Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Fort Caswell, North Carolina Fort Caswell, the remains of which you can see as you drive through the North Carolina Baptist Assembly at Southport, North Carolina, has a simple but interesting history. When it was first built, Fort Caswell was one of the best constructed forts in the United States and guarded the entrance to the Cape Fear River and thus to the Port of Wilmington. However, Fort Caswell never played what might be called a glorious role in any military conflict. It is even reasonably safe to say that there has never been a life lost at Fort Caswell due to enemy fire even though the fort changed hands four times in the Civil War era. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The James Sprunt Historical Publications, Vol. 11: Published Under the Direction of the North Carolina Historical Society The early settlers of the New England Colonies belonged to the great middle class of Old England and came chie y from the towns, while the early colonists of Virginia, purely English, belonging to the upper and middle classes of the mother country came in the main from the rural districts, and brought with them a large body of servants, who were Sprung from the very lowest classes of England. This approach to white slavery in Virginia was abandoned with the introduction of negroes, but the poor whites then occupied a condition of life scarcely preferable to that of the slave. '1 he result was that in Virginia the upper class grasped the reins of government at the start and held them, While in New England, on the contrary, the mass of the people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Correspondence of Henry Laurens, of South Carolina Henry Laurens, a portion of whose correspondence will be found in this volume, was a native of Charleston, South Carolina, at which place he was born in the year 1723. His early life was devoted to mercantile pursuits, in which he gained much applause for his scrupulous attention to business. At the commencement of the revolutionary difficulties he was resident in Europe, where he used his utmost exertions to stay the violence of the ministerial party, and prevent the war; but finding that unconditional submission on the part of the colonists was the only method by which harmony could be effected, he returned to Carolina, determined to join his fortunes with those of his fellow-countrymen. Book excerpt: A fishing village that started its life as Fort Johnston, the town changed its name to Smithville, and then Southport, as it is known today, read the town's long and watery history. Southport is a small seaside village whose rich history began as early as 1754, when Fort Johnston was built. In 1792, it was incorporated as the town of Smithville, but in 1887, with their busy fishing village growing, the citizens decided to rename it Southport in hopes it would bring a port to their town. Much to their disappointment, however, the port was located in Wilmington. In 1954, Hurricane Hazel made landfall, and the storm surge delivered to Southport was the greatest in North Carolina's recorded history. Like most seaside villages, Southport recovered and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places today. Observing Independence Day since 1795, Southport annually hosts the official North Carolina Fourth of July celebration.
