Book excerpt: This title has been conceptualized to fill the gap between established titles like Laxmikant_Indian Polity to the NCERT text books. Students prefer to read a textbook where conceptual theories are explained along with gives them the full coverage of competitive examinations. So, there have always been a need for a book on constitution that could cater to the requirements of various competitive exams, i.e., to answer multiple-choice questions as well as descriptive questions. The same was the need for the candidates preparing for the Civil Services Examination. This book seeks to fulfil that need. This book presents all the concepts in a lucid and simple manner, where concepts are supported with pictographic representation, flowcharts and tabular format to enhance the understanding of the student. Also, the book contains important questions that appeared in the Civil Services Main Examination. Especially, the history of making of the Constitution and the Local Governments have been given in comparative table mode. This book would be of good help to the students preparing not only for the Civil Service Examination, but all competitive exams and the students of LLB (Law), alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This omnibus brings together two highly acclaimed volumes of essays written by India's leading constitutional expert and political commentator, A.G. Noorani. The volume also includes nine new essays that examine key issue areas that emerged in the debate on institutions and citizens' rights later. The essays explore the Indian Constitution and its basic structure, Parliament and the making of foreign policy, the issue of lobbying and the need for appropriate legislation, as also ethical codes for parliamentarians and ministers. Further, the omnibus includes a discussion of Courts and their powers of contempt, journalist's rights and freedom of information, in addition to an analysis of the choice of candidates by political parties. Written in the author's trademark lucid style, Constitutional Questions in India scrutinizes almost every constitutional problem that arose in the last two decades. The essays in this volume deal with issues concerning the President, Parliament, the states, the Judiciary, the Civil Services, the Election Commission, the armed forces and the process of accountability on which the constitutional machinery is based. Citizens' Rights, Judges and State Accountability follows the discussion of the executive and legislative branches with a discussion of India's institutions, the Judiciary, Civil Services and the elections, and various commissions of enquiry constituted by the government. It is supplemented with insights into the freedom of information and the citizen's rights to know, and specific articles on the Constitution, parliamentary resolutions, foreign policy, and the armed forces. While highlighting the process of accountability across these institutions, the volume demonstrates how citizens can assert their rights in the face of institutional disinterest and injustice.

Book excerpt: I have great pleasure in placing this book before the aspirants of the top administrateservices. The book has been written to meet the growing requirement of the candidatesappearing for the Civil Services Examination (Preliminary and Main) conducted by TheUnion Public Services Commission. In 2011 and 2013 the UPSC changed the pattern and Syllabus of the preliminaryand main examinations, respectively. In both the changes, the scope of Indian Polityhas been considerable increased. Hence this new edition of the book is more relevantnow and is aimed to meet the expanded needs of the aspirants. This comprehensive volume would enable the readers to acquire a complete anddetailed understanding of the subject. It covers all dimensions (constitutional, nonconstitutionpolitical and administrative) of the subject. My first hand experience ofcoaching the candidates for the Civil Services Examinations has been a great sourceof inspiration and has helped me immensely in writing this book.An efforts has been made to make the contents of the book relevant, authenticand upto date. The constitutional provision are explained in the light of the debatesof the constituent Assembly of India as well as the judgement of the supreme Courtand the high courts. I have also used tables to make the presentation more clear. TheAppendices, Provide at the end of the book. Serve as a reference section.I welcome all constructive comments and concrete suggestion from the readers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Before 1947, India was a dependency of the United Kingdom and consisted of British India, and the Princely States. It encompassed the entire area which now forms the four countries of India, Pakistan, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. India inherited a dismal economy from the British rulers at the time of Independence in 1947. Owing to poor technological and scientific capabilities, industrialization was limited and lop-sided. Agricultural sector exhibited features of feudal and semi-feudal institutions, resulting into low productivity. The political system was fragmented and the national unity was in danger. Various factors were responsible for political problems which were threatening the very existence of India as a nation. The Constitution of India adopted on November 26, 1949, became operative on January 26, 1950. It provides for two layers of Government, one at the Central level, and the other at the level of the States. A federal polity of this kind requires division of powers and responsibilities between the Centre and the States. Hence, the Constitution describes in detail the legislative powers and functions of the two tiers of Government. It is the fountain-head of all legislations. India, with a population of more than one billion, is the world?s largest democracy. Indian polity consists of three main branches, namely the executive, legislature and the judiciary along with subsidiary branches like political parties, statutory institutions etc. This book presents a comprehensive description and analysis of the constitution, system of government and dynamics of politics in India, a geographically and demographically vast country inhabited by people professing different religions, speaking a variety of languages and adhering to diverse socio-cultural ethos.

This book examines fundamental issues about the basic law of the land, the author contending that it is necessary to go beyond viewing democracy merely as the vesting of fundamental authority in institutions of elected representatives.
