Non di rovine o ruderi si tratta, come impropriamente vengono definiti i resti monumentali del passato, ma di frammenti in continuum con la vita di oggi di cui abbiamo perduto o non conosciamo gli anelli della catena di trasmissione. A uno sguardo più attento i segni ad essi legati non sono mai scomparsi del tutto ed è proprio il sistema di tali segni che va recuperato. Per riannodare questo filo, nel museo ma soprattutto nel sito archeologico, possono concorrere strategie diverse di restituzione fisica oppure visiva, all’interno di maglie viarie, tessuti o brani di paesaggio, cui le moderne tecnologie oggi disponibili offrono un valido ausilio, con simulazioni attrattive e pienamente reversibili. Un ristretto corpus di ville romane o domus visitabili in area mediterranea offre infine una campionatura esemplare dei livelli di musealizzazione oggi raggiunti.

Public archaeology is seen as the updating of the original vocation of the discipline to address the contemporary, in terms of economics, governance, communication, identity of the archaeological assets and the respective social communities.
