Book excerpt: Due to the variety of electric motor applications in critical service systems, they need precise control and accurate health monitoring in order to operate reliably and safely. Fault diagnosis, as the earliest step of system health management, identifies impending faults through pre-specified indexes. This is a critical process as it provides early warnings for catastrophic failures well beforehand and enables preventive maintenance schedule updates. The most important advance in this field is the implementation of fault diagnosis system embedded to drive system. In this technology, the health monitoring system is programmed in the main CPU used for controlling purposes. Also, there is no need to install any additional sensor since the same measurement used for control is sent for monitoring. This technology is growing up and still is not mature enough to be used in industries widely. In this study, rotor related faults such as magnet defect and eccentricity faults and their corresponding reflections on permanent magnet (PM) motor stator variables are investigated. An analytical approach based on a partitioned magnetic equivalent circuit is developed to determine the influence of rotor related faults on PM motor variables. Stator winding configuration, winding connection type and location of damaged rotor magnets are some of the physical properties affecting the fault signature characteristics. Several cases with different numbers of pole and slot are investigated through the proposed method. In addition, different winding connections (including star and delta connection), different winding configurations (including single and double layer, fractional and full coil pitch), and different magnet defect numbers and locations are scrutinized. The proposed tool significantly reduces the computational burden and provides sufficient accuracy which significantly eases to simulate several magnet fault scenarios and examine detailed topology dependencies in shorter times. At the last part of this research, a motor specific fault severity assessment method is proposed to calculate the amplitude of magnet defect fault signatures in the stator current and back-emf through machine and controller parameters of PMSM drive. A detailed mathematical analysis is developed based on the linear model of PMSM to predict the behavior of fault signatures in motor variables at various operating points. In order to understand and decouple the effects of motor controllers and operating points, the derivations are further extended to clarify the effects of current loop gains. Under the light of findings, the fault severity impact on the current and back-emf fault signatures is investigated exhaustively.

Book excerpt: Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) are widely used in various applications from home appliances to electric vehicles due to its advantages like high efficiency, high power density etc. The market share of this type of motor is increasing significantly in the recent decade. In order to ensure their reliable operation in safety critical system, condition monitoring tools are essential. The effective fault diagnosis and condition monitoring system reduces downtime and unplanned maintenance which saves both time and money. Though several motor attributes like current, vibration, temperature etc. can be used for diagnosis of health condition of an electric motor, stray magnetic flux around the motor housing has rich information about the health status of PM motors due to the use of high energy magnets. This dissertation presents condition monitoring techniques which are developed to address three major issues in PMSM. Stator fault is the most common electrical fault which begins as an inter-turn failure. It is essential to identify this failure at its initial stage to prevent the catastrophic damage caused by stator fault. It is shown that the fundamental component of stray magnetic flux may result in fault negative error under certain operating conditions. To overcome this problem, third harmonic component is analyzed comprehensively and proposed as a reliable fault metric throughout the entire range of operation to detect and locate the fault. Secondly, the common mechanical fault in electrical motors, bearing damage is studied. It is shown that the magnetic field of PM motors exhibit asymmetry due to the manufacturing imperfections of magnet. A stray magnetic flux-based bearing fault detection method is proposed by leveraging this asymmetry. The proposed method is analyzed extensively in both simulations and experiments. A comparative study between motor current based detection and the proposed method is also performed. In the last part of the research, a stray magnetic flux based the temperature estimation of permanent magnet is proposed. The stray magnetic flux around the motor can be correlated to the magnet temperature. However, it also is affected by the permeability variation of iron core and magnetic field generated by the stator current. A compensation co-efficient is proposed to compensate the mentioned effects and obtain the permanent magnet component of stray magnetic flux from the measured data. Then the proposed scheme is adopted to estimate the temperature of magnets online under dynamic operating conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together state-of-the-art advances in intelligent data analytics as driver of the future evolution of PaE systems. In the modern power and energy (PaE) domain, the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) and the consequent empowerment of consumers as a central and active solution to deal with the generation and development variability are driving the PaE system towards a historic paradigm shift. The small-scale, diversity, and especially the number of new players involved in the PaE system potentiate a significant growth of generated data. Moreover, advances in communication (between IoT devices and M2M: machine to machine, man to machine, etc.) and digitalization hugely increased the volume of data that results from PaE components, installations, and systems operation. This data is becoming more and more important for PaE systems operation, maintenance, planning, and scheduling with relevant impact on all involved entities, from producers, consumer,s and aggregators to market and system operators. However, although the PaE community is fully aware of the intrinsic value of those data, the methods to deal with it still necessitate substantial enhancements, development and research. Intelligent data analytics is thereby playing a fundamental role in this domain, by enabling stakeholders to expand their decision-making method and achieve the awareness on the PaE environment. The editors also included demonstrated codes for presented problems for better understanding for beginners.

Book excerpt: The need for efficiency, reliability and continuous operation has lead over the years to the development of fault-tolerant electrical drives for various industrial purposes and for transport applications. Permanent-magnet synchronous machines have also been gaining interest due to their high torque-to-mass ratio and high efficiency, which make them a very good candidate to reduce the weight and volume of the equipment. In this work, a multidisciplinary approach for the design of fault-tolerant permanent-magnet synchronous machine drives is presented. The first chapter introduces the electrical drive and its components. An analysis of the failures and key elements to quantify the reliability are given. A general drive model for multi-phase machines is described in chapter 2, whereas the control aspects are addressed in chapter 3. Chapter 4 is dedicated to fault detection and isolation, which is the basis used for fault-tolerant control (chapter 5). Some design considerations are exposed in the sixth chapter. Finally, conclusions and future works are proposed in the last chapter of this treatise.

For example, the PMSM is widely used in robotics, machine tools, actuators, and it is being considered in high-power applications such as industrial drives and vehicular propulsion. It is also used for residential/commercial applications. The PMSM is known for having low torque ripple, superior dynamic performance, high efficiency and high power density. Section 1 deals with the introduction of PMSM and how it is evolved from synchronous motors. Section 2 briefly discusses about the types of PMSM. Section 3 tells about the assumptions in PMSM for modeling of PMSM and it derives the equivalent circuit of PMSM. In Section 4, permanent magnet synchronous motor drive system is briefly discussed with explanation of each blocks in the systems. Section 5 reveals about the control techniques of PMSM like scalar control, vector control and simulation of PMSM driven by field-oriented control using fuzzy logic control with space vector modulation for minimizing torque ripples. PMSM control with and without rotor position sensors along with different control techniques for controlling various parameters of PMSM for different applications is presented in Section 6.
