Book excerpt: Multiphase Heat transfer is ubiquitous in diverse fields of application such as cooling systems, micro and mini power systems and many chemical processes. By now, single phase dynamics are mostly understood in their applications in vast fields, however multiphase systems especially involving phase changes are still a challenge. Present study aims to enhance understanding in this domain especially in the field of condensation heat transfer. Of special relevance to present studies is study of condensation phenomenon for detection of airborne nanoparticles using heterogeneous nucleation. Detection of particulate matter in the environment via heterogeneous condensation is based on the droplet growth phenomenon where seeding particles in presence of supersaturated vapor undergo condensation on their surface and amplify in size to micrometric ranges, thereby making them optically visible. Previous investigations show that condensation is a molecular exchange process affected by mean free path of vapor molecules ([lambda]) in conjunction with size of condensing droplet (d), which is measured in terms of Knudsen number (Kn=[lambda]/d). In an event involving heterogeneous nucleation with favorable thermodynamic conditions for condensation to take place, the droplet growth process begins with accretion of vapor molecules on a surface through random molecular collision (Kn>1) until diffusive forces start dominating the mass transport process (Kn“1). Knowledge of droplet growth thus requires understanding of mass transport in both of these regimes. Present study aims to understand the dynamics of the Microthermofluidic sensor which has been developed, based on above mentioned fundamentals. Using continuum approach, numerical modeling was carried to understand the effect of various system parameters for improving the device performance to produce conditions which can lead to conditions abetting condensational growth. The study reveals that the minimum size of nanoparticle which can be detected is critically dependent upon controlling wall geometry and size, wall temperature, flow rate and relative humidity of nanoparticle laden air stream. Droplet growths rates and sizes have been predicted based on different models. The efficacy of the device under various conditions has been measured in terms of its ability to activate nanoparticles of different sizes. Since the condensation mechanism is dependent upon the Knudsen regime in which droplets are growing via condensation, special consideration was made to understand their behavior in large Knudsen number conditions. For this purpose, ESEM was used to study condensation on a bare surface. Droplet growth obtained as a function of time reveals that the rate of growth decreases as the droplet increases in size. The experimental results obtained from these experiments were matched with theoretical description provided by a model based on framework of kinetic theory. Evidence was also found which establishes the presence of submicroscopic droplets nucleating and growing in between microscopic droplets for partially wetting case.

Book excerpt: Approximate, explicit solutions to the simultaneous heat and mass transfer equations governing the growth of spherical droplets by condensation in a quiescent, supersaturated vapor have been obtained. Free molecule flow conditions are assumed. The temperature and growth rate of droplets under the 'near thermal equilibrium' and 'near saturation' conditions are given as explicit functions of the thermodynamic state of the gaseous phase and the droplet size only. The 'near saturation', and 'near equilibrium' conditions are satisfied in the practical cases of droplets growing in a pure vapor, and a dilute mixture of a vapor with a noncondensing carrier gas, respectively. The accuracy of the approximation formulas is quite satisfactory; for the typical conditions tested, the maximum error is a few percent.

Book excerpt: This book is an expanded form of the monograph, Dropwise Condensation on Inclined Textured Surfaces, Springer, 2013, published earlier by the authors, wherein a mathematical model for dropwise condensation of pure vapor over inclined textured surfaces was presented, followed by simulations and comparison with experiments. The model factored in several details of the overall quasi-cyclic process but approximated those at the scale of individual drops. In the last five years, drop level dynamics over hydrophobic surfaces have been extensively studied. These results can now be incorporated in the dropwise condensation model. Dropwise condensation is an efficient route to heat transfer and is often encountered in major power generation applications. Drops are also formed during condensation in distillation devices that work with diverse fluids ranging from water to liquid metals. Design of such equipment requires careful understanding of the condensation cycle, starting from the birth of nuclei, followed by molecular clusters, direct growth of droplets, their coalescence, all the way to instability and fall-off of condensed drops. The model described here considers these individual steps of the condensation cycle. Additional discussions include drop shape determination under static conditions, a fundamental study of drop spreading in sessile and pendant configurations, and the details of the drop coalescence phenomena. These are subsequently incorporated in the condensation model and their consequences are examined. As the mathematical model is spread over multiple scales of length and time, a parallelization approach to simulation is presented. Special topics include three-phase contact line modeling, surface preparation techniques, fundamentals of evaporation and evaporation rates of a single liquid drop, and measurement of heat transfer coefficient during large-scale condensation of water vapor. We hope that this significantly expanded text meets the expectations of design engineers, analysts, and researchers working in areas related to phase-change phenomena and heat transfer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaporation and Droplet Growth in Gaseous Media deals with the evaporation of droplets of liquid in gaseous media and the reverse process of droplet growth in a medium supersaturated with the vapor of the liquid. Thediscussion is restricted to the kinetics of evaporation and growth of droplets of pure liquids (and heat transfer to the same). Comprised of three chapters, this book first examines the quasi-stationary evaporation and growth of droplets that are motionless relative to the medium and the hydrodynamic factor is absent. The Maxwell equation, the basis of the theory of evaporation of droplets in a gaseous medium, is taken into account. The influence of the Stefan flow and the concentration change at the surface on the rate of evaporation are considered, along with the evaporation of droplets in a vessel with absorbing walls and the fall in temperature of both free evaporating droplets and supported evaporating droplets. The second chapter is devoted to the quasi-stationary evaporation of droplets in a stream of gas, that is, droplets moving relative to the medium. The last chapter focuses on non-stationary evaporation and growth of droplets that either motionless or moving relative to the medium. This monograph will be of interest to students, practitioners, and researchers in inorganic and structural chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preliminary experimental results of forced convection condensation of steam inside a horizontal microtube are reported. The stainless steel microtube has a diameter of 250 micrometers and a length of 48 mm. The inlet saturated vapor Reynolds number ranges from 390 to 4,700 and the average inlet saturated vapor velocities range from 33 to 276 m/s. The mean subcooled temperature varies from 12 to 25 deg C. The two-phase pressure drop ranges from near zero to 65 kPa. The vapor quality at the inlet and outlet are 100% and 24 to 94%, respectively. The experimental average Nusselt numbers are compared to those from stratified condensation flow and annular condensation flow in macrotubes found in the literature. The experimental average Nusselt numbers are: (1) 3 to 50 times smaller than the macrotube values, (2) do not depend on the inlet saturated vapor Reynolds number or velocity, and (3) increase nearly linearly with the increase in the change of vapor quality from the inlet to the outlet. The significant deviation from macroscale theory observed may be due to different condensation mechanisms caused by the relatively large droplet sizes relative to the inside diameter of the microtube. The two-phase pressure drop should include the contribution of surface tension.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of thermal and diffusion limitations on growth rates and temperature history of small droplets are analyzed for a supersaturated vapor in an inert carrier gas. The growth rates are determined for the cases of constant field conditions, and changing fluid conditions due to vapor deposition on droplets. The analysis is so formulated as to describe the growth process as the droplet size increases from microscopic (free-molecular) to macroscopic (continuum). For the constant field case, closed-form solutions are obtained for the droplet temperature and growth as functions of time by expressing approximately the saturation pressure of the condensing vapor as a linear function of the temperature within moderate temperature ranges. An analysis is also made of the droplet growth and temperature increase in a changing environment. The change is caused by the depletion of the vapor concentration as a result of condensation on the droplets. Equations involving conservations of mass and energy are solved, incorporating thermal and diffusion limitations, the droplet concentration and the fluid temperature change due to liberation of the heat of condensation. Book excerpt: Analytical studies have been made of laminar film condensation on a horizontal elliptical cylinder in a pure saturated vapor under conditions of free and forced convection. Estimation of interfacial shear stress was made in two ways: the first involving an asymptotic value of the shear stress under conditions of infinite condensation rate and the second based on simultaneously solving the two-phase vapor boundary layer and condensate equations. The latter approach enables the determination of the vapor boundary layer separation point. For the assumption of asymptotic shear stress, effects of surface tension and pressure gradient in the condensate film have been included. At the extremes of eccentricity, corresponding to a circular tube and a vertical plate, the results are compared with theoretical and experimental work of others. Improvement in the condensation heat transfer coefficient was found for elliptical tubes under both free and forced convection conditions when compared to circular tubes of the same surface area. In the latter case, this improvement was due mainly to the reduced drag of the elliptical tube providing a higher vapor velocity for the same pressure drop as that across a circular tube ... Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CLIFFORD K. HOAND STEPHEN W. WEBB Sandia National Laboratories, P. O. Box 5800, Albuquerque, NM 87185, USA Gas and vapor transport in porous media occur in a number of important applications includingdryingofindustrialandfoodproducts,oilandgasexploration,environm- tal remediation of contaminated sites, and carbon sequestration. Understanding the fundamental mechanisms and processes of gas and vapor transport in porous media allows models to be used to evaluate and optimize the performance and design of these systems. In this book, gas and vapor are distinguished by their available states at stan- ? dard temperature and pressure (20 C, 101 kPa). If the gas-phase constituent can also exist as a liquid phase at standard temperature and pressure (e. g. , water, ethanol, toluene, trichlorothylene), it is considered a vapor. If the gas-phase constituent is non-condensable at standard temperature and pressure (e. g. , oxygen, carbon di- ide, helium, hydrogen, propane), it is considered a gas. The distinction is important because different processes affect the transport and behavior of gases and vapors in porous media. For example, mechanisms specific to vapors include vapor-pressure lowering and enhanced vapor diffusion, which are caused by the presence of a g- phase constituent interacting with its liquid phase in an unsaturated porous media. In addition, the “heat-pipe” exploits isothermal latent heat exchange during evaporation and condensation to effectively transfer heat in designed and natural systems.
