Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This short piece is taken from a sermon delivered during the funeral of a woman named Mrs. Turner. It begins with a passage stating that the prophet Isaiah, once, made many serious accusations against Israel for turning away from God. One of these was that good people were dying without anyone noticing or caring, and kind-hearted people were being taken away without anyone realizing that they were being saved from future harm. The world and the church are in a bad state, with religion declining and becoming less important. This is a sad and serious situation, so we should ask Jesus, like the disciples did, to be with us.

Book excerpt: The Christian’s Only Comfort is the sermonic exposition of the Heidelberg Catechism by Theodore VanderGroe (1705–1784), a prominent divine of the Dutch Further Reformation. VanderGroe’s exposition of the Heidelberg Catechism could be considered his magnum opus, and in some ways, it was esteemed as highly by the godly in the Netherlands as The Christian’s Reasonable Service of Wilhelmus à Brakel. In this able exposition of the Heidelberg Catechism, we find the unmistakable characteristics of the Dutch Further Reformation: it is steeped in Scripture; it is very pastoral; and it promotes a robust, comprehensive form of Reformed piety.

Book excerpt: Life-expectancy worldwide is twice what it was a hundred years ago. And because of modern medicine, many of us don't often see death up close. That makes it easy to live as if death is someone else's problem. It isn't. Ignoring the certainty of death doesn't protect us from feeling its effects throughout the lives we're living now. But this avoidance can hold us back from experiencing the powerful, everyday relevance of Jesus's promises to us. So long as death remains remote and unreal, Jesus's promises will too. But honesty about death brings hope to life. That's the ironic claim at the heart of this book. Cultivating "death-awareness" helps us bring the promises of Jesus from the hazy clouds of some other world into the everyday problems of our world—where they belong.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a catechism: basic biblical instruction in question and answer format. It is a discipleship tool. It is a guidebook. It is inherently practical and simple to use: The are 52 lessons, one for each Lord's Day. I pray God will use this book to help you grow in and to teach biblical truth and Christian living for the glory of God. I pray the Spirit would use it to bless you. Catechism means instruction. It comes from the Greek word katecheo, which means to instruct or teach. The verb is found, for example, in Luke 1:4 and Acts 18:25. My Only Comfort in Life and Death--a phrase which comes from the first lesson--is essentially a republication of Hercules Collins' An Orthodox Catechism (1680), which is a Baptist version of the Heidelberg Catechism (1563). I have made few and slight revisions strictly for practical purposes, such as readability. The essence of the catechism is the three-part structure of MISERY, DELIVERANCE, AND GRATITUDE. The first part deals with the misery of sin, the second part deals with deliverance in Christ, and the third part deals with the gratitude of those delivered as expressed in true, Spirit-wrought Christian living. The difference between GOD'S LAW AND GOD'S GOSPEL is key to understanding the catechism and a proper approach to Christian living. The law exposes sin, but it cannot deliver--or help deliver--us from sin. Only Christ as revealed in the gospel can deliver us from sin. Christ alone is righteous. Righteousness can only be found in him. To be delivered from sin, sinners must come to share in the blessings of Christ by faith, by virtue of his life, death, and resurrection, and by the power of the Holy Spirit at work in the gospel.

Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Book excerpt: Living After Death: Comfort for Those Who Mourn stands ready to support the individual who faces the greatest challenge in his or her life: living after the death of a loved one. Drawing upon three and one-half decades of experiences as a pastor, hospice chaplain, and counselor, David C. McGee presents approachable, engaging, and gentle treatments that define grief, that offer healthy ways to express grief, that unmask some of the misconceptions about grief, and that help to dismantle the barriers that stand in the way of embracing grief’s healing effects. Living After Death organizes ninety-seven units on diverse topics into five sections that cover the various ways grief makes its influence known after a loved one dies. The sections’ titles give a sense of the journey one may take by reflecting on the comfort the book offers: “I cannot believe this has happened,” “How bad can this get,” “Somewhere between what was and what will be,” “Reclamation, repossession, and restoration,” and “Rediscovering yourself.” When—not if—someone you care about dies, Living After Death: Comfort for Those Who Mourn can give you the tested and dependable guidance that emerges from reflecting upon decades’ of encounters with people in the midst of grief. It provides ways for you to practice self-care when you are mourning and suggests how to accept your loss, to embrace the strengths of human nature, and to trust in God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bishop Schoenborn, editor of the monumental Catechism of the Catholic Church, presents profound reflections on the meaning of death, judgment and eternal life, and the Church's teachings on this eschatological dimension of our faith. Lamenting the absence today of sermons and writings on this important subject, Schoenborn meets that need by delving deeply into the Church's rich tradition of thought on life beyond death. Today, language about man's pilgrim path, about his homeland in heaven, of earthly tribulation and hope for life beyond death, has become largely a foreign language in the Christian churches. It is only seldom that a sermon dares to look out on the vista of eternal life. It seems that fear of being accused of dispensing a consolation in a life after death and of fleeing from the world has become to a large extent a self-censorship. Bishop Schoeborn says that this "eschatological amnesia" is one reason why many people no longer turn to the Church when they want information about the last things. In this book, Schoenborn shows that Jesus Christ is the focal point of the Christian vision of life on earth and life after death. Christ is the Alpha and the Omega, the one who discloses to us what "existence in transition" means.
