Book excerpt: This Festschrift for Ronald Speirs, Professor of German at the University of Birmingham, contains twenty-four original essays by scholars from Great Britain, Germany, Austria, and Norway. Between them they encompass the entire modern period from the later eighteenth century onwards, and focus on a wide range of German-speaking environments. Several essays throw new light on authors to whom Professor Speirs himself has devoted particular attention (such as Brecht, Thomas Mann, Nietzsche, and Fontane), whilst others discuss writers such as Lenz, Büchner, Böhlau, C. F. Meyer, Keyserling, Jahnn, and Huch. Above all, however, the contributions address the complexities of writing in ideologically diverse contexts, including the Third Reich and the former German Democratic Republic. This interplay between text and context is the cornerstone which links all the essays, as it has consistently informed Ronald Speirs's own work - which combines a scrupulous attention to textual detail with an acute awareness of the socio-political milieux and philosophical influences that shape creative literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fifth volume in a six-volume translation of the major writings of Wilhelm Dilthey (1833-1911), a philosopher and historian of culture who has had a significant, and continuing, influence on twentieth-century Continental philosophy and in a broad range of scholarly disciplines. In addition to his landmark works on the theories of history and the human sciences, Dilthey made important contributions to hermeneutics and phenomenology, aesthetics, psychology, and the methodology of the social sciences. This volume presents Dilthey's principal writings on aesthetics and the philosophical understanding of poetry, as well as representative essays of literary criticism. The essay "The Imagination of the Poet" (also known as his Poetics) is his most sustained attempt to examine the philosophical bearings of literature in relation to psychological and historical theory. Also included are "The Three Epochs of Modern Aesthetics and its Present Task," "Fragments for a Poetics," and two final essays discussing Goethe and Hölderlin. The latter are drawn from Das Erlebnis und die Dichtung, a volume that was acclaimed on publication as a classic of literary criticism and that continues to be a model for the geistesgeschichtliche approach to literary history.

This book was released on 1983 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines in detail the role of imagery in Conrad Ferdinand Meyer's prose works. It shows how intricately formed patterns of imagery impart to Meyer's prose its characteristic flavor and set him apart among the poetic realists of his period. To start, the linguistic forms of Meyer's metaphorical language are analyzed. Seperate chapters then probe the rich clusters of imagery and focus on their characterizing and structural functions. They reveal how images produce oblique perspectives that give rise to an ironic shadow play between appearance and reality. The conclusion concentrates on Der Heilige, the single work that best exemplifies how images are instrumental in creating the complex weave of Meyer's narrative. The nature of Meyer's imagery points to the new wave of symbolism which was soon to make its impact on German literature.
