Book excerpt: Born out of the heritage of structures first imagined by and constructed for the British aristocracy, the contemporary conservatory represents the ultimate in traditional elegance married to informal comfort. With or without plants and flowers, they come in every conceivable size and shape-square, oblong, octagonal, or whatever your pleasure. The conservatory adds a treasured space to any home and makes a strong statement of individual style. The conservatories surveyed here play a rich architectural role through the use of classic detailing or sophisticated modern materials. Some are based on graceful Victorian antecedents while others are modernist sculptures of glass and steel. The evocative photographs in the book survey the spectrum of styles and interior design-everything from a Zen-inspired glass perch where the landscape outside becomes the room to a casual lounging area enclosed by a virtual jungle canopy. Specific chapters focus on decorating and accessorizing and demystify difficult decisions (color schemes, floor materials, and controlling natural light). Recent advances in weatherproofing, glass engineering, flooring, lighting, and zoned heating and cooling are covered. Also included is an A-to-Z glossary of recommended plants plus a directory of manufacturers and suppliers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid enormous changes in higher education, audience and music listener preferences, and the relevant career marketplace, music faculty are increasingly aware of the need to reimagine classical music performance training for current and future students. But how can faculty and administrators, under urgent pressure to act, be certain that their changes are effective, strategic, and beneficial for students and institutions? In this provocative yet measured book, Michael Stepniak and Peter Sirotin address these questions with perspectives rooted in extensive experience as musicians, educators, and arts leaders. Building on a multidimensional analysis of core issues and drawing upon interviews with leaders from across the performing arts and higher education music fields, Stepniak and Sirotin scrutinize arguments for and against radical change, illuminating areas of unavoidable challenge as well as areas of possibility and hope. An essential read for education leaders contemplating how classical music can continue to thrive within American higher education.

Book excerpt: In seventeenth century Italy, overcrowding, violent political uprising, and plague led an astonishing number of abandoned and orphaned children to overwhelm the cities. Out of the piety of private citizens and the apathy of local governments, the system of conservatori was created to house, nurture, and train these fanciulli vaganti (roaming children) to become hatters, shoemakers, tailors, goldsmiths, cabinet makers, and musicians - a range of practical trades that might sustain them and enable them to contribute to society. Conservatori were founded across Italy, from Venice and Florence to Parma and Naples, many specializing in a particular trade. Four music conservatori in Naples gained particular renown for their exceptional training of musicians, both performers and composers, all boys. By the eighteenth century, the graduates of the Naples conservatories began to spread across Europe, with some 600 boys formerly in residence beginning to dominate the European musical world. Other conservatories in the country - including the Paris Conservatory - began to imitate the principles of the Naples' conservatory's training, known as the partimento tradition. The daily lessons and exercises associated with this tradition were largely lost-until author Robert Gjerdingen discovered evidence of them in the archives of conservatories across Italy and the rest of Europe. Compellingly narrated and richly illustrated, Child Composers in the Old Conservatory follows the story of these boys as they undergo rigorous training with the conservatory's maestri and eventually become maestri themselves, then moves forward in time to see the influence of partimenti in the training of such composers as Claude Debussy and Colette Boyer. Advocating for the revival of partimenti in modern music education, the book explores the tremendous potential of this tradition to enable natural musical fluency for students of all ages learning the craft today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Orangery to the Conservatory People have been looking for ways to protect fragile and tender plants since ancient China and the Roman Empire. Today's greenhouses originated in the mobile shelters designed in the Renaissance for the new species--orange and lemon trees, rare and precious spices--brought back to Europe during the great Age of Exploration. Glass Palaces Until the early nineteenth century, greenhouses were the exclusive plaything of the aristocracy. It was the Industrial Revolution, coupled with the Victorian vision of improvement for the masses, that led to the building of the magnificent public greenhouses that grace so many cities today. From London to Philadelphia via Adelaide and Buenos Aires, discover the beauties of these awesome structures that pay tribute to their farsighted and inspired designers. The Conservatory: a Way of Life The conservatory today is as much of a lifestyle statement as it ever was. The difference is that today, anyone can own a conservatory, as long as they have a few square meters to glass over. This section is full of design ideas and hints on how to make the most of your space and the best materials to use for construction and decoration, and is illustrated with beautiful photographs of the greenhouses of the famous, past and present. Address Book A goldmine of stunning greenhouses to visit in Europe and North America, plus a list of addresses to help you start planning your own conservatory, however modest or ambitious. Also includes a list of Websites for further help and advice. When visiting the superb public gardens of London, New York or Paris, it is hard to remember that the magnificent palaces andcathedrals of soaring glass that we so admire today began life as simple mobile shelters for precious plants brought back from the tropics. It was the nobility's taste for exotic fruit that led to the creation of ever more elaborate and extravangant greenhouses and conservatories. The nineteenth century saw the expansion of public gardens open to all, and the birth of such ambitious creations as the Crystal Palace and Kew Gardens in London. Today, the public greenhouse plays a vital role in sheltering rare and endangered species as part of breeding programs, while grand creations like the Eden Project in Cornwall or Montreal's Biodome are paving the way to the future. The private greenhouse or conservatory, although on a smaller scale, can be just as enchanting. It is a place to relax, to be with friends, to escape from the stresses of everyday living. Take inspiration from this beautifully illustrated book to create your own masterpiece, big or small, modern or traditional. Whether you have space for a separate greenhouse in your own grounds or simply decide to roof over a terrace of balcony with glass, "Greenhouses and Conservatories" will help you make the best of the space available.

Book excerpt: Instrumental Music Education: Teaching with the Musical and Practical in Harmony, 2nd Edition is intended for college instrumental music education majors studying to be band and orchestra directors at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. This textbook presents a research-based look at the topics vital to running a successful instrumental music program, while balancing musical, theoretical, and practical approaches. A central theme is the compelling parallel between language and music, including "sound-to-symbol" pedagogies. Understanding this connection improves the teaching of melody, rhythm, composition, and improvisation. The companion website contains over 120 pedagogy videos for wind, string, and percussion instruments, performed by professional players and teachers, over 50 rehearsal videos, rhythm flashcards, and two additional chapters, "The Rehearsal Toolkit," and "Job Search and Interview." It also includes over 50 tracks of acoustically pure drones and demonstration exercises for use in rehearsals, sectionals and lessons. New to this edition: • Alternative, non-traditional ensembles: How to offer culturally relevant opportunities for more students, including mariachi, African drumming, and steel pans. • More learning and assessment strategies • The science of learning and practicing: How the brain acquires information • The philosophies of Orff and El Sistema, along with the existing ones on Kodály, Suzuki, and Gordon. • The Double Pyramid of Balance: Francis McBeth’s classic system for using good balance to influence tone and pitch. • Updated information about copyright for the digital age Evan Feldman is Conductor of the Wind Ensemble and Associate Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Ari Contzius is the Wind Ensemble Conductor at Washingtonville High School, Washingtonville, NY Mitchell Lutch is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Central College in Pella, Iowa
