They are two different types of form. We find very often that rating in respect to each other is better than the final standard. But we need something more than this. Here is an A teacher; here is another. How does the one resemble the first? If we need a principal, which Shall we take? The ordinary scale of passing on teachers is a very difficult one to handle. It becomes very difficult to pass on these various elements of a teacher's ability. On the other hand, there are things we need to know to handle the question. The following elements are considered essential to teaching ability: (1) vitality, (2) personality, (3) general intelligence, (4) social intelligence dealing with professional work (5) professional spirit, (6) professional ability, (7) professional leadership, (8) executive ability, (9) adaptability. On this kind of card we have the usual division of 10 points. The rating of these teachers is in a summary of the elements named in the foregoing Slide. If there are any products or by-products of education which are too subtle to be distinguished or judged as existing in greater or less amounts, or as having higher or lower quality, we may be suspicious of their actual existence. Any quality or ability of human nature that is detectable is also measurable. It remains only to discover more and more accurate means of measurement.
