Book Synopsis Wetland and Riparian Areas of the Intermountain West by : Mark C. McKinstry
Download or read book Wetland and Riparian Areas of the Intermountain West written by Mark C. McKinstry and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetlands and riparian areas between the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada are incredibly diverse and valuable habitats. More than 80 percent of the wildlife species in this intermountain region depend on these wetlands—which account for less than 2 percent of the land area—for their survival. At the same time, the wetlands also serve the water needs of ranchers and farmers, recreationists, vacation communities, and cities. It is no exaggeration to call water the "liquid gold" of the West, and the burgeoning human demands on this scarce resource make it imperative to understand and properly manage the wetlands and riverine areas of the Intermountain West. This book offers land managers, biologists, and research scientists a state-of-the-art survey of the ecology and management practices of wetland and riparian areas in the Intermountain West. Twelve articles examine such diverse issues as laws and regulations affecting these habitats, the unique physiographic features of the region, the importance of wetlands and riparian areas to fish, wildlife, and livestock, the ecological function of these areas, their value to humans, and the methods to evaluate these habitats. The authors also address the human impacts on the land from urban and suburban development, mining, grazing, energy extraction, recreation, water diversions, and timber harvesting and suggest ways to mitigate such impacts.

This book was released on 1999-03-15 with total page 1122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetlands are crucial ecosystems that help filter a great number of toxicants out of the earth's waters. They must be managed and occasionally even built from scratch, including all of the flora and fauna that grows there. Invertebrates play a key role in the wetland food chain. This comprehensive resource is the first dedicated solely to the ecology and management of invertebrates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Wetland Habitats of North America is essential reading for everyone who studies, manages, or visits North American wetlands. It fills an important void in the wetland literature, providing accessible and succinct descriptions of all of the continent’s major wetland types.” Arnold van der Valk, Iowa State University “Batzer and Baldwin have compiled the most comprehensive compendium of North American wetland habitats and their ecology that is presently available—a must for wetland scientists and managers.” Irving A. Mendelssohn, Louisiana State University "If you want to gain a broad understanding of the ecology of North America’s diverse wetlands, Wetland Habitats of North America is the book for you. Darold Batzer and Andrew Baldwin have assembled an impressive group of regional wetland scientists who have produced a virtual encyclopedia to the continent’s wetlands. Reading the book is like a road trip across the Americas with guided tours of major wetland types by local experts. Your first stop will be to coastal wetlands with eight chapters covering tidal wetlands along the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coasts. Then you’ll travel inland where you can visit any or all of 18 types ranging from bottomland swamps of the Southeast to pothole marshes of the Northern Prairies to montane wetlands of the Rockies to tropical swamps of Central America and desert springs wetlands. All in one book—I’m impressed! Every wetlander should add this book to her or his swampland library. Ralph Tiner, University of Massachusetts–Amherst

This book was released on 2001 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I investigated the feasibility of using sightability models to estimate and correct visibility bias in waterfowl brood surveys. Visibility bias is an important source of error in brood surveys, but most surveys do not account for imperfect detection or sightability covariates. I used 93 radio-marked mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) broods and a point-count method to develop predictive sightability models and assess the relative importance of sightability covariates. Mean brood visibility was 24%, but detection rates ranged from 13 to 51% depending on year and scale of application. Brood visibility was negatively correlated with percent visual obstruction and brood age. Observer experience, ambient temperature, and wind speed also influenced detection probabilty, but effects were less important than percent visual obstruction or brood age. Brood visibility was not strongly correlated with wetland-basin characteristics (e.g., size, shape, and percent surveyed). Brood and survey-area charact.
