Book excerpt: Memoirs of Casanova - Volume 14: Switzerland by Giacomo Casanova I Resolve to Become a Monk-I go to Confession-Delay of aFortnight-Giustiniani, the Apostle Capuchin-I Alter my Mind; MyReasons-My Pranks at the Inn-I Dine With the Abbot The cool way in which the abbot told these cock-and-bull stories gave me an inclination to laughter, which the holiness of the place and the laws of politeness had much difficulty in restraining. All the same I listened with such an attentive air that his reverence was delighted with me and asked where I was staying. "Nowhere," said I; "I came from Zurich on foot, and my first visit was to your church." I do not know whether I pronounced these words with an air of compunction, but the abbot joined his hands and lifted them to heaven, as if to thank God for touching my heart and bringing me there to lay down the burden of my sins. I have no doubt that these were his thoughts, as I have always had the look of a great sinner. The abbot said it was near noon and that he hoped I would do him the honour of dining with him, and I accepted with pleasure, for I had had nothing to eat and I knew that there is usually good cheer in such places. I did not know where I was and I did not care to ask, being willing to leave him under the impression that I was a pilgrim come to expiate my sins. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "THE MEMOIRS OF CASANOVA - All 6 Volumes in One Premium Illustrated Edition" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. A series of adventures wilder and more fantastic than the wildest of romances, written down with the exactitude of a business diary; a view of men and cities from Naples to Berlin, from Madrid and London to Constantinople and St. Petersburg; the 'vie intime' of the eighteenth century depicted by a man, who to-day sat with cardinals and saluted crowned heads, and tomorrow lurked in dens of profligacy and crime; a book of confessions penned without reticence and without penitence; a record of forty years of "occult" charlatanism; a collection of tales of successful imposture, of 'bonnes fortunes', of marvellous escapes, of transcendent audacity, told with the humour of Smollett and the delicate wit of Voltaire. Who is there interested in men and letters, and in the life of the past, who would not cry, "Where can such a book as this be found?" Yet the above catalogue is but a brief outline, a bare and meager summary, of the book known as "THE MEMOIRS OF CASANOVA"; a work absolutely unique in literature. He who opens these wonderful pages is as one who sits in a theatre and looks across the gloom, not on a stage-play, but on another and a vanished world. Giacomo Casanova (1725-1798) was an Italian adventurer and author from the Republic of Venice. He often signed his works Jacques Casanova de Seingalt after he began writing in French following his second exile from Venice. He has become so famous for his often complicated and elaborate affairs with women that his name is now synonymous with "womanizer". He associated with European royalty, popes and cardinals, along with luminaries such as Benjamin Franklin, Voltaire, Goethe, and Mozart.

Book excerpt: The Memoirs of Casanova Giacomo Casanova - With 'The Memoirs of Casanova,' William Pocock offers us a newly abridged translation of Giacomo Casanova's notorious 'Story of My Life.' Casanova dashed through an extremely controversial life in pursuit of love and fortune that is well worth reading. In his final years he wrote down his memoirs to make confession, reflect on his many adventures, and describe the vast array of people he met in brilliant detail. Perhaps too much detail, as his 1.25 million words, though very entertaining, are a bit more than most busy readers are willing to endure. This edition seamlessly distills his story from 3,875 into 1,188 pages, encompassing his entire life. Casanova's deep interest in romantic poetry, Greco-Roman myth, and Enlightenment ideals inspired his driving passions, with countless lovers and broken promises left behind. Casanova's great love affairs, the diverse variety of his seductions, are maintained here to offer the reader a representation of the whole. His memoirs are most engaging in his pursuit of romance, intense intrigues, and impassioned letters, fully explored in this essential version. The Chevalier de Seingalt was much more than the libertine playboy of popular imagination, as the following pages will reveal. If his memoirs are now considered a great masterpiece of French literature, it's largely due to its historical significance. Casanova's extensive travels and a lifetime of journalism enabled him to offer insightful portraits of the various humble and notable inhabitants of 18th century Europe. Through the magic of his words that distant world springs to life for us now and forever. In recent years, his memoirs have risen from the depths of moral outrage to the most exalted dignity within his beloved France. In 2011 his original manuscript, designated a 'national treasure' by the French government, was acquired by the National Library for $9.6 million, the institution's most expensive acquisition to date.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memoirs of Casanova (1792) is the autobiography of Italian adventure and socialite Giacomo Casanova. Written at the end of his life, the Memoirs capture the experiences of one of Europe’s most notorious figures, a man whose escapades as a gambler, womanizer, and socialite are matched only by his unique gift for sharing them with the world. More than perhaps any other man, Casanova sought to emulate the lessons of the Enlightenment on the level of everyday life, a sentiment captured perfectly in the opening sentence of his Memoirs: “I will begin with this confession: whatever I have done in the course of my life, whether it be good or evil, has been done freely; I am a free agent.” Memoirs of Casanova Volume X finds Giacomo Casanova in grave danger, perhaps the most serious of his life. Having fallen into the trap of Manucci, a spy for the state, Casanova is arrested and sentenced without trial to five years imprisonment. Held in the infamous Leads, the prison under the Doge’s Palace, he suffers in solitary confinement through unbearable heat, overwhelming darkness, and an infestation of fleas. After months in this cell, he is moved from solitary confinement, given better clothes and accommodations, and allowed to go outside for brief, supervised walks. Seeing an opportunity, Casanova begins planning his escape, collecting tools and conspiring with a fellow prisoner in order to achieve his freedom. When the day arrives, and after several aborted attempts, he seizes his only chance. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Giacomo Casanova’s Memoirs of Casanova is a classic of European literature reimagined for modern readers.

Having excelled in his study of law at the University of Padua, Casanova embarks on an ill-fated career as a cleric. Drawn further toward the life of a dandy than that of a man of God, he moves within some of Venice’s highest social circles while womanizing and developing an addiction to gambling. After being forced to leave the seminary due to a debt-related imprisonment, Casanova manages to gain employment with a powerful Bishop in Rome. But his taste for freedom and fast-living proves much too strong, and soon ends his religious career for good. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Giacomo Casanova’s Memoirs of Casanova is a classic of European literature reimagined for modern readers.

Using his abundant wit and ability to make connections, Casanova has found success as a spy and diplomat for the French government. At the start of the Seven Years’ War, he is sent on a mission to Holland to procure financial backing for the treasury through the sale of discounted bonds. There, he acquires the largest fortune of his life, making enough to open a silk manufactory. Turning down a title and pension, he manages to squander his earnings through mismanagement, ill-advised investments, and sexual impropriety. Soon, despite his recent success streak, the mercurial Casanova once again finds himself in trouble with the law. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Giacomo Casanova’s Memoirs of Casanova is a classic of European literature reimagined for modern readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this passionate and searching book, Anthony Kronman offers a third way—beyond atheism and religion—to the God of the modern world We live in an age of disenchantment. The number of self-professed “atheists” continues to grow. Yet many still feel an intense spiritual longing for a connection to what Aristotle called the “eternal and divine.” For those who do, but demand a God that is compatible with their modern ideals, a new theology is required. This is what Anthony Kronman offers here, in a book that leads its readers away from the inscrutable Creator of the Abrahamic religions toward a God whose inexhaustible and everlasting presence is that of the world itself. Kronman defends an ancient conception of God, deepened and transformed by Christian belief—the born-again paganism on which modern science, art, and politics all vitally depend. Brilliantly surveying centuries of Western thought—from Plato to Augustine, Aquinas, and Kant, from Spinoza to Nietzsche, Darwin, and Freud—Kronman recovers and reclaims the God we need today.
