Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a thorough introduction to groundwater systems analysis and optimization terminology, principles, and techniques Identifies which S-O approaches are appropriate for different types of groundwater quantity (hydraulic optimization) and quality (contaminant transport optimization) problems, whether they be deterministic, stochastic, single-objective, or multiobjective in nature Teaches you how to build your own S-O model or how to choose from available transferrable S-O models Offers guidance and flowcharts for simplifying and solving real-world optimization problems Uses a systems analysis approach to emphasize clear goals, inputs, stimuli, processes, responses, and outputs Teaches you how to develop and adapt optimal management strategies, for implementation or use as metrics (such as for performance-based contracting) Reinforces learning with numerous flowcharts, examples, illustrations, case studies, and a glossary Supplies ancillary material online, including spreadsheets performing as S-O models, PowerPoint slides, reference materials, numerical simulation programming instructions, and a simulator Existing and impending water shortages argue for improving water quantity and quality management. Groundwater Optimization Handbook: Flow, Contaminant Transport, and Conjunctive Management helps you formulate and solve groundwater optimization problems to ensure sustainable supplies of adequate quality and quantity. It shows you how to more effectively use simulation-optimization (S-O) modeling, an economically valuable groundwater management tool that couples simulation models with mathematical optimization techniques. Written for readers of varying familiarity with groundwater hydrology and mathematical optimization, the handbook approaches complex problems realistically. Its techniques have been applied in many legal settings, with produced strategies providing up to 57% improvement over those developed without S-O modeling. These techniques supply constructible designs, planning and management strategies, and metrics for performance-based contracts. Learn how to: Recognize opportunities for applying S-O models Lead client, agency, and consultant personnel through the strategy design and adaptation process Formulate common situations as clear deterministic/stochastic and single/multiobjective mathematical optimization problems Distinguish between problem nonlinearities resulting from physical system characteristics versus management goals Create an S-O model appropriate for your specific needs or select an existing transferrable model Develop acceptable feasible solutions and compute optimal solutions Quantify tradeoffs between multiple objectives Evaluate and adapt a selected optimal strategy, or use it as a metric for comparison Drawing on the author’s more than 30 years of research, consulting, and teaching experience, this practical handbook supplies real-world design procedures, detailed flowcharts, solved problems, lessons learned, and diverse applications. It guides you through the maze of multiple objectives, constraints, and uncertainty to calculate the best strategies for managing flow, contamination, and conjunctive use of groundwater and surface water. About the Author: As the Utah Cooperative Extension Service water quality coordinator, Richard Peralta, PhD, PE, optimized nonpoint and point source contamination management, and collaborated closely with state and federal agencies in technology transfer and public education. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to document for the first time the dimensions and requirements of effective integrated groundwater management (IGM). Groundwater management is a formidable challenge, one that remains one of humanity’s foremost priorities. It has become a largely non-renewable resource that is overexploited in many parts of the world. In the 21st century, the issue moves from how to simply obtain the water we need to how we manage it sustainably for future generations, future economies, and future ecosystems. The focus then becomes one of understanding the drivers and current state of the groundwater resource, and restoring equilibrium to at-risk aquifers. Many interrelated dimensions, however, come to bear when trying to manage groundwater effectively. An integrated approach to groundwater necessarily involves many factors beyond the aquifer itself, such as surface water, water use, water quality, and ecohydrology. Moreover, the science by itself can only define the fundamental bounds of what is possible; effective IGM must also engage the wider community of stakeholders to develop and support policy and other socioeconomic tools needed to realize effective IGM. In order to demonstrate IGM, this book covers theory and principles, embracing: 1) an overview of the dimensions and requirements of groundwater management from an international perspective; 2) the scale of groundwater issues internationally and its links with other sectors, principally energy and climate change; 3) groundwater governance with regard to principles, instruments and institutions available for IGM; 4) biophysical constraints and the capacity and role of hydroecological and hydrogeological science including water quality concerns; and 5) necessary tools including models, data infrastructures, decision support systems and the management of uncertainty. Examples of effective, and failed, IGM are given. Throughout, the importance of the socioeconomic context that connects all effective IGM is emphasized. Taken as a whole, this work relates the many facets of effective IGM, from the catchment to global perspective.

Book excerpt: If water resources are to be distributed efficiently, equitably and cost-effectively in this rapidly changing world, then it is clear that current water management practices are no longer feasible. Innovative approaches are required to meet the increasing water demands of a growing world population and economy and the needs of the ecosystems supporting them. New approaches have to be employed at global, national and local levels. In Rethinking Water Management, a new generation of water experts from around the world examine the critical challenges confronting the water profession, including rainwater and groundwater management, recycling and reuse, water rights, transboundary access to water and financing of water. They offer important new perspectives on the use, management and conservation of fresh water, in terms of both quantity and quality, for the domestic, agricultural and industrial sectors, and show how a new set of paradigms can be applied to successfully manage water for the future. Caroline Figueres is Head of the Urban Infrastructure Department at UNESCO-IHE Water Education Institute in The Netherlands.Cecilia Tortajada is Vice President of the Third World Centre for Water Management in Mexico and Vice President-elect of the International Water Resources Association. Johan Rockstr'm is Water Resources Expert at UNESCO-IHE.

Book excerpt: Reports from the United Nations suggest that as much as forty percent of the global population could be without adequate freshwater supplies by 2015, leading some experts to predict that future wars will be fought over water rather than oil. Yet to date, most nation-states have been able to develop viable freshwater agreements to share this precious resource. Frederick D. Gordon examines how effective these accords are in sharing and redistributing water and whether they are sufficient to meet the increasing threat of water scarcity. Using an innovative ranking system, he assesses the significance of cooperation within both bilateral and multilateral accords, including the Israeli-Palestinian Interim Accords of 1993–1995, the Lesotho Highlands Water Treaty of 1986, and the 1994 Convention on Cooperation for the Protection and Sustainable Use of the River Danube. Gordon identifies central factors and stakeholders that are necessary for mitigating the risk of conflict and presents a template for understanding how state behavior can manage and sustain regional water resources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a review of the conjunctive water use of surface water and groundwater within the Rechna Doab. The Rechna Doab is located in the Punjab province and has an area of 2.98 million hectares (Figure 1). The cultivated area in the Rechna Doab is regarded as the granary of the Punjab province and comprises eight districts, namely, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Narowal and Hafizabad. The area consists of two distinct agroclimatic zones, i.e. the Punjab Rice-Wheat (PRW) zone and the Punjab Sugarcane-Wheat (PSW) zone (WAPDA, 1979). Irrigated agriculture started in the Rechna Doab in 1892 via Lower Chenab Canal. The irrigation system in the Rechna Doab consists of 504 km of branch canals, 240 km of main canals and 373 km of link canals, and about 0.2 million tubewells are installed in the freshwater areas. This report is prepared to provide an overview of land and water resources available in the Rechna Doab and the institutional issues that need to be addressed for effective conjunctive water management in the Rechna Doab.
