Sin darnos cuenta, acabamos creyendo que la ciencia tiene en sí todas las respuestas. ¿Le queda todavía algún papel a la religión? Algunos piensan que, ante el avance de la ciencia, ya no queda lugar para la fe religiosa. Sin embargo, hay muchas preguntas -las que se refieren al sentido de la existencia del universo y del propio hombre- a las que las ciencias no pueden dar respuesta y a las que sí trata de responder la fe cristiana.¿Qué relación hay entre ciencia y religión? Hay quienes piensan que entre ambas sólo ha habido un continuo conflicto en el que la ciencia siempre ha salido ganando. Una gran parte de dicho conflicto se debe a una mala comprensión de la mutua independencia y autonomía de ambas esferas. Ni la ciencia puede entrometerse en el ámbito de lo religioso, ni la religión en el de lo científico. Sin embargo, una pura neutralidad entre ciencia y fe ya no es hoy aceptable. Hay que buscar nuevas formas de relación que, yendo más allá del reconocimiento de su mutua independencia, establezca entre ellas un verdadero diálogo constructivo. La religión tiene que escuchar lo que las ciencias aportan sobre la naturaleza de la realidad material, y éstas deben dejar que la inspiración religiosa impregne de sentido la actividad científica, porque el progreso científico-tecnológico no es un fin en sí mismo, sino que debe orientarse al bien del ser humano.Agustín Udías Vallina, S.J. es catedrático de Geofísica en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y profesor de Filosofía e Historia de la Ciencia en la Universidad Pontificia de Comillas. Ha ejercido la investigación y la docencia en las Universidades de California (Berkeley), Frankfurt y Barcelona y es autor de varios libros y artículos sobre temas de Geofísica y Sismología.
