Book Synopsis The Changing Face of Land and Conservation in Post-colonial Africa by : George Barrett
Download or read book The Changing Face of Land and Conservation in Post-colonial Africa written by George Barrett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2013 marked the 100th anniversary of the 1913 Land Act in South Africa which legalised the violent dispossession and alienation of the African majority from the land. It is common cause that the alienation of land for conservation purposes, introduced to Africa under colonial rule, has continued more or less uninterrupted until today. However, while nature conservation practices inevitably raise challenging questions relating to land and land use, there has thus far been little concentrated effort to bring together scholars working on the land question, particularly around issues of land tenure, with those whose work focuses on questions of nature construction and the social impacts of conservation in an African context. Compiled from research presented at a ground-breaking interdisciplinary conference held at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa, in 2012, the chapters in this book made their first appearance in a special issue of the Journal of Contemporary African Studies (JCAS) in July 2013. The book brings critical interdisciplinary analyses of the complex interrelations between contemporary (neoliberal) conservation practices in post-colonial Africa, into conversation with the well-trodden territory of land use and contested land issues on the continent. Anchored by an intellectual curiosity about the extent to which past practices continue into the present and with what consequences, the book provides fresh insights into the complex relationship between land and conservation in contemporary Africa.

Book Synopsis Conserved Spaces, Ancestral Places by : Teresa Connor
Download or read book Conserved Spaces, Ancestral Places written by Teresa Connor and published by University of Kwazulu Natal Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining a rich ethnography with social and political history, this book examines 300 years of social conflict over land in South Africa's frontier-like Sundays River Valley, the scene of multiple displacements and the location of the extended Addo Elephant National Park. Conserved Spaces, Ancestral Places tells how the historical relationships among farm workers, owners, and conservationists have produced a dynamic and uniquely hybrid zone. The book argues that close ties exist between farming and wildlife conservation and shows how local inhabitants challenge the boundaries created by the narrative of wildlife ecology. It asks: Have residents around the new conservation zones in South Africa really benefitted from models of co-management? The subtle and deep reading of the agrarian and environmental history of the Sundays River Valley carries important implications for policy and practice related to conservation of protected areas in South Africa and relates it to international thought. The book will appeal to readers interested in environmental and agrarian history, political ecology, displacement, as well as space, place, and identity. ** "...a carefully researched work that crosses the boundaries between agrarian studies and political ecology and makes unique contributions to the ethnography of the Eastern Cape and southern Africa more broadly. It problematizes notions of displacement, particularly in relation to protected areas." -- Derick Fay, Associate Professor of Anthropology, UC Riverside [Subject: African Studies, Ethnography, Social History, Conservation, Environmental Studies, Development Studies, Agricultural Studies]
Book Synopsis Nature Tourism, Conservation, and Development in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa by : Bruce A. Aylward
Download or read book Nature Tourism, Conservation, and Development in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa written by Bruce A. Aylward and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication considers environmental, social and economic issues concerning the development of nature tourism. Using KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa as a case study, it highlights the benefits and trade-offs in promoting and managing sustainable nature tourism development, and examines how to promote the objectives of economic growth, poverty reduction and conservation. Three key issues are explored: the need to move beyond development of a wildlife industry to the creation of a true nature tourism economy that supports biodiversity; the role of the private sector in achieving equitable development and job creation while generating conservation finance; and alternative pricing and other market mechanisms to encourage the growth and economic viability of nature tourism.

Through an integrated approach, the book focuses on below and above-ground biological resources and the diverse scales of environment that characterize Africa. This collection of works is very helpful for natural and social scientists, policymakers, strategists, researchers, government and non-government organizations, biodiversity and environmental managers, climate change scientists, practitioners, activists, conservationists, academics, ecologists, undergraduate and postgraduate students, and others who want to learn about and understand the best way to use and protect Africa's resources and heritage sustainably.
Book Synopsis Land Reform Revisited by : Femke Brandt
Download or read book Land Reform Revisited written by Femke Brandt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land Reform Revisited engages with contemporary debates on land reform and agrarian transformation in South Africa. The volume offers insights into post-apartheid transformation dynamics through the lens of agency and state making. The chapters written by emerging scholars are based on extensive qualitative research and their analysis highlights the ways in which people negotiate and contest land reform realities and politics. By focusing on the diverse meanings of land and competing interpretations of what constitutes success and failure in land reform Brandt and Mkodzongi insist on looking beyond the productivity discourses guiding research and policy making in the field towards an informed view from below. Contributors are: Kezia Batisai, Femke Brandt, Sarah Bruchhausen, Nerhene Davis, Elene Cloete, Tariro Kamuti, Tarminder Kaur, Grasian Mkodzongi, Camalita Naicker, Fani Ncapayi, Mnqobi Ngubane, and Chizuko Sato.
Book Synopsis Nature Conservation in Southern Africa by :
Download or read book Nature Conservation in Southern Africa written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature conservation in southern Africa has always been characterised by an interplay between Capital, specific understandings of Morality, and forms of Militarism, that are all dependent upon the shared subservience and marginalization of animals and certain groups of people in society. Although the subjectivity of people has been rendered visible in earlier publications on histories of conservation in southern Africa, the subjectivity of animals is hardly ever seriously considered or explicitly dealt with. In this edited volume the subjectivity and sentience of animals is explicitly included. The contributors argue that the shared human and animal marginalisation and agency in nature conservation in southern Africa (and beyond) could and should be further explored under the label of ‘sentient conservation’. Contributors are Malcolm Draper, Vupenyu Dzingirai, Jan-Bart Gewald, Michael Glover, Paul Hebinck, Tariro Kamuti, Lindiwe Mangwanya, Albert Manhamo, Dhoya Snijders, Marja Spierenburg, Sandra Swart, Harry Wels.

Book Synopsis Conservation Criminology by : Meredith L. Gore
Download or read book Conservation Criminology written by Meredith L. Gore and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new text introduces conservation criminology as the interdisciplinary study of environmental exploitation and risks at the intersection of human and natural systems. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the book enhances understanding of the various human and organizational behaviors that pose risks to the environment, humans, and drive conservation crime. As human population growth, global market economies, climate change, deforestation, and illegal exploitation of natural resources continue to increase, academic research from numerous disciplines is needed to address these challenges. Conservation Criminology promotes thinking about how unsustainable natural resources exploitation is a cause and a consequence of social conflict. Case studies profiled in the book demonstrate this cause and effect type situation, as well as innovative approaches for reducing risks to people and the environment. This text encourages readers to consider how humans behave in response to environmental risks and the various mechanisms that constitute effective and ineffective approaches to enforcement of wildlife crimes, including environmental and conservation policy. Case studies from the USA, Latin America, Africa, and Asia highlight corruption in conservation, global trade in electronic waste, illegal fishing, illegal logging, human-wildlife conflict, technology and space, water insecurity, wildlife disease, and wildlife poaching. Taken together, chapters expand the reader’s perspective and employ tools to understand and address environmental crimes and risks, and to provide novel empirical evidence for positive change. With established contributors providing interdisciplinary and global perspectives, this book establishes a foundation for the emerging field of conservation criminology.
