Book excerpt: Modern freemasonry was invented in London about 1717, but was only one of a surge of British associations in the early modern era which had originated before the English Revolution. By 1800, thousands of clubs and societies had swept the country. Recruiting widely from the urban affluent classes, mainly amongst men, they traditionally involved heavy drinking, feasting, singing, and gambling. They ranged from political, religious and scientific societies, artistic and literary clubs, to sporting societies, bee keeping, and birdfancying clubs, and a myriad of other associations.
Book Synopsis The English diaspora in North America by : Tanja Bueltmann
Download or read book The English diaspora in North America written by Tanja Bueltmann and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnic associations were once vibrant features of societies, such as the United States and Canada, which attracted large numbers of immigrants. While the transplanted cultural lives of the Irish, Scots and continental Europeans have received much attention, the English are far less widely explored. It is assumed the English were not an ethnic community, that they lacked the alienating experiences associated with immigration and thus possessed few elements of diasporas. This deeply researched new book questions this assumption. It shows that English associations once were widespread, taking hold in colonial America, spreading to Canada and then encompassing all of the empire. Celebrating saints days, expressing pride in the monarch and national heroes, providing charity to the national poor, and forging mutual aid societies mutual, were all features of English life overseas. In fact, the English simply resembled other immigrant groups too much to be dismissed as the unproblematic, invisible immigrants.

Book Synopsis Moral Visions and Material Ambitions by : A. Kristen Foster
Download or read book Moral Visions and Material Ambitions written by A. Kristen Foster and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No Single vision for the future of America existed after the Revolution. In light of social and economic changes, America's scope shifted from community-mindedness-the very heart of the republican ideal-to economic individualism. In Moral Visions and Material Ambittions, A. Kristen Foster describes how eager young entrepreneurs in Philadelphia manipulated America's moral vision of a classical republic to facilitate their own material ambitions, fostered by the free market economy that arose between 1776 and 1836. As market developments changed economic relationships in the city, men and women used the Revolutions's republican language to help explain what was happening to them, and in the process they helped redefine class structure in Philadelphia. This study explores the ways Philadelphians used the Revolution and its powerful language of liberty and equality to impose meaning on their lives, as an expanding market irreversibly changed social and econimic relationships in their city and, eventually, throughout the rest of the country. Book Synopsis Atlantic Canadian Imprints by : Patricia Lockhart Fleming
Download or read book Atlantic Canadian Imprints written by Patricia Lockhart Fleming and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1991-12-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive analytical bibliography of Atlantic Canadian imprints, this volume covers some 320 books, pamphlets, broadsides, government publications, and serials. Most have not been listed before in any bibliography or catalogue. They represent the holdings of more than thirty libraries and archives in the four Atlantic provinces, and in Ontario, Quebec, the United States, and England. Each entry follows the principles of descriptive bibliography and includes full collation, contents, record of paper, type, and binding, analysis of issue and state, and location of every copy examined. Historical notes deal with authorship, printing, publishing, distribution and sales, and with the content of important works and the relationship between items. Arrangement is by province, then by year of publication. The material catalogued encompasses a wide range of subjects. God and government are two of the most common, but there are many others: education, municipal organization, history, elections, transportation, agriculture, legal trials, and a number of societies—benevolent, national, religious, and masonic. There are also many almanacs, including one in German, several satires and addresses in verse, and a French abécédaire. Not surprisingly in a nineteenth-century Maritime bibliography, signal books and decisions about piracy abound. Six indexes provide access by author, title, genre, trades, place of publication, and language. Patricia Fleming’s work continues Marie Tremaine’s A Bibliography of Canadian Imprints, 1751–1800 and supplements that work with new and previously unlocated imprints. It adds an essential element to our understanding of print communication in Atlantic Canada.
