En 1893 el Cardenal Benito San y Forés se plantea en un concilio provincial adaptar a la archidiócesis la doctrina del Concilio Vaticano I. A comienzos del siglo XX, tras la publicación del Código de Derecho Canónico en 1917, un nuevo concilio en 1924, presidido esta vez por el cardenal Eustaquio Ilundain y Esteban, tiene como objetivo adecuar la vida y costumbres de la iglesia hispalense sobre la base del nuevo marco legislativo-organizativo eclesiásitco. el cardenal Pedro Segura y Sáenz utilizara el sínodo diocesano en 1943 y el concilio provincial en 1944 como medios de fundamentación del nacionalcatolicismo instaurado en España tras la Guerra Civil. Finalmente, el cardenal José María bueno Monreal, padre conciliar en el Concilio Vaticano II, apuesta de manera firme por la doctrina emanada de dicho concilio ecuménico, mediante la celebración de un sínodo en Sevilla en 1973, el primero en España tras el Vaticano II. Este segundo tomo del 'Synodicon Baeticum' ofrece estudios introductorios generales, completados con un índice temático de gran utilidad, de las Constituciones de los Concilios y Sínodos de la archidiócesis de Sevilla en los siglos XIX y XX, cuyos textos se contienen en un CD adjunto.

Focusing on a largely neglected period, 1640 to 1750, and moving beyond portrayals that often view the relationships between indigenous peoples and Europeans solely in terms of repression, opposition, or accommodation, Kenneth Mills provides a wealth of new material and interpretation for understanding native Andeans and Spanish Christians as participants in a common, if not harmonious, history. By examining colonial interaction and "religion as lived," he introduces memorable native Andean and Spanish actors and finds vivid points of entry into the complex realities of parish life in the mid-colonial Andes. Mills describes fitful, sometimes unintentional, and often ambiguous kinds of religious change among Andeans. He shows that many of the Quechua speakers whose testimonies form the bulk of the archival evidence were simultaneously active Catholic parishioners and adherents to a complex of transforming Andean religious structures. Mills also explores the notions of reformation and correction that fueled the extirpating process in the central Andes, as elsewhere. Moreover, he demonstrates wide differences of opinion among Spanish churchmen as to the best manner to proceed against the suspect religiosity of baptized Andeans--many of whom considered themselves Christians. In the period between 1150 and 1550, an increasing number of Christians in western Europe made pilgrimage to places where material objects--among them paintings, statues, relics, pieces of wood, earth, stones, and Eucharistic wafers--allegedly erupted into life through such activities as bleeding, weeping, and walking about. Challenging Christians both to seek ever more frequent encounters with miraculous matter and to turn to an inward piety that rejected material objects of devotion, such phenomena were by the fifteenth century at the heart of religious practice and polemic. In Christian Materiality, Caroline Walker Bynum describes the miracles themselves, discusses the problems they presented for both church authorities and the ordinary faithful, and probes the basic scientific and religious assumptions about matter that lay behind them. She also analyzes the proliferation of religious art in the later Middle Ages and argues that it called attention to its materiality in sophisticated ways that explain both the animation of images and the hostility to them on the part of iconoclasts. Seeing the Christian culture of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries as a paradoxical affirmation of the glory and the threat of the natural world, Bynum's study suggests a new understanding of the background to the sixteenth-century reformations, both Protestant and Catholic. Moving beyond the cultural study of "the body"--a field she helped to establish--Bynum argues that Western attitudes toward body and person must be placed in the context of changing conceptions of matter itself.
