Now, within a few days, a rescued girl of questionable virtue was filling his bed and complicating his life; those off-world bastards, the Pipers, were arming the western cannibals and Connie was back to the bad old days of military campaigning, long nights on cold ground, long hours in the saddle, all mixed with episodes of hard fighting, heavy killing, and no quarter requested or given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conrad's Western World traces the sources of Heart of Darkness, Nostromo, The Secret Agent and some of the short stories related to these novels. As in his highly acclaimed Conrad's Eastern World, Professor Sherry provides an interesting blend of biographical reconstruction and investigation into the originals of the main incidents and characters - Kurtz, Nostromo, Verloc and many of the minor figures as well. It has been possible to show in the study of Conrad's source material a movement away from analyses of personal experience or the narrated experiences of others to a manipulation of material entirely outside the bounds of his own experience. This change reveals also a movement in interest from personal and private dilemmas to wider and more public concerns, and shows Conrad developing a progressive sense of the frightening underside of human society. Finally, Professor Sherry considers the play of Conrad's mind over his source material and traces the development of individual works from the given sources to the completed fiction. This reconstruction of Conrad's original materials and the tracing of their development into literary works of great distinction gives us a unique insight into Conrad's preoccupations and art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This the last work of Leo Frankowski and the last chapter of the Adventures of Conrad Stargard. It completes a series begun in 1986 and spanning eight books. The series ends in the best of Leo's tradition of rousing adventure intermixed with the engineering details that fleshed out his earlier work. When Leo returned from Russia in 2006, he began working on the final chapter of Conrad's life. His age and declining health made progress slow, but he was eventually able to complete the plot outline and write part of the final book. Leo and I had agreed that Conrad would grow and change in the last book and find a way to noble retirement or noble death. You will have to read the last chapter to know which path was chosen. Unfortunately, Leo died before finishing the text. On Christmas Morning 2008, he died suddenly and peacefully from the effects of various drugs that he was prescribed. However, the book was well started and the plot known and Leo wanted everyone to know what happened to Conrad. I was familiar with Leo's writing style, having been coached by him to enable me to contribute to earlier writings, so I finished it.

When Tom Kolczyskrenski got his discharge papers from the Air Force, he decided to look up his old pals¾and the world would never be the same. At one time, the oddly mismatched trio had been roommates, then they'd gone their separate ways. Tom, for lack of money, enlisted in the Air Force to learn electronics. The other two had finished college, lan McTavish going into mechanical engineering and a job with GM, and Jim Hasenpfeffer into behavioral science, leading to his having gotten a Department of Defense grant to¾this is serious stuff, now¾study social interactions in motorcycle gangs. So the three set out to be their own motorcycle gang. But these easy riders had barely begun to closely observe their own interactions when they ran across a strange perfectly hemispherical hole in the ground where a house used to be, with everything that had been in the sphere of influence slowly materializing in bits and pieces in the surrounding area. And they found the plans for the machine that had done this, and were sure they could duplicate it and get rich. But before long they would be wishing they had kept on being the three musketeers on bikes, instead of the three stooges of time travel.... Riding into the town of Smoky River on a mangy mule, Dane looks as broken down as his old mount. His Stetson is ragged, his boots are tied together with leather thongs, and he wears a Colt Army revolver with exactly three bullets. He wouldn't know what to say if you asked him where he got the gun, or how he learned to shoot it so well. He doesn't know if Dane is his first name or his last. Something happened that cost him much of his memory, and he can't remember what that something was. For three years he's been traveling the West as a cowboy, a buffalo hunter, a farmhand. Smoky River looks to be a fine place to settle down. If only his past didn't decide to catch up to him here. . .

Book excerpt: Cinnamon Island is a mysterious, unchartered island, with magical history, and undiscovered secrets. The story is an impossible, torrid, fairy tale like, saga of an inter-racial, love triangle involving- a princess, a sailor and a farmer. The period is the late eighteenth century, before the advent of steamships, cell-phones, TV etc. The means of transport of the time were sailing ships, horses, horse driven coaches, and bullock carts. The characters and their emotions resulting in erotic encounters, however, are very much real and intense. Cinnamon Island is a fairy tale, but the picturesque depiction of the erotic love that happens between the characters in this book is no child’s fairy tale, but an adult depiction of love, sex and raw emotions and desires of the characters. The evolvement of the main characters, Irene the princess, Vivek the sailor and Conrad the farmer are stories within the main story. Could you guess the end of this intrigue…

Book excerpt: One moment Conrad Schwartz was suffering from a severe hangover as he hiked through the mountains of present-day Poland, the next he was hurled back to the same country in the 13th century. He remembered from his history classes that in another ten years, Mongol hordes were scheduled to attack, pillage, burn and kill¾and Conrad was likely to suffer all of the above. So, he set out to turn Poland into a world power by introducing universal education, aircraft, radios, steamboats, and generally discourage Mongols or anybody else from messing with either Poland or Conrad. But things weren't going to be quite that simple. . . . The Mongols were not quite as awed by advanced technology as he had hoped. He was under observation by mysterious Time Lords who didn't approve of disruptions in the flow of historical time.Last, and anything but least, he had married the formidable Lady Francine, and there was absolutely nothing simple about that noble-born and tempestuous woman.
