Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current extent and distribution of peat swamp in Peninsular Malaysia was discussed in the paper. Since most of the remaining undisturbed peat swamps in Peninsular Malaysia are under forest cover, the paper briefly discussed a forest structure and tree species composition in primary peat swamp forest in Peninsular Malaysia with emphasis on commercial timber species. Most of these areas are in deep peat with little options for other land uses. Those areas on shallow peat have been extensively reclaimed for agriculture. Currently, more areas on deep peat have also been developed for various land uses and triggered a major concern not only to the scientific community but also to the general public. As a result the extent of deep peat under forest declined rapidly in the last decade.

Book excerpt: Peat swamp forests in Sarawak are valuable in terms of timber and biodiversity, but heavily degraded. In order to assess the current status, potential developments and possible management interventions, an adequate monitoring system is necessary. In this study a new monitoring system is proposed, based on an evaluation of the current system combined with the identification of present PSF values. Adjustments include the monitoring of all woody species in all size classes, the monitoring of standing and fallen dead wood and the monitoring of environmental factors such as hydrology and peat depth. Moreover, the protection and monitoring of primary, undisturbed PSF is of paramount importance in the light of conservation of biodiversity and the design and evaluation of management interventions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an excellent resource for scientists, political decision makers, and students interested in the impact of peatlands on climate change and ecosystem function, containing a plethora of recent research results such as monitoring-sensing-modeling for carbon–water flux/storage, biodiversity and peatland management in tropical regions. It is estimated that more than 23 million hectares (62 %) of the total global tropical peatland area are located in Southeast Asia, in lowland or coastal areas of East Sumatra, Kalimantan, West Papua, Papua New Guinea, Brunei, Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and Southeast Thailand. Tropical peatland has a vital carbon–water storage function and is host to a huge diversity of plant and animal species. Peatland ecosystems are extremely vulnerable to climate change and the impacts of human activities such as logging, drainage and conversion to agricultural land. In Southeast Asia, severe episodic droughts associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, in combination with over-drainage, forest degradation, and land-use changes, have caused widespread peatland fires and microbial peat oxidation. Indonesia's 20 Mha peatland area is estimated to include about 45–55 GtC of carbon stocks. As a result of land use and development, Indonesia is the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases (2–3 Gtons carbon dioxide equivalent per year), 80 % of which is due to deforestation and peatland loss. Thus, tropical peatlands are key ecosystems in terms of the carbon–water cycle and climate change.
Book Synopsis Biodiversity, Conservation and Sustainable Use of Peat Swamp Forests in Malaysia by : A. Latiff
Download or read book Biodiversity, Conservation and Sustainable Use of Peat Swamp Forests in Malaysia written by A. Latiff and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peat swamp forest is one of the important edaphic forest types in Malaysia. About 7.2% of the country's total land area is estimated under such forests, mostly in Sarawak, Pahang and Johor. The biodiversity of peat forests is inadequately documented except that in Sarawak. More than 150 species belonging to 53 families of dominant plants have been reported. Species diversity differs with respect to geographical area and depth of the peat. The shallow peats of Peninsular Malaysian east coast are dominated by Campnosperma auriculata, Parishia insignis, Shorea platycarpa, Licuala spp.
