to directly evaluate the lateral strain of confined concrete with non-cylindrical section or under eccentric loading where the lateral strain and confining stress could vary across the section using finite element analysis. The first part of the thesis presents the details of the derivations of the lateral strain model of confined concrete. A total of 95 actively confined concrete specimens and 34 passively confined concrete specimens covering a wide range of concrete strength from 25 to 120 MPa and confining stress from 0 to 0.99 times the concrete strength tested by other researchers in the published literature have been investigated for the influence of concrete strength, confining stress and axial strain on the lateral strain of confined concrete. Based on the regression analysis, the influence of concrete strength, confining stress and axial strain is accurately and consistently captured and a constitutive model for predicting the lateral strain of confined concrete under different levels of confinement from pre-crack and elastic state to post-crack and inelastic state is proposed. In the second part of the thesis, theoretical models integrating the proposed lateral strain model, axial stress-strain model of confined concrete, stress-strain model of steel tube, FRP, steel rings/spirals have been proposed to analyze the axial stress-strain curves of a total of 174 FRP confined concrete, 138 concrete-filled steel tubes (CFST) without external confinement, 89 CFST with FRP jackets and 98 CFST with external steel rings/spirals. The lateral strain, confining stress can be obtained by an iterative procedure and the axial stress/load can be evaluated by substituting the so obtained confining stress into the axial stress-strain model of confined concrete. It is observed that the theoretical models can predict the axial and lateral stress-strain behaviour of FRP confined concrete, CFST, and CFST with external confinement accurately and consistently. Finally, a parametric study has been carried out by varying a series of structural parameters such as concrete strength, steel tube yield strength and thickness-to-diameter ratios, FRP confining stiffness and rupture strain, and steel rings/spirals confining stiffness to study the effects on strength and ductility. From the data generated by the parametric study, design formulas for predicting the yield and ultimate strength of FRP confined concrete, CFST with or without external confinements are proposed and compared with existing codes and design charts for evaluating the minimum FRP confining stiffness or steel rings/spirals thickness-to-diameter ratio to achieve different levels of ductility for CFST with various concrete strength are presented. Moreover, the minimum confining stiffness of external confinement to avoid delamination is evaluated for design guidance. Subjects: Reinforced concrete

Book excerpt: This thesis is intended at studying and comparing empirical models that have been proposed for the modeling of the stress-strain response of a FRP confined concrete subjected to axial load. An attempt has been made to model the experimental set up for the compression test of a concrete cylinder confined with FRP sheet in AbaqusCAE. The results so obtained have been compared and analyzed against the experimental test results & the results obtained from a chosen mathematical model (Modified Lam & Teng). An attempt was made to create a new material model in Opensees that follows the chosen mathematical model. However, this was not achieved due to the reasons that will be explained in the later sections.Reinforced concrete confined with steel is typically designed by considering the Manders model (Mander et al., 1988), which assumes a constant confining pressure. This is true with the case of steel as it is a ductile material and one assumes the steel to be yielded. However with the case of FRP jackets, this is not true. FRP is a linear elastic and brittle material and does not yield, which makes the Manders model inaccurate for its analysis. Many models have been proposed which take into account the increasing confining pressure due to the FRP wrap. A comparative study of the constitutive models proposed for FRP confined reinforced concrete has been done in this study. Finally after a series of numerical interpretations of different specimens and their comparison with the experimental data, the utility and accuracy of the new modified Lam & Teng's model was validated. The validation process included comparison and analytical data obtained via finite element simulation in Abaqus, empirical model results and the experimental data. The objective is achieved and restricted within the following scope of study:1)Literature review to identify and choose the most relevant models for modeling of concrete confined with fiber reinforced polymers in compression.2)Modelling and finite element analysis of the confined concrete compression test in AbaqusCAE.3)Developing the stress-strain curve from several proposed empirical model (Modified Lam & Teng).4)Survey of experimental data on confined concrete with FRP in order to generate an experimental database.5)Comparison of the analytical results in order to define the strengths and limitations of the empirical model chosen to study.6)Validation of the model chosen and a study on its relevance for use in typical bridge columns retrofitted with FRP jackets.7)Proposing changes to the empirical model for more accurate results.8)Validate the effects of the proposed changes.

Book excerpt: The book analyzes a quasi-static fracture process in concrete and reinforced concrete by means of constitutive models formulated within continuum mechanics. A continuous and discontinuous modelling approach was used. Using a continuous approach, numerical analyses were performed using a finite element method and four different enhanced continuum models: isotropic elasto-plastic, isotropic damage and anisotropic smeared crack one. The models were equipped with a characteristic length of micro-structure by means of a non-local and a second-gradient theory. So they could properly describe the formation of localized zones with a certain thickness and spacing and a related deterministic size effect. Using a discontinuous FE approach, numerical results of cracks using a cohesive crack model and XFEM were presented which were also properly regularized. Finite element analyses were performed with concrete elements under monotonic uniaxial compression, uniaxial tension, bending and shear-extension. Concrete beams under cyclic loading were also simulated using a coupled elasto-plastic-damage approach. Numerical simulations were performed at macro- and meso-level of concrete. A stochastic and deterministic size effect was carefully investigated. In the case of reinforced concrete specimens, FE calculations were carried out with bars, slender and short beams, columns, corbels and tanks. Tensile and shear failure mechanisms were studied. Numerical results were compared with results from corresponding own and known in the scientific literature laboratory and full-scale tests.

A notable advancement in this realm is using fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) to confine concrete, enhancing its strength, ductility, and durability. FRP jacketing and confinement offer a corrosion-resistant, effective, and sustainable solution to the structural rehabilitation of concrete structures. However, the mechanics of FRP confinement are not well understood. The Mechanism of Fibre-reinforced Polymer Confinement in Concrete Structures fills the key knowledge gaps in the field, offering an all-encompassing resource: from the material level to the structural level, including FRP confinement mechanism, governing factors, constitutive behavior, and columns’ plastic hinge problems.
