Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to determine the concurrent validity of Curriculum- Based Measurement Reading (CBM-R) and the Qualitative Reading Inventory- Third Edition (QRI-3) for students in grades 3-5 attending a rural inland northwest elementary school and the predictive validity of CBM-R and QRI-3 for Washington Assessment of Student Learning Reading subtest (WASL Reading) performance for Grade 4 students in this same school. Results indicated that CBM-R and QRI-3 similarly classified students as Frustrational, Instructional, or Independent grade level readers for Grade 3 and 4 students, but not Grade 5. Pass status on CBM-R and QRI-3 was predictive of WASL Reading Pass status, with the QRI-3 the more accurate predictor. Fail status on both measures was a poor predictor of WASL Reading fail status"--Document.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curriculum-based measurement (CBM) is a fast, reliable, and valid set of procedures for measuring student progress in basic skills. However, the predictive validity of math computations and applications probes administered three times across the year (fall, winter, and spring) has not been compared to the TerraNova standardized assessment, nor has CBM's acceptability from corrective education teachers serving students out of the classroom been explored. In this study, nine corrective education teachers working in a large mid-Atlantic urban school district and providing corrective education services to private and parochial schools participated by administering math computations and concepts and applications CBM probes to second and/or third grade students three times. There were 453 second grade students in 19 nonpublic schools and 371 third grade students in 16 nonpublic schools who completed three computations and applications CBM probes at three different points in the year. Of these students, 133 second grade students in 13 parochial schools as well as 108 third grade students in 12 parochial schools completed the TerraNova math assessment. Through the use of multiple regression analyses, it was determined that the concepts and applications probes had significant levels of predictive validity while the computations probes were not found to have any predictive validity when compared to the Normal Curve Equivalent of the Total Math subtests. The nine corrective education teachers also completed three versions of the Assessment Rating Profile-15 (ARP-15), one prior to the use of CBM and two following its use. No significant difference was identified when comparing the results of the first rating scale with either of the second or when comparing the two different rating scales administered at the end of the year. Overall, the concepts and applications probes were found to be significantly predictive of performance on the TerraNova, Second Edition, Total Math subtests, despite the fact that the teachers did not indicate a strong like or dislike towards the use of CBM tools.

Book excerpt: Recent legislation such as No Child Left Behind and the Performance Evaluation Reform Act (PERA) increasingly pressure teachers and schools to be accountable for instructional time in the form of improved test scores. As a result, students are given an increasing variety of assessments in a given school year in an attempt to measure academic growth over time. These assessments frequently occur in the form of curriculum-based measures (CBM) of oral reading fluency, informal reading inventories (IRIs), computer adaptive tests (CATs) of reading, and annual high stakes assessments of reading ability. While a review of the literature reveals a well-established relationship between CBMs, IRIs, and high stakes assessments, less empirical evidence exists that illustrates the relationship between and technical adequacy of CBMs, IRIs, and CATs of reading ability. Specifically, the current study examined the concurrent and predictive validity of CBMs and IRIs on computer adaptive assessments in students in second through fifth grade. Further, given the increasing diversity of student populations, the current study sought to examine the extent to which one's status as an English Learner or student with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) moderates the relationships between oral reading fluency and CATs and IRIs and CATs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Journal of Evidence-Based Practices for Schools is a leader in publishing research-to-practice articles for educators and school psychologists. The mission of this journal is to positively influence the daily practice of school-based professionals through studies demonstrating successful research-based practices in educational settings. As a result, the editors are committed to publishing articles with an eye toward improving student performance and outcomes by advancing psychological and educational practices in the schools. They seek articles using non-technical language that (1) outline an evidence-based practice, (2) describe the literature supporting the effectiveness and theoretical underpinnings of the practice, (3) describe the findings of a study in which the practice was implemented in an educational setting, and (4) provide readers with information they need to implement the practice in their own schools in a section entitled Implementation Guidelines. The Journal of Evidence-Based Practices for Schools differs from other scholarly journals in that it features articles that demonstrate empirically-based procedures for readers to apply the practice in their setting.

Book excerpt: This study examines the relationship between local Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) scores and later academic performance. It adds school-based validity evidence to the body of research literature that has demonstrated CBM to be valid and reliable for a number of assessment purposes. CBM reading and written expression scores for 678 Grade 6 and 7 students were compared to their year-end English and Social Studies marks received in Grades 8, 9 and 10. Correlational and regression analyses confirmed the predictive validity of CBM scores. Data on the academic programming of the students in secondary school allowed for discriminant analysis procedures that demonstrated the ability of CBM to differentiate between student groups of various proficiency levels. Overall, findings support the appropriateness of the use of CBM norms for local assessment applications, including the use of CBM as an indicator of academic performance when making special education eligibility decisions.

Book excerpt: Developed specifically to overcome problems with traditional standardized instruments, curriculum-based measurement (CBM) has steadily increased in educational use. These brief assessment probes of reading, spelling, written expression, and mathematics serve to quantify student performance as well as to enhance academic achievement. Their widening use as a means of evaluation and ultimately of instruction, has created a corresponding need to expand the applications of this methodology to diverse populations. This new volume addresses that need by focusing on the broader application of CBM, providing practical new measures, as well as detailing their use with specific student groups.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to examine if assessments that are aligned to the same standards have a predictive nature. It seeks to answer whether or not scores on formative assessments that are directly related to the curriculum being taught can predict student achievement on state standardized assessments. A total of 142 students' scores on curriculum-based assessments and state standardized assessments were considered in the investigation. Correlations between the two may offer a glimpse into the predictability of formative assessment to their counterparts when the curriculum and instruction are appropriately aligned to both. A correlation analysis was used to analyze the relationship between averages of students' scores on curriculum-based assessment and the scores achieved on their state assessment. Additionally, a hierarchical regression analysis was used to determine the level of predictive validity associated with curriculum-based assessments to summative assessments when controlling for demographic variables. The study revealed that a strong relationship does exist between student scores on unit assessments and state assessments. Data focused on identifying variables with the most predictive value when controlling for demographics of the student population. Results from hierarchical regression analysis indicated that student achievement on curriculum-based assessments is highly predictive to results on summative assessments especially when alignment between curriculum, instruction, and assessments. This study is limited in scope but could be expanded to include additional grade levels, school years, and districts with varying levels of curriculum implementation.
