Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conquest or a Piece of Jade: A New Play in Three Acts I am sending you this play printed instead of type-written because I think you will find it much easier to slip into your pocket and read, and also because I don't know your address, and printed books have a way of finding people without being addressed which type scripts have not yet learnt. So instead of sending my play round, in what people tell me is the usual way, to lots and lots of managers in typescript and wasting ever so much Valuable time while they don't read it, I am sending it to you direct, and hope you will like it. When you read it you will find that there is still another reason why I am glad to see it 'in print. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Conquest: Or, A Piece of Jade (1917) is a drama in three acts by Marie Stopes. Although Stopes is more widely known as the author of Married Love or Love in Marriage, a bestselling work on contraception that guided generations of men and woman on how to nurture happy, healthy sexual relationships, she was also a gifted playwright and poet. Conquest: Or, A Piece of Jade, set in rural New Zealand and London, investigates themes of colonialism, pacifism, and romance. "But I answer you lads, what language do we speak? English! What race are we? Britons! Why, lads, the British over there aren't as British as we are; They are English and Scotch and Irish and Welsh--but what are we? All these British strains mixed! Most of us have some Scotch blood and some English blood and some Irish blood mixed in our veins, many of us have been to other parts of Britain and got a touch of Canada, or Australia, or South Africa into us." While working on their sheep farm in rural New Zealand, Gordon and Robert Hyde are visited by a military recruiter sent to gather men for the fight against Germany. Despite his patriotic fervor, Gordon is denied enlistment because of a pronounced limp. Left behind, emasculated and overwhelmed with guilt, he turns away from his romantic pursuit of Nora Lee to devote himself to political theory. Writing up plans for an international super-parliament with the help of Nora's cousin Loveday, Gordon dreams of presenting his ideas to the British government. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Marie Stopes' Conquest: Or, A Piece of Jade is a classic of British scientific literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book excerpt: A monumental achievement of scholarship, this volume on the Nahua Indians of Central Mexico (often called Aztecs) constitutes our best understanding of any New World indigenous society in the period following European contact. Simply put, the purpose of this book is to throw light on the history of Nahua society and culture through the use of records in Nahuatl, concentrating on the time when the bulk of the extant documents were written, between about 1540-50 and the late eighteenth century. At the same time, the earliest records are full of implications for the very first years after contact, and ultimately for the preconquest epoch as well, both of which are touched on here in ways that are more than introductory or ancillary.

Book excerpt: There is a legend of the New World that has endured for centuries: the strange, tragic tale of a King, a Witch . . . and a blue gem of intoxicating beauty said to grant extraordinary power to whoever possesses it. Archaeologist Juana Sanchez, convinced that she's discovered the key to unlocking the mystery of the fabled Queen Jade, ventures into the Central American jungle alone—just ahead of the relentless pounding fury of Hurricane Mitch. When the terrible storm is over, Juana is gone, and an ancient, long-buried jade mine has been uncovered in the mountains of Guatemala, giving new hope to all obsessed seekers of the legendary stone. But it is a different obsession that plunges Juana's daughter—scholar and bookseller Lola Sanchez—into the remarkable adventure of a lifetime. For only by following the Queen Jade's perilous, cursed trail can Lola hope to find her vanished mother . . . if it isn't already too late.

Book excerpt: The Twenty-Four Histories (Chinese: 二十四史) are the Chinese official historical books covering a period from 3000 BC to the Ming dynasty in the 17th century. As fixed and edited in the Qing dynasty, the whole set contains 3213 volumes and about 40 million words. It is considered one of the most important sources on Chinese history and culture. The title "Twenty-Four Histories" dates from 1775 which was the 40th year in the reign of the Qianlong Emperor. The book presents a full descriptive account of the significance and meaning of the carvings produced in this prize stone by Chinese craftsmen from the earliest times, through the Chou and succeeding dynasties, down to the twentieth century. The text is illustrated with a magnificent series of more than 350 reproductions in color, black and white, and line drawings of choice pieces selected from the chief Asian, European, and American collections. In addition the Chinese art history book explains no only the wealth of symbolic designs used in the decoration of jade but also a large number of the marks and devices by which collectors identify the origin and the date of valued pieces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s Warring States era (ca. 5th–3rd century BCE) was the setting for an explosion of textual production, and one of the most sophisticated and enduring genres of writing from this period was the military text. Social and political changes were driven in large part by the increasing scope and scale of warfare, and some of the best minds of the day (including Sunzi, whose Art of War is still widely read) devoted their attention to the systematic analysis of all factors involved in waging war. Conquer and Govern makes available for the first time in any Western language a corpus of military texts from a long neglected Warring States compendium of historical, political, military, and ritual writings known as the Yi Zhou shu, or Remainder of the Zhou Documents. The texts articulate concretely and vividly the relationship between military conquest of an enemy and incorporation of conquered territories into one’s civilian government, expressed dynamically through the paired Chinese concept of wen and wu, the civil and the martial. Exploring this conceptual dyad as it evolved across the Warring States era into the early Western Han (ca. 2nd–1st century BCE) provides an alternative view of the social and intellectual history of classical China—one based not primarily on philosophical works but on a complex array of ideological writings concerned with the just, effective, and appropriate use of state power. In addition, this study presents a careful reconstruction of the poetic structure of these texts; analyzes their place in the broader discourse on warfare and governance in early China; introduces the many text historical problems of the Yi Zhou shu itself; and offers a synthetic analysis of early Chinese thinking about warfare, strategy, and the early state’s use of coercive power. Conquer and Govern will find a ready audience among specialists and students of Chinese philosophy and history, particularly those interested in the history of military thought and practice, and comparative philosophy.
