The vices of our Enemy, the hated Creator, have taken root in the heart of the former Captain Malthus as he's settled into the role of wizard cadet Soren Marlowe. For the Dark Lord's sake, he joined a damn sewing club! Not all is bleak, though. He still has a devil's penchant for self-preservation, and the drive to do whatever it takes to return to us, including joining the Holy Brotherhood of Mankind. We do love the moxie of an undercover devil joining the most virulent demon-haters in all the human realms. However, there is always a price. A captured enemy knows about Malthus' demonic nature. His only hope is to assassinate him before the Wizard Corps can extract the truth from him. We know Captain Malthus well. He wouldn't hesitate to snuff out anybody to save himself. The question is, will Soren Marlowe?

The plan fell to shambles as he switched sides to save his fellow students. Worse, he has fallen to his human half and betrayed us, and all because he couldn't stand to kill a few human trollops! He couldn't even save them all, which serves him right. On top of that, his human girlfriend Kiyo dumped him over his constant lies. Human ladies are so picky! Now he has to deal with his failure and a sense of guilt for his actions. He is fortunate that the Wizard Corps decided to shuttle him off to Iceland to continue his magical training. It will give him some distance, some time to think, and, Dark Lord willing, to let that guilt stew and fester into resentment. After all, he's had his taste of human romance and the pain that its loss brings. That might just connect him with his true self and bring him back to Our Father's dark embrace. There are two obstacles to that plan, though. A familiar face has the same posting to Iceland, one who has the power to bring out the better angels of his nature. If she has her way, Malthus will be on the straight and narrow. More promisingly, another face, no longer so familiar, is also lurking around in the background, ready to bring the weight of his past sins down upon him. Can Malthus keep his head and neck attached and stop the rot in his heart? Either way, it will be delightful to watch him squirm.

If they knew they had an exiled devil in their midst, they'd kill him in an instant. However, war makes strange bedfellows, and we have been quite clear: if he wants to come home to his fellow devils, he needs to destroy something big. They don't come much bigger than the Nagoya Academy of Magic, housed in a tower at the center of an enormous forest. If he knocks it down, he'll cripple the Wizard Corps for a generation. It's a pity that he's still attached to his new girlfriend, Kiyo. It makes him hesitant and soft, hardly the traits you want in a saboteur! Will he avoid being discovered? Will he be able to keep her and his other friends out of the crossfire? Doubtful. Hell, when the spells start flying, our undercover devil will have a hard enough time saving his own skin. It will be fun to watch him try, though!

Book excerpt: Have you heard of Captain Malthus? He was a rising star in the demonic Grim Horde. Shame he threw it all away. Such wasted potential. Now embedded at the Nagoya Academy of Magic under the name Soren Marlowe, he's made friends and even taken a lover. He couldn't have imagined it going so well when he was exiled, but it's almost gone off without a hitch. Almost. One of his teachers knows that he isn't really Soren. Worse, she has powerful and mysterious allies. Malthus can't fight an enemy he can't see and she could expose him on the slightest whim. Perhaps it's time to move on? He tries to tell himself he wouldn't miss his new life. That he isn't so far gone. Even as he helps his sworn enemies with their magic lessons and love lives. Even as he spoils his girlfriend. After all, it's only for the cover. It's not like he's become attached. We always knew he was soft. When will he figure that out?

A well-connected father. Top tier magical talent. Military glory. He should have coasted to a life of luxury among the cream of devil society. And then he threw it all away by romancing the wrong devil's daughter. With his literal neck on the line, he was exiled on a spy mission deep in the heart of human territory. They meant it to be a death sentence, but it didn't need to be. All the half-human had to do was keep his head down and not draw attention to himself until things blew over. Shame he wasn't the type of devil to learn from his mistakes. This time, it wasn't a woman who was his downfall. It was several. Such a shame, indeed. He was such a promising young devil. Book excerpt: “Readers fascinated with the Romanovs and this tumultuous period in Russian history will be enthralled by this deliciously dark and memorable novel.” —Publishers Weekly Inspired by real characters, this transporting historical fiction debut spins the fascinating story of two princesses in the Romanov court who practiced black magic, befriended the Tsarina, and invited Rasputin into their lives—forever changing the course of Russian history. As daughters of the impoverished King of Montenegro, Militza and Stana must fulfill their duty to their father and leave their beloved home for St. Petersburg to be married into senior positions in the Romanov court. For their new alliances to the Russian nobility will help secure the future of the sisters’ native country. Immediately, Militza and Stana feel like outcasts as the aristocracy shuns them for their provincial ways and for dabbling in the occult. Undeterred, the sisters become resolved to make their mark by falling in with the lonely, depressed Tsarina Alexandra, who—as an Anglo-German—is also an outsider and is not fully accepted by members of the court. After numerous failed attempts to precipitate the birth of a son and heir, the Tsarina is desperate and decides to place her faith in the sisters’ expertise with black magic. Promising the Tsarina that they will be able to secure an heir for the Russian dynasty, Militza and Stana hold séances and experiment with rituals and spells. Gurus, clairvoyants, holy fools, and charlatans all try their luck. The closer they become to the Tsarina and the royal family, the more their status—and power—is elevated. But when the sisters invoke a spiritual shaman, who goes by the name of Rasputin, the die is cast. For they have not only irrevocably sealed their own fates—but also that of Russia itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “If there were a Guinness Book of World Records entry for ‘amount of times having prayed the sinner’s prayer,’ I’m pretty sure I’d be a top contender,” says pastor and author J. D. Greear. He struggled for many years to gain an assurance of salvation and eventually learned he was not alone. “Lack of assurance” is epidemic among evangelical Christians. In Stop Asking Jesus Into Your Heart, J. D. shows that faulty ways of present- ing the gospel are a leading source of the confusion. Our presentations may not be heretical, but they are sometimes misleading. The idea of “asking Jesus into your heart” or “giving your life to Jesus” often gives false assurance to those who are not saved—and keeps those who genuinely are saved from fully embracing that reality. Greear unpacks the doctrine of assurance, showing that salvation is a posture we take to the promise of God in Christ, a posture that begins at a certain point and is maintained for the rest of our lives. He also answers the tough questions about assurance: What exactly is faith? What is repentance? Why are there so many warnings that seem to imply we can lose our salvation? Such issues are handled with respect to the theological rigors they require, but Greear never loses his pastoral sensitivity or a communication technique that makes this message teachable to a wide audience from teens to adults.
