Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword by Marcello Pera Written by Joseph Ratzinger shortly before he became Pope Benedict XVI, Christianity and the Crisis of Cultures looks at the growing conflict of cultures evident in the Western world. The West faces a deadly contradiction of its own making, he contends. Terrorism is on the rise. Technological advances of the West, employed by people who have cut themselves off from the moral wisdom of the past, threaten to abolish man (as C.S. Lewis put it)whether through genetic manipulation or physical annihilation. In short, the West is at war-with itself. Its scientific outlook has brought material progress. The Enlightenment's appeal to reason has achieved a measure of freedom. But contrary to what many people suppose, both of these accomplishments depend on Judeo-Christian foundations, including the moral worldview that created Western culture. More than anything else, argues Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI, the important contributions of the West are threatened today by an exaggerated scientific outlook and by moral relativism-what Benedict XVI calls "the dictatorship of relativism"-in the name of freedom. Christianity and the Crisis of Cultures is no mere tirade against the moral decline of the West. Razinger challenges the West to return to its roots by finding a place for God in modern culture. He argues that both Christian culture and the Enlightenment formed the West, and that both hold the keys to human life and freedom as well as to domination and destruction. Ratzinger challenges non-believer and believer alike. "Both parties," he writes, "must reflect on their own selves and be ready to accept correction." He challenges secularized, unbelieving people to open themselves to God as the ground of true rationality and freedom. He calls on believers to "make God credible in this world by means of the enlightened faith they live." Topics include: Reflections on the Cultures in Conflict Today The Significance and Limits of Today's Rationalistic Culture The Permanent Significance of the Christian Faith Why We Must Not Give Up the Fight The Law of the Jungle, the Rule of Law We Must Use Our Eyes! Faith and Everyday Life Can Agnosticism Be a Solution? The Natural Knowledge of God "Supernatural" Faith and Its Origins

Book excerpt: The Spirit of service is in trouble in America. The idea of service is not what it once was. Several decades of 'me-first' attitude have played havoc with the concept of service. This is unfortunate because God put us on this Earth to serve one another and to share His love. Educators are in the ideal profession to carry out God's will. It is the author's hope that this book will help educators mentally, emotionally and spiritually survive the difficult times, as well as celebrate and focus on the joys of the teaching profession. This book is divided into the months of the school year (August through June). The challenges and joys of each month of the school year are explored and celebrated. Because of the busy schedule most keep as educators, the format of this book is set up for approximately two readings per week.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WORDS for Thinking AND THOUGHTS for Meditation is a Christian resource for an ordered and effective spiritual devotional experience. Life concerns, as well as social and ethical issues are considered in the light of God’s message through Jesus Christ. Readers will find in this volume three hundred and sixty-six daily devotional readings. Each day’s devotional has a suggested scripture reference as the basis for a brief comment provided for the day. In addition, each reading includes a short prayer. These can be used in a family or small group setting, as well as privately. Since each day’s devotional reading contains a separate and complete message, one can begin using this volume at any time and continue on a daily inspired journey of faith for one’s life. In addressing personal and social issues I have drawn upon more than forty years of pastoral ministry as well as upon a life-long study of Christian theology. In this way I believe my sharing in the real struggles of persons facing life problems and my awareness of the accumulated insights of Christian thinkers come together in this book of devotions, which is designed to give the reader thoughts upon which to meditate along life’s way. —Paul Krebill
