A radon calibration system is being developed and studied that dispenses custom and reproducible activities of radon from a radon generator source into a vessel for sensor testing and calibration. There are two methods by which radon can be dispensed into the vessel. The flow-through method allows for radon to be pumped at a constant activity and flow rate through the chamber, with concentrations ranging from 1.7 pCi/l to 34 pCi/l. The vacuum method injects a predefined concentration of radon into the chamber, starting from 85 pCi/l. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages. To accurately detect alpha particles emitted by radon and its progeny, a portable alpha particle detector using a silicon PIN photodiode is being developed. The current lab system setup using a $10 Hamamatsu photodiode yields a 1.82% channel resolution using polonium-210 as an alpha source. A detector with sufficient energy resolution is needed to resolve individual alpha peaks in an energy spectrum produced by various radionuclides present in air. Background radiation experiments have shown that the detector exhibits an excellent signal-to-noise ratio. Lab counting experiments have shown the experimental activity is in reasonable agreement with the calculated radiation incident on the photodiode. Current circuit development includes a charge sensitive preamplifier, and the remaining goal is to add a pulse counting chain to complete the circuit and the portable alpha particle counter. In the future, it is planned to extensively calibrate the alpha particle detector with the radon calibration system.

Book excerpt: Radon is a radioactive noble gas produced from the U-235, U-238, and Th-232 decay chains, and it is emanated from the ground and soil containing the aforementioned primordial nuclides by means of fluid transport. It constitutes a lung cancer risk as its properties allow it to be easily inhaled. The inhaled radon decays into solid-charged radioactive daughters, which readily attach to lung tissue and are not easily removed, inducing a radiation dose that increases the risk of cancer. Therefore, affordable, accessible, and accurate radon detectors for the public are a topic of great importance. All radiation detectors require some calibration as the radiation may not fully deposit its energy due to energy losses in material or in ambient air (especially for alphas), bremsstrahlung production (for betas), or Compton scattering (for gammas). Therefore, the detection peak may not correspond to the original energy of the particle. In the case of radon detectors, a calibration chamber that can calibrate for alphas emitted by the radon and its progeny without being affected by the average indoor environment is essential. This study investigates different radon detector calibration systems and elaborates on a selected setup for which computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to determine the best placement of a silicon PIN photodiode detector. The setup is described and the CFD modeling, meshing, and physics simulations are expanded upon. The results of the CFD simulations display a flow vortex, while the shape of the vortex depends on the flow rate. The simulation results also help determine where to place the detector for each flow rate considered. Further improvements have been suggested for the simulations and the experimental setup, which includes testing different brands of silicon PIN photodiodes, emulating environmental factors, and applying control theory for circuit optimization, assessing whether components used are contaminated with radon or its parent radionuclides (therefore acting as a radon and radon progeny source itself), and suggestions for possible final design improvements.

Abstract: The goal of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is to determine the last unknown neutrino mixing angle θ13, in sin22θ13 to sensitivity better than 0.01 at 90% confidential level in three years of running. In order to reach the goal, background from natural radiation should be controlled less than 50 Hz, accordingly radon, which is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas, is one of the factors need to be monitored. A High-sensitivity and High-reliability Hong Kong (H3) radon monitoring system is developed to support the slow control system of the experiment. It achieves the sensitivity requirement and fulfills the data acquisition specification by using an enlarged sample chamber, an improved electronic and a designed software, in addition to the dehumidifier system for long term use. Four final products of the radon detector were well calibrated and tested before application; the sensitivities of counted progenies Po-218 and Po-214 are 3.65 0.37 x10-2 cpm/Bq-m3 (C.F.is 27.42.7 Bq/m3/cpm) and 3.94 0.40 x10-2 cpm/Bq-m3 (C.F. is 25.42.5 Bq/m3/cpm). Its performance is the highest among the same type of commercial available products. This radon monitoring system has been successfully taking data as the background measurement of the experiment for more than half a year, and will continue to provide useful information for the following several years. From the results, the radon levels in the air in Experimental Halls and in the water of water systems were higher than expected, but still at the acceptable levels. Further works have to be done to control them at preferred levels. DOI: 10.5353/th_b5053415 Subjects: Radon measures

Book excerpt: In this chapter, an irradiation radon system was explained in detail. This system is based on soil gas as a natural radon source. The radon system was used to determine both the calibration factor of the radon detector and the equilibrium factor between radon and its short-lived daughters. Also, the calibration factor has been calculated theoretically and experimentally. The effect of humidity upon the calibration factor has been investigated. The diffusion of radon through polyethylene membrane has been determined using new nuclear method. This method depends upon the physical decay of radon.
Book Synopsis Radon Measurements By Etched Track Detectors - Applications In Radiation Protection, Earth Sciences by : Saeed A Durrani

This book was released on 1997-06-09 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exposure to radon gas, which is present in the environment naturally, constitutes over half the radiation dose received by the general public annually. At present, the most widely used method of measuring radon concentration levels throughout the world, both in dwellings and in the field, is by etched track detectors — also known as Solid State Nuclear Detectors (SSNTDs). Although this is not only the most widely used method but is also the simplest and the cheapest, yet there is at present no book available on the market globally, devoted exclusively or largely to the methodology of, and dealing with the results obtained by, the SSNTD technique. The present book fills this important gap in the coverage of radon measurements. Individual chapters of the book are contributed by some of the most prominent and active research workers in the world in the SSNTD discipline as well as in the field of radon measurements. A detailed breakdown of the contents of the book is shown below together with the name(s) of the author(s) of each chapter.
Book Synopsis WHO Handbook on Indoor Radon by : World Health Organization
Download or read book WHO Handbook on Indoor Radon written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2009 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook focuses on residential radon exposure from a public health point of view and provides detailed recommendations on reducing health risks from radon and sound policy options for preventing and mitigating radon exposure. The material in the handbook reflects the epidemiological evidence that indoor radon exposure is responsible for a substantial number of lung cancers in the general population. Information is provided on the selection of devices to measure radon levels and on procedures for the reliable measurement of these levels. Discussed also are control options for radon in new dwellings, radon reduction in existing dwellings as well as assessment of the costs and benefits of different radon prevention and remedial actions. Also covered are radon risk communication strategies and organization of national radon programs.--Publisher's description.
