Stefan Zweig’s answers to these questions have permanent and tragic validity: it was because the masses pay tribute not only to the power of love, but also to that of hatred. Followers could always be found for political slogans that established “enmity and divisions, casting sinister flames of hatred against another religion, race or class.” [...] Those who sacrificed themselves for a future reconciliation of men, wrote Stefan Zweig in 1933, could not escape the fact that a torrent of fanaticism, “rising from the shoals of human instinct,” would burst all dams and inundate all. [...] Castellio, “a fly against an elephant,” rose in opposition to Calvin who had condemned Miguel Servet — better known as Servetus — a true fighter for spiritual freedom, to die at the stake. “To burn a man alive does not defend a doctrine, but kills a man,” said Castellio. It was an ever-recurring curse that ideologies degenerated into tyranny and brute force. Fanaticism, indifferent to the material from which it was ignited, wanted only to let the accumulated forces of hatred flame forth. And Zweig utters these words, six years before the outbreak of the Second World War: “At such apocalyptic turning points, when mass delusions determine universal destinies, the demon of war, bursting the chains of reason, hurls itself greedily and joyfully into the world.” [...] In describing a tragic contest — here that of conscience against force — Zweig is in his element. He illuminates the interesting figure of Servetus who had fought in his own fanatical-hysterical manner already as a youth. It is characteristic that Servetus was dubbed by his enemies “Jew,” “Turk,” and wicked “Spaniard.” [...] Zweig stressed the self-sacrificing way in which [Castellio] defended freedom of thought against Calvin, becoming the symbol of “Conscience against Force.” And he describes most touchingly the sorrow this genuine hero had to suffer. He shows, too, how free spirits may be endangered by the carelessness with which they choose their fellow-wanderers; whereas the one-sided totalitarians, protected by their rigidity, always hold a stone ready to fling at their enemies. Greatly influenced by the ideas of Mohandas Gandhi, these "acts of conscience" included sit-ins, boycotts, labor strikes, and conscientious objection to war. Beginning with World War I and ending with the ascendance of Martin Luther King Jr., Joseph Kip Kosek traces the impact of A. J. Muste, Richard Gregg, and other radical Christian pacifists on American democratic theory and practice. These dissenters found little hope in the secular ideologies of Wilsonian Progressivism, revolutionary Marxism, and Cold War liberalism, all of which embraced organized killing at one time or another. In a direct attack on Eikon Basilike, Milton destroys the prerogative of the royal conscience in Eikonoklastes, and later in Paradise Lost proposes an alternative basis for inner confidence, rooting it not in divine right but in the 'paradise within,' a metonym for conscience. Applying a fine-grain literary analysis to literary England from about 1601 to 1667, this study looks backward as well to the theological foundations of the concept in Luther of the 1520s and forward to its transformation by Locke into the term 'consciousness' in 1689. Ultimately, Held's study shows how the idea of a conscience in early modern England, long central to the private self and linked to the will, memory, and mind-emerges as a nexus between the private self and the realm of public action, a bulwark against absolute sovereignty, and its attenuation as a means of more limited, personal certainty. Whether in Milton's struggle against King Charles or Hamlet's against King Claudius, the conscience born of the Reformation becomes less a state of inner critique and more a form of outward expression fit for the communal life and commitments demanded by the early modern era"--

Book excerpt: Despite mounting references to the "transgenerational transmission of violence," we still lack a compelling understanding of the linkage between the interpersonal violence of early life and the criminal violence of adulthood. In Prologue to Violence, Abby Stein draws on the gripping narratives of 65 incarcerated subjects and extensive material from law enforcement files to remedy this lacuna in both the forensic and psychodynamic literature. In the process, she calls into question prevailing beliefs about criminal character and motivation. For Stein the early trauma to which adult criminals are subjected remains unformulated and, as such, unavailable for reflection. Contrary to common belief, these criminals, especially sex murderers, do not commit their crimes in a rational or fully conscious way. They are not driven by deviant fantasy, their psychopathy is not inborn, and they rarely commit acts of violence "without conscience." Stein’s interdisciplinary analysis of her data infuses contemporary relational psychoanalysis with the insights of neuroscience, traumatology, criminology, and cognitive and narrative psychology. A powerful challenge to offender treatment programs to address the shaping impact of childhood trauma rather than merely to "correct" the cognitions of violent offenders, Prologue to Violence will be equally compelling to researchers and academics investigating child abuse and adult violence.
