Depending on the partners' strategies in conflict, the potential for disagreement can quickly become a real obstacle between them and can even threaten to end the relationship. To better determine the source of stress, three different research paradigms are presented to explain the conflict process and why it occurs, as well as to suggest what can be done to help partners manage conflict and preserve intimacy. The systems-interactionists' approach is presented first. This section discusses methods used to characterize destructive and constructive communication behavior patterns and strategies for dispute resolution. Next, the rules-interventionist approach examines ways in which a mediator can help divorcing couples end one relationship and begin another. Finally, the cognitive-exchange approach is considered. Methods used to determine the antecedent conditions which influence partners' reactions during conflict are presented and approaches for helping them modify destructive communication strategies are discussed. Throughout, terminology and measurements are made to correspond across disciplines so that the work is accessible to all. In addition to relating particular studies and research programs to their appropriate research approaches, the book shows how conflict is uniquely handled when distressed partners engage in problem solving, when disputing partners engage in mediation, and when same and opposite sex partners participate in developing relationships. Comparison and contrast emphasize the role played by conflict communication behavior, rules, and strategies found in developing intimate relationships, the destructive conflict characteristic of emotionally distressed couples, and the bargaining/negotiation characteristic of formal mediation. Book excerpt: Attachment styles are usually associated with attachment to a primary caregiver such as the mother. They include secure, anxious-ambivalent (preoccupied) and avoidant styles of attachment. The focus of this book is on attachment to an adult partner in a close relationship. It examines how the combination of attachment styles to one's partner and to one's primary caregiver is related to couples' conflict beliefs, conflict resolution styles, satisfaction with their relationships and communication accuracy. We conducted two studies to explore these associations. The first study was an on-line survey. The second study videotaped couples dealing with conflict around a major disagreement. We found that relationship satisfaction and conflict beliefs were influenced by specific attachment to the partner. Conversely, positive problem solving, withdrawal and compliance were heavily influenced by more general current conceptualizations of primary caregiver attachment. This book is likely to be of interest to couples' counsellors and family therapists in their understanding of how attachment styles can influence their clients' handling of conflict.

This study's sample was composed of 189 participants, with 100 females and 89 males. The average participant age was 30.29. The setting for this study was a large Midwestern urban University. Findings suggested that there is an effect of level of differentiation on the conflict resolution styles used in romantic relationships, with a high level of differentiation being associated with the utilization of the integrating style. Implications for therapy are outlined.

Book excerpt: Satisfaction within interpersonal relationships plays an extensive role in the overall well-being of human beings (Campbell, et al. 2005). In light of this, there is great significance in studying predictors of Relationship Satisfaction (RS). While research on Adult Attachment (AA) Theory (Brennan & Shaver, 1995), and Conflict Resolution (CR) styles (Gottman, 1994), has found both to independently influence RS, there is still little insight into how CR style affects or better explains the relationship between AA style and RS. The present study conducted a correlational study to explore these missing links. The sample included 477 premarital individuals aged between 18 and 40 years. Participants completed online questionnaires measuring AA style and CR style, and, in addition for those currently in a relationship (N = 271), RS. Correlation analyses supported previous findings of negative correlations between Insecure AA style, positive CR styles and RS and positive correlations between Secure AA style, positive CR styles and RS. Furthermore, mediation analyses found that use of CR styles; Collaborating, Compromising and Avoidant, partially mediated the relationship between AA and RS. Likewise, moderation analyses found the same CR styles to also demonstrate a significant moderation effect between the AA subscales; Anxiety and Avoidance, and RS. Regardless of CR style use, RS scores did not differ for those with low AA subscale scores. Yet, with high Collaborating/Compromising use and low Avoiding use, RS scores were significantly greater for those with high AA subscales scores. These results are important as they allow more insight into predictors of RS and aid the development of interventions aimed at helping individuals to adopt more positive styles of resolving interpersonal conflict, which may increase not only their satisfaction within their intimate relationships but ultimately in life in general.
