Book excerpt: Over the last decades the reliability, availability and safety of plants has become increasingly important for a number of reasons. One of the reasons is the increasing size and complexity of the plants, both onshore and offshore. The cost and safety risks have increased with the size, and the complexity has led to extensive automation. The human operator is not able to control the entire plant, nor able to assess its running condition, without the aid of this automation. However, the amount of data available to the operators is enormous. Many parameters, variables and alarms are available simultaneously for evaluation. Hence the need for automated evaluation of the data, or enhanced condition monitoring (sometimes incorrectly referred to as 'intelligent' condition monitoring). In 1992 the ICMOS (Intelligent Condition Monitoring Systems) research project was well underway for diesel engines used for propulsion and power generation onboard ships. Trying to extend this research and find other application for the results and experience led to research on condition monitoring for compression refrigeration plant, as these plants are often used and also often not well understood by the marine engineer. The initial, and necessarily very general, research assignment for this project was to generate knowledge required for the condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of compression refrigeration systems on board ships.

Book excerpt: This book comprises the selected contributions from the 2nd World Congress on Condition Monitoring (WCCM 2019), held in Singapore in December 2019. The contents focus on digitalisation for condition monitoring with the emergence of the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) and the Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT). The book covers latest research findings in the areas of condition monitoring, structural health monitoring, and non-destructive testing which are relevant for many sectors including aerospace, automotive, civil, oil and gas, marine, and manufacturing industries. Different monitoring systems and non-destructive testing methods are discussed to avoid failures, increase lifespans, and reduce maintenance costs of equipment and machinery. The broad scope of the contents will make this book interesting for academics and professionals working in the areas of non-destructive evaluation and condition monitoring.

Book excerpt: Although the most sophisticated fault diagnosis and condition monitoring systems have their origin in the aerospace and nuclear energy industries, their use is by no means restricted to such areas of 'high technology'. Modern machinery in most industrial plants is now so complex and expensive that mechanics find it increas ingly difficult to detect failure by, for instance, recognising changes in sound 'signatures', and few plants can afford the luxury of regular 'stripping down'. Increasingly, therefore, eady-warning devices are being employed in an effort to prevent catastrophic breakdown. This book provides the first co-ordinated compilation of fault diagnosis and con dition monitoring devices. It proceeds in three logical steps. The eady chapters deal with those conditions which contribute to deterioration and the consequent likely development of faults. The middle part of the book considers the various tech niques of monitoring and discusses the criteria for their selection in different situ ations. The final chapters provide a guide to the interpretation of the information signals deriving from monitoring, relating to reliability science and the mathematics of probability, and thus providing decision data on which management can act.

Book excerpt: The book covers various issues related to machinery condition monitoring, signal processing and conditioning, instrumentation and measurements, faults for induction motors failures, new trends in condition monitoring, and the fault identification process using motor currents electrical signature analysis. It aims to present a new non-invasive and non-intrusive condition monitoring system, which has the capability to detect various defects in induction motor at incipient stages within an arbitrary noise conditions. The performance of the developed system has been analyzed theoretically and experimentally under various loading conditions of the motor. Covers current and new approaches applied to fault diagnosis and condition monitoring. Integrates concepts and practical implementation of electrical signature analysis. Utilizes LabVIEW tool for condition monitoring problems. Incorporates real-world case studies. Paves way a technology potentially for prescriptive maintenance via IIoT.
