Book excerpt: This book studies the relationship between automata and monadic second-order logic, focusing on classes of automata that describe the concurrent behavior of distributed systems. It provides a unifying theory of communicating automata and their logical properties. Based on Hanf's Theorem and Thomas's graph acceptors, it develops a result that allows characterization of many popular models of distributed computation in terms of the existential fragment of monadic second-order logic.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of FORTE 2003, the 23rd IFIP TC 6/ WG 6.1 International Conference on Formal Techniques for Networked and D- tributed Systems, held in Berlin, Germany, September 29–October 2, 2003. FORTE denotes a series of international working conferences on formal descr- tion techniques (FDTs) applied to computer networks and distributed systems. The conference series started in 1981 under the name PSTV. In 1988 a s- ond series under the name FORTE was set up. Both series were united to FORTE/PSTV in 1996. Two years ago the conference name was changed to its current form. The last ?ve meetings of this long conference series were held in Paris, France (1998), Beijing, China (1999), Pisa, Italy (2000), Cheju Island, Korea (2001), and Houston, USA (2002). The 23rd FORTE conference was especially dedicated to the application of formal description techniques to practice, especially in the Internet and c- munication domain. The scope of the papers presented at FORTE 2003 covered the application of formal techniques, timed automata, FDT-based design, v- i?cation and testing of communication systems and distributed systems, and the veri?cation of security protocols. In addition, work-in-progress papers were presented which have been published in a separate volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ICGT 2002 was the ?rst International Conference on Graph Transformation following a series of six international workshops on graph grammars with - plications in computer science, held in Bad Honnef (1978), Osnabruc ̈ k (1982), Warrenton (1986), Bremen (1990), Williamsburg (1994), and Paderborn (1998). ICGT 2002 was held in Barcelona (Spain), October 7–12, 2002 under the a- pices of the European Association of Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS), the European Association of Software Science and Technology (EASST), and the IFIP Working Group 1.3, Foundations of Systems Speci?cation. The scope of the conference concerned graphical structures of various kinds (like graphs, diagrams, visual sentences and others) that are useful to describe complex structures and systems in a direct and intuitive way. These structures are often augmented by formalisms which add to the static description a further dimension, allowing for the modeling of the evolution of systems via all kinds of transformations of such graphical structures. The ?eld of Graph Transformation is concerned with the theory, applications, and implementation issues of such formalisms. The theory is strongly related to areas such as graph theory and graph - gorithms, formal language and parsing theory, the theory of concurrent and distributed systems, formal speci?cation and veri?cation, logic, and semantics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, like the symposium CSP25 which gave rise to it, commemorates the semi-jubilee of Communicating Sequential Processes. 1 Tony Hoare’s paper “Communicating Sequential Processes” is today widely regarded as one of the most in?uential papers in computer science. To comm- orate it, an event was organized under the auspices of BCS-FACS (the British Computer Society’s Formal Aspects of Computing Science specialist group). CSP25 was one of a series of such events organized to highlight the use of formal methods, emphasize their relevance to modern computing and promote their wider application. BCS-FACS is proud that Tony Hoare presented his original ideas on CSP at one of its ?rst meetings, in 1978. The two-day event, 7–8 July 2004, was hosted by London South Bank U- versity’s Institute for Computing Research, Faculty of Business, Computing and Information Management. The intention was to celebrate, re?ect upon and look beyondthe?rstquarter-centuryofCSP’scontributionstocomputerscience. The meeting examined the impact of CSP on many areas stretching from semantics (mathematical models for understanding concurrency and communications) and logic(forreasoningaboutbehavior),throughthedesignofparallelprogramming languages (i/o, parallelism, synchronization and threads) to applications va- ing from distributed software and parallel computing to information security, Web services and concurrent hardware circuits. It included a panel discussion with panelists Brookes, Hoare, de Roever and Roscoe (chaired by Je? Sanders), poster presentations by PhD students and others, featured a ?re alarm (requ- ing evacuation in the rain!) and concluded with the presentation of a fountain pen to Prof. Sir C. A. R. Hoare.

Book excerpt: This book helps readers easily learn basic model checking by presenting examples, exercises and case studies. The toolset mCRL2 provides a language to specify the behaviour of distributed systems, in particular where there is concurrency with inter-process communication. This language allows us to analyse a distributed system with respect to its functional requirements. For example, biological cells, supply chain management systems, patient support platforms, and communication protocols. The underlying technique is based on verifying requirements through model checking. The book explains the syntax of mCRL2 and offers modelling tips and tricks.

CAV 2003 was the 15th in a series of conferences dedicated to the advancement of the t- ory and practice of computer-assisted formalanalysis methods for hardwareand softwaresystems. Theconferencecoversthe spectrum from theoreticalresultsto applications, with emphasis on practical veri?cation tools, including algorithms andtechniquesneededfortheirimplementation.Theconferencehastraditionally drawn contributions from researchers as well as practitioners in both academia and industry. The program of the conference consisted of 32 regular papers, selected from 87 submissions. In addition, the CAV programfeatured 9 tool presentationsand demonstrations selected from 15 submissions. Each submission receivedan av- age of 5 referee reviews. The largenumber of tool submissions and presentations testi?es to the liveliness of the ?eld and to its applied ?avor. The CAV 2003 program included a tutorial day with three invited tuto- als by Ken McMillan (Cadence) on SAT-Based Methods for Unbounded Model Checking, Doron Peled (Warwick) on Algorithmic Testing Methods, and Willem Visser (NASA) on Model Checking Programs with Java PathFinder. Book excerpt: This book presents 15 tutorial lectures by leading researchers given at the 11th edition of the International School on Formal Methods for the Design of Computer, Communication and Software Systems, SFM 2011, held in Bertinoro, Italy, in June 2011. SFM 2011 was devoted to formal methods for eternal networked software systems and covered several topics including formal foundations for the inter-operability of software systems, application-layer and middleware-layer dynamic connector synthesis, interaction behavior monitoring and learning, and quality assurance of connected systems. The school was held in collaboration with the researchers of the EU-funded projects CONNECT and ETERNALS. The papers are organized into six parts: (i) architecture and interoperability, (ii) formal foundations for connectors, (iii) connector synthesis, (iv) learning and monitoring, (v) dependability assurance, and (vi) trustworthy eternal systems via evolving software.

This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The master thesis of Susanne Göbel generates the deep understanding of the Mobile Ambient (MA) calculus that is necessary to use it as a modeling language. Instead of calculus terms a much more convenient representation via MA trees naturally maps to the application area of networks where processes pass hierarchical protection domains like firewalls. The work analyses MA’s function principles and derives a translation into Safe Petri nets. It extends to arbitrary MA processes but finiteness of the net and therefore decidability of reachability is only guaranteed for bounded processes. The construction is polynomial in process size and bounds so that reachability analysis is only PSPACE-complete.
