Book excerpt: Quando parliamo di comunicazione, parliamo di un’attività indispensabile per qualsiasi livello di sviluppo sociale. Secondo l’antico e nobile assioma per il quale “non si può non comunicare”, le attività comunicative sono imprescindibili dalla nostra volontà, e necessarie in ogni momento della nostra esistenza per la regolazione delle attività sociali, fisiche, culturali. In questo senso, la cultura è comunicazione e la comunicazione è cultura: poiché la cultura sopravvive se è comunicata (al proprio gruppo culturale e al pubblico, nonchè nella dimensione privata) e si trasmette attraverso pratiche comunicative tra gli attori sociali. Dunque, la comunicazione è in qualche modo cultura, poiché la cultura no può vivere senza essere comunicata e trasmessa, e proprio all’interno di questo processo si viene continuamente a ridefinire. La comunicazione interculturale ha un ruolo centrale nell’era contemporanea, soprattutto rispetto a due fenomeni oggi centrali: l’utilizzo pervasivo dei social network; la compresenza di differenti gruppi etnici, linguistici e sociali nello stesso spazio fisico: il multiculturalismo. La comunicazione è inevitabile. Ogni individuo possiede una propria prospettiva sul mondo, costruita a partire dalle proprie caratteristiche, esperienze, relazioni e influenze, ed altrettanto inevitabilmente individui diversi si relazionano tra loro. Lo scarto fra prospettive diverse si traduce in un necessario margine di opacità dell’altro, che viene amplificato (e radicalizzato nella sua potenziale conflittualità) anche dalla sua appartenenza a un’altra cultura. Il mondo contemporaneo registra, fra gli effetti del processo di globalizzazione, la produzione di una sempre maggiore contiguità (fisica o mediata) fra culture diverse (prossimità a distanza). La comunicazione (già di per sé inevitabile) assume pertanto necessariamente carattere interculturale.

Book excerpt: Italy is Out is the fruit of the collaboration between Mario Badagliacca, the established documentary photographer, and the research team of ‘Transnationalizing Modern Languages: Mobility, Identity and Translation in Modern Italian Cultures’ (2014-16). This ARHC-funded project explored the implications of Italian migration in a global perspective tracing cultural transformations across borders, generations, and language. Badagliacca visited some of the project’s key locations conducting interviews with Italians or people of Italian descent before photographing them in familiar locations. The subjects of the portraits were invited to bring along three objects representing their attachment to Italy. The sheer variety of the objects which appear alongside the portraits suggest the diversity of the migrant experience. Photographs shot in London, New York, and Buenos Aires feature members of the historical Italian community, but also first generation migrants in search of opportunities not offered at home. A similar complexity emerges, more unexpectedly, in the postcolonial Italian communities of Tunis and Addis Abeba. The photographs are accompanied by essays written by members of the research team and people who have in some way participated in the project. Fiction, autobiography and academic reflection sit side by side adding to Badagliacca’s multifaceted exploration of Italians abroad.
