The pandemic had a negative impact on academia, particularly for women and women of color in STEM disciplines. The current study is a qualitative exploration of identified issues of inequity and the effect the pandemic had on STEM women and women of color as they transitioned from working on university and college campuses to working remotely from home. The pandemic not only impacted the academic community but also had direct ramifications for qualitative researchers attempting to conduct research projects in the pandemic environment. This case study delves into the complexity of conducting qualitative research in a pandemic where the participants and the methods are heavily compromised by the necessary safety measures. This case study looks at the ideal state of conducting qualitative research on gender inequity for STEM women teaching faculty and researchers during the pandemic and contrasts that ideal state with the real state that threatened to derail the research process. Institutional Review Board safety measures are explained, and the necessary redesign of the project is detailed. Furthermore, data collection problems and solutions are offered. What is important to remember is that the pandemic environment posed problems for all researchers, and this environment was new to everyone. What was learned within the pandemic environment must be built upon for the advancement of research in a postpandemic world and in preparation should a similar event occur in the future.

Book excerpt: This case study examines the challenges and lessons encountered during a research process developed virtually, in which we adapted a quantitative study to a qualitative case in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Conducting research online presented both challenges and potential lessons that we were not aware of at the outset of our project. These reflections are based on six interviews with members of the research project. We learned that social aspects such as group dynamics, leadership, conflict resolution, trust-building, and communication are critical when undertaking qualitative research virtually. These compensate for the absence of some elements in face-to-face work, such as richer communication channels and broader forms of social interaction (formal and informal), as well as more agile ways of reconciling doubts, differences, or conflicts. In response to these challenges, careful consideration of the structure of the project and the technological tools used made it possible to support the virtual research to achieve its goals. We also conclude that adapting methods to similar studies is an interesting practice that needs to be done carefully.
