L'objectif premier des constructeurs automobiles est de tester l'interaction véhicule-conducteur afin d'évaluer l'impact sur la conduite de nouveaux dispositifs intégrés au véhicule et les réactions de ces dispositifs aux différentes manœuvres du conducteur. Pendant la conduite d'un véhicule automobile ou d’un deux-roues motorisé, les sources d'informations qui permettent au conducteur de suivre une piste donnée et de contrôler son véhicule sont variées. L'objectif de la simulation de conduite est donc de fournir une illusion de mouvement propre, en cohérence avec les informations réelles, sur un véhicule entièrement virtuel, à l'exception des organes de commande (guidon, accélérateur, frein, etc.). Cette illusion est un phénomène complexe qui met en jeu les capteurs proprioceptifs de l'être humain, et notamment les systèmes visuel, kinesthésique et vestibulaire.

The idea to organize a conference on land battle systemmodelswas first suggested to me in 1g72 by Andreas Mortensen, then a member of the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment and presently at the SHAPE Technical Centre, when we discussed the apparent inconsistencies of various evaluations of force capability within NATO. Frequently, decision makers are confronted by contradictory results of different studies addressing essentially the same problern leaving them with the impression that the tools of systems analysis and operations research may not be very objective guides. However, experienced systems researchers know that a detailed comparison of models, their assumptions and inputs, would generally show that results are not really contradictory. But not only seem the decision processes in large national and international organizations tobe suchthat a comparison can hardly ever be accomplished, also the docu mentation available is rarely sufficient to really camprehend the differences in results. For these reasons, we felt that an effort to review the state of the art of model ing in support of force capabil ity assessments was overdue.

Can we fight poverty and inequality while protecting the environment? The challenges are obvious. To rise out of poverty is to consume more resources, almost by definition. And many measures to combat pollution lead to job losses and higher prices that mainly hurt the poor. In Unsustainable Inequalities, economist Lucas Chancel confronts these difficulties head-on, arguing that the goals of social justice and a greener world can be compatible, but that progress requires substantial changes in public policy. Chancel begins by reviewing the problems. Human actions have put the natural world under unprecedented pressure. The poor are least to blame but suffer the most—forced to live with pollutants that the polluters themselves pay to avoid. But Chancel shows that policy pioneers worldwide are charting a way forward. Building on their success, governments and other large-scale organizations must start by doing much more simply to measure and map environmental inequalities. We need to break down the walls between traditional social policy and environmental protection—making sure, for example, that the poor benefit most from carbon taxes.
