Book Synopsis Industrial Minerals by : Patrick Degryse
Download or read book Industrial Minerals written by Patrick Degryse and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue of Aardkundige Mededelingen deals with industrial minerals, their resources, characteristics and applications. It is the result of an academic session on industrial minerals in honour of Em. Prof. Dr. R. Ottenburgs. The contributions are organized according to five topics. In a first part, 'The Industrial Mineral World', some considerations on our natural resources, their use and political impact are presented. In a second part of the study, 'Aggregates and Natural Building Stone', a number of case-studies on the use of industrial minerals as aggregate and ornamental or building stone are discussed. In a third part of the volume, 'Mortar, Cement and Concrete', the study of ancient mortars as well as exploratory research into new materials is illustrated. In a fourth session, 'Clays and Soils', environmental aspects of soils and the economical use of clay deposits are highlighted. In a fifth and final part of the book, 'Steel', the link between ores and industrial minerals is made. It is clear that the study of industrial minerals has many faces and covers many disciplines. The impact of industrial minerals on the world's economy, but also on the environment, cannot be emphasized enough. This book gives an overview of the wide and rich diversity of research currently performed in the realm of the industrial minerals.
Book Synopsis Industrial Minerals and Their Uses by : Peter A. Ciullo
Download or read book Industrial Minerals and Their Uses written by Peter A. Ciullo and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 1996-12-31 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multi-authored handbook is a unique cross-industry resource for formulators and compounders, and an invaluable reference for the producers of formulated commodities and industrial minerals. Monographs on each of the common functional industrial mineralsùasbestos, barite, calcium carbonate, diatomite, feldspar, gypsum, hormite, kaolin, mica, nepheline syenite, perlite, pyrophyllite, silica, smectite, talc, vermiculite, wollastonite, and zeoliteùinclude an overview of natural and commercial varieties, market size, and application areas. These are supported by descriptions of mineral structures and the wedding of minerals and chemicals through mineral surface modification. This orientation to the minerals and their uses forms the foundation for chapters where they are presented in the context of the overall technology of various consuming industries. Each of these industry-specific presentations covers both the chemical and mineral raw materials used by the formulator, how these are combined, and relevant test methods. These chapters serve a dual purpose. Each clarifies for technologists the function and value of the mineral constituents of their products. Equally important, they provide a primer on the technology of industries other than their own, so that raw material, formulation, processing and testing considerations can be compared and contrasted. The book concludes with a formulary demonstrating how specific mineral and chemical ingredients are actually compounded in major application areas, and technical data on scores of commercial mineral products.

Download or read book Mining and Sustainable Development written by Sumit. K. Lodhia and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mining is a transformative activity which has numerous economic, social and environmental impacts. These impacts can be both positive and adverse, enhancing as well as disrupting economies, ecosystems and communities. The extractive industries have been criticised heavily for their adverse impacts and involvement in significant social and environmental scandals. More recently, these industries have sought to respond to negative perceptions and have embraced the core principles of sustainability. This sector could be regarded as a leader in sustainability initiatives, evident from the various developments and frameworks in mining and sustainability that have emerged over time. This book reviews current topical issues in mining and sustainable development. It addresses the changing role of minerals in society, the social acceptance of mining, due diligence in the mining industry, critical and contemporary debates such as mining and indigenous peoples and transit worker accommodation, corporate sustainability matters such as sustainability reporting and taxation, and sustainability solutions through an emphasis on renewable energy and shared-used infrastructure. Written by experts from Australia, Europe and North America, but including examples from both developed and developing countries, the chapters provide a contemporary understanding of sustainability opportunities and challenges in the mining industry. The book will be of interest to practitioners, government and civil society as well as scholars and students with interests in mining and sustainable development.
