Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Basques played a remarkably influential role in the creation and maintenance of Spain’s colonial establishment in the Philippines. Their skills as shipbuilders and businessmen, their evangelical zeal, and their ethnic cohesion and work-oriented culture made them successful as explorers, colonial administrators, missionaries, merchants, and settlers. They continued to play prominent roles in the governance and economy of the archipelago until the end of Spanish sovereignty, and their descendants still contribute in significant ways to the culture and economy of the contemporary Philippines. This book offers important new information about a little-known aspect of Philippine history and the influence of Basque immigration in the Spanish Empire, and it fills an important void in the literature of the Basque diaspora.

Book excerpt: In the first biography in English of the great Argentinian tango singer Carlos Gardel (1890-1935), Collier traces his rise from very modest beginnings to become the first genuine "superstar" of twentieth-century Latin America. In his late teens, Gardel won local fame in the barrios of Buenos Aires singing in cafes and political clubs. By the 1920s, after he switched to tango singing, the songs he wrote and sang enjoyed instant popularity and have become classics of the genre. He began making movies in the 1930s, quickly establishing himself as the most popular star of the Spanish-language cinema, and at the time of his death Paramount was planning to launch his Hollywood career.Collier's biography focuses on Gardel's artistic career and achievements but also sets his life story within the context of the tango tradition, of early twentieth-century Argentina, and of the history of popular entertainment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As interest grows in theories of lifelong learning not only across society but also as an area of serious academic study, the need has arisen for a thorough and critical study of the phenomenon. This distillation of the work of renowned writer Peter Jarvis addresses this need, looking at the processes involved in human learning from birth to old age and moving the field on from previous unsystematic and mainly psychological studies. Instead, Jarvis argues that learning is existential, and so its study must be complex and interdisciplinary. The result is a giant step towards building a complete and integrated theory of how humans learn, taking account of existing theories to see if they can be reconciled with a more complex model. Applying his expert analytical approach to this wide-ranging topic, Jarvis looks in detail at: learning in the social context the transformation of experience the outcomes of learning learning and action cognitive theories emotions and learning experiential learning.

Book excerpt: When ex-supermoddel Lola Carlyle learns that some very -- ahem -- private photos of herself are being peddled on the Internet, she hides out where there's sun and -- she thinks -- safety, until the gossip dies out. Then the private yacht she's blissfully napping on is "commandeered" by some man who says his name is Max Zamora, and that he works for the government. It sounds crazy, but Max is telling the truth -- his cover's been blown, he's on the run, and now he's confronted by a very angry -- and beautiful -- woman. He's seen Lola before -- barely clothed on covers of fashion magazines. But she's more beautiful in person. From the top of her pert blonde head to the tips of her little painted toes, Max finds her sexy, curvy... and a pain in the butt. And that's before she blows up the ship! Now, the unlikely pair is stranded in the middle of the ocean, it's getting very hot -- not just from the sun -- and Lola is about to reveal it all...

Book excerpt: First published in 1982, this influential and classic text poses two questions: what is it that a child learns when he or she learns to write? What can we learn about children, society and ourselves, by looking at this process? The book is based on a close analysis of a series of written texts by primary school children and is written for student teachers with little or no knowledge of linguistics. In this new edition, Gunther Kress has made extensive revisions in the light of recent developments in linguistics and in education. The theoretical focus is now a social semiotic one, which allows a fundamental rethinking of issues such as 'preliteracy' and broad social and cultural questions around the making of texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferdinand Magellan was the first man ever to sail around the world. His voyage was financed 75% by the King of Spain, Charles V, The Holy Roman Emperor, and 25% by Christopher de Haro, a Dutch businessman residing in Spain. The purpose of the trip by Magellan was not Gold, Glory and God, as is commonly believed. Rather, it was for better food, as the basic spices commonly available today, including pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and mace, were not available in Europe and had to be imported through Arab traders, making them outrageously expensive. Although most of the 237 men who embarked on the journey in 1519 died along the way, including Magellan himself who was killed in Cebu in the Philippines, one ship made it back in 1522 with 18 men and a cargo laden with spices, and the expedition earned a financial profit. After the death of Magellan, his remaining men divided into two groups. One group decided to go back to Europe the way that they had come, by crossing the Pacific Ocean. However, they never made it. The other group, led by Juan Sebastian Elcano, made it back to Spain with only one ship, but that ship had a cargo laden with valuable spices including cloves that had been acquired in the Spice Islands, with the result that the entire expedition earned a financial profit, which was the purpose of the expedition in the first place. Of 237 men who had left with Magellan on five ships three years earlier, only 18 were left on the only ship to return. However, not all of the others had died along the way. Some who had been captured by the Portuguese or who had been left behind on the Cape Verde Islands arrived later. A few others had voluntarily stayed behind, preferring the company of the easy women in the Philippines. At least two had been marooned on the coast of Brazil following an unsuccessful attempt at mutiny. There seems to be no record of what happened to those two. Although most of the original 237 were dead, many of them still have never been fully accounted for.
