Book excerpt: Les travaux menés au cours de cette thèse ont pour objectif d'étudier l'applicabilité du procédé d'ozonation catalytique TOCCATA® au traitement avancé d'eaux résiduaires urbaines pour le contrôle des émissions en micropolluants. Ce travail couvre la détermination des propriétés physico-chimiques, structurelles et de réactivité de deux catalyseurs et l'optimisation de leur conditionnement pour le procédé d'ozonation catalytique. La caractérisation hydrodynamique du réacteur à co-courant ascendant triphasique en lit fixe utilisé pour la mise en œuvre du procédé a été également réalisée. Les processus élémentaires impliqués dans le procédé ont ensuite été étudiés séparément : transfert gaz-liquide, adsorption, ozonation simple et interaction ozone/matériau. Enfin l'ozonation catalytique a été étudiée vis-à-vis de l'élimination de la matière organique des eaux usées réelles. L'ozonation catalytique se montre moins sélective que l'ozonation simple et améliore le procédé en termes de transfert d'ozone et d'élimination du carbone organique. Des mécanismes et des lois cinétiques pour chacun des processus élémentaires ont été déterminés et une loi de vitesse globale de premier ordre pour le procédé d'ozonation catalytique est proposée. L'étude de l'influence de différentes variables opératoires a été effectuée en vue de l'optimisation du procédé. L'investigation a ensuite été élargie à l'élimination de micropolluants spécifiques (carbamazépine, diuron, kétoprofène, diclofénac, naphtalène) appliquée à des eaux synthétiques, ainsi qu'à des eaux résiduaires urbaines réelles. La plupart des composés sont dégradés après application d'une faible dose d'ozone par le procédé. L'étude de leurs propriétés et de leur affinité avec le système d'ozonation catalytique a permis d'expliquer leurs comportements.

Book excerpt: In a context of growing water scarcity, wastewater reclamation or reuse has been increasingly recognized as an alternative source of water supply. However, trace micropollutants are not removed effectively by conventional treatment technologies in the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). To ensure safe reuse of municipal wastewater, it is necessary and important to establish advanced technologies such as reverse osmosis (RO) process and ozonation to reduce these non-desirable compounds to an acceptable level. In addition, a large fraction of trace micropollutants mainly referring to pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in the municipal wastewater mainly originate from urine wastewater. Separation and treatment of urine at source not only provides an opportunity for urine valorisation by recovering N/P nutrients but also reduces the micropollutant load in the municipal wastewater.The objective of the present thesis is to assess the potential of the RO process and of ozonation for the emerging PhACs removal from two different types of wastewaters (municipal membrane bioreactor (MBR) permeate and urine wastewater). The performance of the RO process for MBR permeate was first examined in terms of RO membrane fouling and retention capacity for the target PhACs and for common water quality parameters. A combination of struvite precipitation, RO and ozonation was then investigated for urine valorisation with respect to P recovery and PhACs removal.The results exhibited an excellent retention capacity of the RO membrane for the constituents present in the MBR permeate, >80% for dissolved organic carbon (NPOC) and conductivity, and >90% for target PhACs. However, high rejection of the RO membrane meant that almost all the organic and inorganic substances were accumulated in the RO concentrate. In order to minimize the environmental effect of RO concentrate, ozonation of RO concentrate and the recirculation of RO concentrate to the MBR as a part of MBR influents were studied.The RO membrane in MBR-RO system still maintains a relatively stable and effective retention capacity for the global water quality parameters. However, after RO concentrate recycling, the fouling propensity of the RO membrane was enhanced in terms of RO permeate flux decline, which was mainly due to an increase of the osmotic pressure of retained ions at the RO membrane surface. In addition, ozonation was a feasible solution to manage RO concentrate. 0.8 mg consumed O3 per mg NPOC could achieve a >90% removal for the tested PhACs.With respect to the treatment of urine wastewater, struvite precipitation was successful in recovering P nutrients from the urine solutions. However, most of the target PhACs still remained in the urine effluents after the struvite precipitation and ozonation was applied for their removal. As compared to the ozonation of saline solution with ions and synthetic urine (containing ions and ammonia), a higher ozone dose was required to remove the same quantity of target PhACs from real urine solutions (containing ions, ammonia and organic matters), mainly due to the competitive reactions of salts, ammonia and organic matters with molecular ozone. In addition, the real urine containing a higher load of organic matters seemed to favour the degradation of PhACs with a second-order constant the reaction with ozone (kO3-PhACs) below 10 L mol-1 s-1.
