Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Confederate Women of Arkansas in the Civil War, 1861-'65: Memorial Reminiscences, November 1907 The State Annual Reunion of the Arkansas United Confederate Veterans, held at Fort Smith, October 17-19, 1906 appointed, through the commander, Gen. X. T. Roberts, a committee of five veterans, J. H. Berry, V. Y. Cook, Charles Coffin, Dan W. Jones and J. M. Lucey, to arrange for the cooperation of the United Confederate Veterans of Arkansas and Sons of Veterans with the general committee of the United Confederates of the South for the erection of at least one monument in each of the Southern States to commemorate the heroism of the Southern women in the Civil war period. Started Five Years Ago. This monument movement came into prominence five years ago, when the fact began to dawn upon the minds of the old veterans and sons of veterans that the women of the South had borne a very conspicuous part in the glorious achievements of the Southern soldiery, so much so that had it not been for their superb nobility of character in cheerfully bidding what was often a last farewell to their loved ones and in working away the beauty and tenderness of Southern rearing in country and town to support their lonely families, the war could not have been sustained for any considerable length of time. But when this fact did finally dawn upon the minds of the old veteran they resolved to attest their appreciation of the greatness of the Southern women, who excelled the historic Roman matron and Spartan mother, by gathering and publishing the reminiscences of the work of the women of the South in the Civil war period and by erecting at least one monument in each Southern State to commemorate their heroism. Book excerpt: Most of the Union soldiers who experienced the wrath of Southern women during the American Civil War came away feeling that fighting the Southern men was a more appealing proposition. General William Tecumseh Sherman said, “You women are the toughest set I ever knew. The men would have given up long ago but for you. I believe you would keep this war up for thirty years." The great value of the present volume is that it was not written for an audience outside the unreconstructed south. Even after forty years, the embers of bitterness and defense of the "Lost Cause" echo in these uncensored pages. Yet it's not all vitriol and horror. Included are stories of great humor and a remembrance of Ulysses S. Grant's kindness to a wounded rebel son. These are the women who lived through the pain and suffering of the Civil War in the South, some privileged and some...just folks. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Book excerpt: Colonel Fremantle, a British Army observer in the Confederacy, stated that when this war is over, the independence of the country will be due, in a great measure, to the women. This long-overdue collection of essays examines the roles of Confederate women in a surprising new light as modern research shows that Confederate women served as soldiers, scouts, and spies in addition to their more traditional roles.

While a true Virginian, the lady also speaks well of her experiences with Union soldiers and officers. Real names of the subjects were changed in deference to the wishes of living persons at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True stories of Southern women in the Civil War for “any reader with an interest in women’s history . . . An eye-opening experience.” —ForeWord The women featured in this anthology refute the common belief that Southern women were delicate and fragile. These Confederate women started relief organizations and militia companies, learned how to fire a musket, and even worked as spies. One courageous woman disguised herself as a male officer and recruited troops from around the South. Confederate Women includes ten essays about the crucial role Southern women played during and after the Civil War, believing that the war was “certainly ours as well as that of the men.” Excerpts from correspondence with their sons, fathers, husbands, and other women shed light on their unique position in America’s past. Often women are left out of history books, only to fade into the shadows of time. Thanks to Mauriel Phillips Joslyn and her contributing authors, these women will remain a part of history, never to be forgotten. “An affecting reminder that Southern women faced the challenges of the wartime era with courage and determination.” —Civil War News Previously published as Valor and Lace: The Roles of Confederate Women 1861–1865

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a memoir about the Civil War era written by a Southern woman who lived during the conflict. From the intro: " THIS history was told over the tea-cups. One winter, in the South, I had for my neighbor a gentle, little brown-haired lady, who spent many evenings at my fireside, as I at hers, where with bits of needlework in our hands we gossiped away as women will. I discovered in her an unconscious heroine, and her Civil War experiences made ever an interesting topic. Wishing to share with others the reminiscences she gave me, I seek to present them here in her own words. Just as they stand, they are, I believe, unique, possessing at once the charm of romance and the veracity of history. They supply a graphic, if artless, picture of the social life of one of the most interesting and dramatic periods of our national existence. The stories were not related in strict chronological sequence, but I have endeavored to arrange them in that way. Otherwise, I have made as few changes as possible. Out of deference to the wishes of living persons, her own and her husband's real names have been suppressed and others substituted; in the case of a few of their close personal friends, and of some whose names would not be of special historical value, the same plan has been followed. Those who read this book are admitted to the sacred councils of close friends, and I am sure they will turn with reverent fingers these pages of a sweet and pure woman's life - a life on which, since those fireside talks of ours, the Death-Angel has set his seal. Memoirs and journals written not because of their historical or political significance, but because they are to the writer the natural expression of what life has meant to him in the moment of living, have a value entirely apart from literary quality. They bring us close to the human soul - the human soul in undress. We find ourselves without preface or apology in personal, intimate relation with whatever makes the yesterday, to-day, to-morrow of the writer. When this current of events and conditions is impelled and directed by a vital and formative period in the history of a nation, we have only to follow its course to see what history can never show us, and what fiction can unfold to us only in part - how the people thought, felt, and lived who were not making history, or did not know that they were. This is the essential value of A Virginia Girl in the Civil War: it shows us simply, sincerely, and unconsciously what life meant to an American woman during the vital and formative period of American history. That this American woman was also a Virginian with all a Virginian's love for Virginia and loyalty to the South, gives to her record of those days that are still "the very fiber of us" a fidelity rarely found in studies of local color. Meanwhile, her grateful affection for the Union soldiers, officers and men, who served and shielded her, should lift this story to a place beyond the pale of sectional prejudice."
