This puts highway construction contractors under intense pressure to minimize traffic disruptions and construction cost. Actively promoted by the Federal Highway Administration, there are hundreds of accelerated bridge construction (ABC) construction programs in the United States, Europe and Japan. Accelerated Bridge Construction: Best Practices and Techniques provides a wide range of construction techniques, processes and technologies designed to maximize bridge construction or reconstruction operations while minimizing project delays and community disruption. Describes design methods for accelerated bridge substructure construction; reducing foundation construction time and methods by using pile bents Explains applications to steel bridges, temporary bridges in place of detours using quick erection and demolition Covers design-build systems' boon to ABC; development of software; use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) Includes applications to glulam and sawn lumber bridges, precast concrete bridges, precast joints details; use of lightweight aggregate concrete, aluminum and high-performance steel

Book excerpt: A relatively new type of beam falling under the accelerated bridge construction (ABC) umbrella, the Northeast Extreme Tee (NEXT) D beam, was designed by the PCI Northeast Bridge Technical Committee, with connection details that substitute traditional welded ties joining butted-beam systems, such as bulb-tee girders and double-tee beams. Grout has traditionally been used in joints between prefabricated bridge elements and systems (PBES). This material, however, has resulted in issues with shear key cracking reported by the Federal Highway Administration. An alternative cementitious material, ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), has been used as a great solution for connections between PBES in ABC. This material exhibits superior properties such as compressive, tensile, and bond strength, durability, and long-term stability when compared to conventional connection materials. Three main studies are presented herein. The first study presents a tensile strength evaluation of 54 UHPC specimens by comparing the direct tension (DT), four-point bending, and double-edge wedge-splitting (DEWS) test methods. No statistically significant difference was found between the peak tensile strengths obtained from DT and DEWS specimens. DEWS specimens are tested using a compression-testing machine, and can be cored and finished from existing UHPC members. The second study evaluates the bond-slip behavior of UHPC and untensioned prestressing strands. The variables studied in the 54 tested pull-out specimens include clear cover, embedment length, and strand diameter (dPT). It was observed that specimens that experienced strand failure had an embedment length of at least 24×dPT or clear cover distance of 2.17×dPT. The third study investigates the behavior of NEXT D beams under fatigue loading. Four double-tee and four slab specimens were subjected to 1 million cycles under AASHTO standard wheel truck loads. Moreover, finite element analyses (FEAs) were performed, effectively simulating the tested specimens, and a 60-ft. long bridge model was created to simulate a constructed bridge in Mobile County, Alabama. It was observed that an 8-in. (203-mm) wide UHPC joint with a single reinforcement layer containing straight #5 bars, an 8-in. (203-mm) embedment length, and spaced every 6 in. (152 mm) had satisfactory performance according to results from experimental testing and FEAs.

Book excerpt: Funded by the National Science Foundation through the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) research program, a major multi-university research project has been in progress at the University of Nevada, Reno. This study describes the study of one of the three large-scale bridge models that were tested to failure on three shake tables system. This model was supported on fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite piers implementing accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques. The bridge was a quarter scale model of a 4-span bridge with continuous reinforced concrete superstructure and a drop cap, two-column pier design. Each pier utilized different unconventional FRP details. The purpose of using these innovative details was to improve the seismic performance of the bridge. The first pier consisted of cast-in-place concrete-filled glass FRP tubes with ±55 degree fibers. The second pier consisted of two segmental reinforced concrete columns wrapped with layers of unidirectional carbon FRP sheets to provide confinement and shear reinforcement. Only nominal hoops were used to hold the longitudinal reinforcement, as FRP jacket and tube were sufficient in providing confinement and shear required reinforcement. The third pier had the same configuration as that of pier 1 but the columns and footing were precast. The top connections in piers 1 and 3 consisted of pipe-pin joints to facilitate ABC and provide hinge behavior. The objectives of the study presented in this document were to evaluate the biaxial seismic performance of this bridge system incorporating composite piers, investigate the performance of each detail and compared them to each other and to conventional ones, determine the influence of abutment-superstructure interaction on the response, assess the performance of a bridge model incorporating ABC techniques, evaluate sufficiency of analytical modeling of the performance of composite material and details, and to conduct parametric study of different variations of the bridge model to study the effect of several important factors such as near-fault earthquake effects and the variations in the configuration of the bridge model. large-scale 4-span bridge model was designed, constructed, and subjected to simulated earthquake loading on three shake tables. The simulated shake table motions were the modified 1994 Northridge, CA ground motion recorded in Century City and were applied to the bridge model in ten runs with increasing amplitudes. Over 380 channels of data were collected. Compared to conventional reinforced concrete bridges, experimental results showed superior performance under extreme seismic loading even under lateral drift ratios exceeding 9%. Extensive post-test analytical studies were conducted and it was determined that a computational model of the bridge that included bridge-abutment interaction using OpenSees was able to provide satisfactory estimations of key structural response parameters such as superstructure displacements. The analytical model was also used to conduct parametric studies on response of the bridge model and its variations under near-fault excitations. The effects of changing the column section properties were also explored. It was found that concrete-filled FRP tube piers and CFRP wrapped post-tensioned segmental piers reduce residual displacements compared to their conventional reinforced concrete counter parts even under impulsive near-fault motions.

Book excerpt: Prefabricated components of a bridge produced off-site can be assembled quickly, and can reduce design time and cost, minimizing forming, minimize lane closure time and/or possibly eliminate the need for a temporary bridge. This document has been developed to promote the use of prefabricated elements and systems in bridges and focuses on 'Connection Details' as part of accelerated construction projects. Accelerated Bridge Construction is one of the prime focus areas of the Office of Infrastructure of Federal Highway Administration. It focuses on a need to create awareness, inform, educate, train, assist and entice State DOTs and their staff in the use of rapid construction techniques. This document represents the State of the Practice at this time with respect to connections between prefabricated elements in accelerated bridge construction projects. Most of the details were obtained from State Departments of Transportation, industry organizations, and private consultants. This information contained herein should be used to develop designs and determine which details would be appropriate for accelerating bridge construction projects.
