Book excerpt: Many quantitative studies have shown that there is gender disparity in higher education. In college music programs, for example, women make up just 32% of music faculty (Music Data Summaries 2017-2018, Chart 7), even though nearly half (48%) of graduates from music doctoral programs in the United States are women (Music Data Summaries 2017-2018, Chart 27). Women who are hired average lower salaries and are under-represented in the top academic ranks (Music Data Summaries 2017-2018; Toutkoushian, Bellas & Moore, 2007; Lee & Won, 2014; De Welde, 2017; Armenti, 2004). Gender disparity for women choral conductors has been less explored, particularly for women who conduct or have conducted in the Lutheran collegiate choral context. While quantitative studies can identify problems and show that women do not have equity in academia, qualitative studies can show what inequity looks like and feels like in individual women's lives. Narrative research, especially, is an important method for exploring the experiences of women who conduct in a variety of contexts. The purpose of this narrative study was to understand the stories and experiences of two women choral conductors who conduct or have conducted at Lutheran colleges with strong choral programs. Research questions included: What meanings do they find in their work? What are the challenges they face? How do they see their gender impacting their experiences? The two participants in this study share stories that show they are both excellent conductors and singers who have had highly successful careers. They are both caring and passionate teachers who share a desire to balance the head and the heart in music making. But their stories also show how differently they see their gender affecting their lives and their work. There are differences in the support they experienced in parenting and in how they perform their gender. Their stories of experience and the meanings they attach to them shed light on issues of gender and representation in the choral conducting field in a specific context and in a new way.

Theses choruses first emerged in the 1970s, and grew out of a very American tradition of (often gender-segregated) choral singing that explicitly presents itself as a community-based activity. By taking a close look at these choruses and their mission, Heather MacLachlan unpacks the fascinating historical and cultural dynamics behind groups that seek to change society for the better by encouraging acceptance of LGBT-identified people and promoting diversity more generally. She characterizes their mission as “integrationist rather than liberationist” and zeroes in on the inherent tension between GALA’s progressive social goals and the fact that the music most often performed by GALA groups is deeply rooted in a fairly narrowly conceived tradition of art music that identifies as white, Euro-centric, and middle class--and that much of the membership identifies as white and middle class as well. Pundits often wax eloquent about the power of music, asserting that it can, in some positive way, change the world. Such statements often rest on an unexamined claim that music can and does foster social justice. Indeed, Jerusalem has had an important role within the organization, and provides a valuable means within which to assess the organization's relationship with women's suffrage and the importance of rurality in the Women's Institute's identity. However, this book looks beyond Jerusalem by examining the full range of music making within the organization and locates its significance within a wider historical-cultural context. The Institute's promotion of conducting - a regular part of its musical activity since the 1930s - is discussed within the context of embodying overtly feminist sentiments. Lorna Gibson concludes that a redefinition of the term 'feminism' is needed and the concept of 'gendered spheres' of conducting provides a useful means of understanding the Institute's policy. The organization's promotion of folk song is also examined and reveals the Institute's contribution to the Folk Revival, as well as providing a valuable context within which to understand the National Federation's first music commission, Ralph Vaughan Williams's Folk Songs of the Four Seasons (1950). This work, and the Institute's second commission, Malcolm Williamson's The Brilliant and the Dark (1969), are examined with the context of the organization's music policy. In addition to discussing the background to the works, issues of critical reception are addressed. The book concludes with an Epilogue about the National Society Choir (later known as the Avalon Singers), which tested the organization's commitment to amateur music making. The book is the result of meticulous work undertaken in the archives of the National Federation, the BBC Written Archives Centre, the V&A archives, the Britten-Pears Library, the Ralph Vaughan Williams Library, the Women's Library and the Newspaper Library.

In choral music, there is a multitude of female elementary, middle, and high school directors working with choirs of all types, gender specific and mixed. However, the numbers change dramatically at the collegiate level, showing an absence of women conductors in positions of leadership despite doctoral programs consistently producing more female than male graduates. Collegiate men’s choirs have unique and storied traditions dating back to the Civil War era and the founding of many prominent colleges in the United States. The culture of these ensembles is founded around the concepts of fraternity, brotherhood, and a requisite number of drinking songs. The nature and history of these glee clubs has tended to limit access to women conductors. As gender stereotyping and biased hiring practices are challenged in the modern workforce, the choral profession needs to assert its support of women conducting any type of ensemble, to include those traditionally reserved for men. The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of female conductors of college men’s choirs. This research was guided by the following questions: How do women choral conductors describe their motivations for working with college men’s choirs? How do these conductors describe the rehearsal environment in their college men’s choir? And finally, how do these conductors define the challenges of working with male singers? The following areas provided focus for themes that emerged from the conductor interviews: their motivations, the rehearsal environment, and the challenges associated with a lack of opportunity and quality literature. These areas were also explored in the student interviews and used to provide additional context and perspective to each conductor’s case.
