Book Synopsis Missionaires Oblates by : Rosa Bruno-Jofré
Download or read book Missionaires Oblates written by Rosa Bruno-Jofré and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2008-11-17 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis The Church of Women by : Dorothy L. Hodgson
Download or read book The Church of Women written by Dorothy L. Hodgson and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2005-05-11 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Africa, why have so many more women converted to Christianity than men? What explains the appeal of Christianity to women? What does religious conversion mean for the negotiation of gender and ethnic identity? What role does religious conversion play as a tool for empowering women? In The Church of Women, Dorothy L. Hodgson looks at how gender has shaped the encounter between missionary priests and Maasai men and women in Tanzania. Building on her extensive experience with Maasai and the Spiritan missionaries, Hodgson explores how gendered change among Maasai has shaped women's notions of religious faith, religious practice, and spiritual power. Hodgson explores the appeal of Catholicism among women in East Africa, the enmeshing of Catholic practice with Maasai spirituality, and the meaning of conversion to new Christians. This rich, engaging, and original book challenges notions about religious encounter and the role of ethnic identity, female authority, and power among Maasai.

Book excerpt: In the 1880s a Swiss-born biologist, Johann Büttikofer, while working for the Royal Museum of Natural History in Leiden, The Netherlands, carried out two extended expeditions to Liberia, West Africa. In 1890 he published the results of his work in German in two-volumes, entitled Reisebilder aus Liberia (Travel Sketches from Liberia). Büttikofer worked extensively in the forested regions of coastal Liberia and made the acquaintance of many prominent Liberians and other personalities of that era. His zoological work there is actually exceeded by his detailed descriptions of the state of Liberia some 50 years following its colonization by freed American slaves and their descendents. It constitutes the first comprehensive monograph on the Republic of Liberia.

Book Synopsis Emancipation in African Theology by : Fon Victor Wan-Tatah
Download or read book Emancipation in African Theology written by Fon Victor Wan-Tatah and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1989 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book considers methodological, theological and philosophical implications of an African liberation theology. The affirmation of the need for African theology which resembles that of Latin America by the conference of Third World Theologians some ten years ago in Ghana, failed to identify certain cultural and historical differences that make Africa unique. Dr. Wan-Tatah insists that African theologians must be critical of concepts and assumptions that undermine an authentic African theology of emancipation. Emancipation here merely begins with Western lambasting, followed by a thorough-going evaluation of African ecclesiastical and political systems.
