Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cathodic protection of reinforced concrete structures is a technique for rescuing corrosion damaged structures and, in certain instances, preventing them from corroding in the first place, and its use is growing. This book is for specialist contractors, large consultants and owners of corrosion damaged structures, and looks at international experience with this technique. It examines why corrosion is occurring, the differences in the application of CP with the stark dichotomy in its success and failure, and finally ways in which its performance can be improved on future installations. Information is valuable, as the success or failure of the CP system has a marked effect on the service life of the structure.

Download or read book Corrosion of Steel in Concrete written by John P. Broomfield and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion of Steel in Concrete: Understanding, Investigation and Repair is a guide for designing, constructing and maintaining reinforced concrete structures, such as buildings and bridges which are subject to reinforcement corrosion. It presents the basics of theory and practice in steel corrosion in concrete and reviews the latest research and developments, such as progress on measuring the corrosion threshold for chloride-induced corrosion. This third edition compares the currently proliferating major national and international standards and guidance documents. New developments are considered, such as hybrid anodes for electrochemical treatment and the latest research and developments in assessment, such as the use of ground penetrating radar to measure the chloride content of the concrete cover. It overhauls coverage of electrochemical repair and rehabilitation techniques and outlines recent innovations in structural repair and construction and investigates their implications for durability. The book is ideal for practitioners and graduate students in structural engineering and concrete technology.

Cathodic protection was successfully applied to reinforced concrete test slabs using a commercially available conductive paint and a conductive Portland cement mortar as an anodic coating applied to the surface of the concrete.
Book Synopsis Performance of a Conductive-paint Anode in Cathodic Protection Systems for Inland Concrete Bridge Piers in Virginia by : Gerardo G. Clemeña
Download or read book Performance of a Conductive-paint Anode in Cathodic Protection Systems for Inland Concrete Bridge Piers in Virginia written by Gerardo G. Clemeña and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of efforts to identify effective and durable anodes for use in cathodic protection (CP) of reinforced concrete members, a water-based, electrically conductive paint was evaluated for use as the secondary anode in CP systems for protecting inland concrete piers. In such piers, the concrete areas susceptible to rebar corrosion are not constantly wet as they are in marine environments. The paint was used in two CP systems, one 6 years old and the other 8 years old, that were designed to protect the concrete piers of two pairs of twin bridges in inland Virginia. Measurements of circuit current, circuit voltage, rebar potential, and 4-hour depolarization indicated that the two CP systems were operating as expected and providing more than sufficient protection to the rebars in the concrete piers. Paint deterioration, such as peeling, cracks, and stains, occurred in both systems. The extent of the deterioration was estimated with the use of a newly developed digital image analysis method, and the largest area of damage was 2.40 percent of the total coated concrete area of a pier protected by the older CP system. Since this unusually large area was restricted to the upstream-side footing of the pier, it was attributed to abrasion and damage caused by timber debris crashing against the footing as the result of recent severe flooding. Other than this area, the natural deterioration in the paint system ranged from only 0 to 0.37 percent. Similar deterioration in the second paint system ranged from only 0 to 0.14 percent. Most of the paint deterioration in both systems was at the ends of the pier caps, where the concrete was not sheltered from rain by the deck overhang. This suggests that even with inland concrete piers, deterioration of the conductive paint, albeit slow, can occur on any portion of the concrete that becomes wet intermittently, either by rainfall or drainage from the deck. Therefore, extra measures for avoiding this problem must be considered in the design of any CP system that uses the conductive paint as a secondary anode. Overall, the performance of the paint was better than expected, and its effectiveness can reasonably be expected to last for at least 15 years if minor deterioration is touched up as soon as possible. This type of conductive paint can, therefore, be considered a suitable secondary anode for use in CP of inland concrete piers.

Download or read book Cathodic protection for reinforced concrete bridge deck, Big Spring written by Phillip T. Nash and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five individual cathodic protection systems were installed on the U.S. 87 Missouri-Pacific Railroad overpass structure in Big Spring, Texas. The cathodic protection systems were installed in October 1988 as a demonstration project to compare the various systems. Three distributed anode types were used to protect the bridge deck: (1) titanium mesh; (2) conductive polymer; and (3) carbon strand. A hot-sprayed zinc conductive coating anode was applied to sidewalks and a median on the bridge deck, and a conductive paint anode was applied to a bridge bent. Performance data have been collected for each system since installation. The purpose of this study was to assess the performance of the five different cathodic protection systems installed on the Big Spring bridge.
