Book excerpt: CHEP (Computing in High Energy Physics) is the largest international meeting of the communities of High Energy Physics, Computing Science and the Computing Industry. The sixth conference in this series was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in September 1995. The focus of the conference was “Computing for the next Millennium”. High Energy Physics is at a point where major changes in the way data acquisition and computing problems are addressed will be called for in the high energy physics programs of the year 2000 and beyond. The conference covered a wide spectrum of topics including Data Access, Storage, and Analysis; Data Acquisition and Triggering; Worldwide Collaboration and Networking; Tools, Languages, and Software Development Environments; and special purpose processing systems. The papers presented both recent progress and radical approaches to computing problems as candidates for the basis of future computing in the field of high energy physics.

Download or read book Instrumentation In High Energy Physics written by Fabio Sauli and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992-06-16 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains topical papers covering the various aspects of instrumentation in high energy physics. The subjects of the contributions, all previously unpublished, have been chosen to provide an overview of the fundamental processes and of the technological problems encountered in detecting, tracking and identifying charged and neutral particles in modern particle physics experiments. Each contribution offers a concise but complete description of the state-of-the-art regarding the subject, and is addressed to post-doctoral and research staff readers; it will also be found useful as a teaching aid for students and participants in specialized schools and workshops on intermediate and high energy experimental physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born after World War II, large-scale experimental high-energy physics (HEP) has found itself limited ever since by available accelerator, detector and computing technologies. Accordingly, HEP has made significant contributions to the development of these fields, more often than not driving their innovations. The invention of the World Wide Web at CERN is merely the best-known example out of many. This book is the first comprehensive account to trace the history of this pioneering spirit in the field of computing technologies. It covers everything up to and including the present-day handling of the huge demands imposed upon grid and distributed computing by full-scale LHC operations—operations which have for years involved many thousands of collaborating members worldwide and accordingly provide the original and natural testbed for grid computing concepts. This book takes the reader on a guided tour encompassing all relevant topics, including programming languages, software engineering, large databases, the Web, and grid- and cloud computing. The important issue of intellectual property regulations for distributed software engineering and computing is also addressed. Aptly, the book closes with a visionary chapter of what may lie ahead. Approachable and requiring only basic understanding of physics and computer sciences, this book is intended for both education and research.

Download or read book Introduction to High Energy Physics written by Donald H. Perkins and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-13 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly-regarded text provides a comprehensive introduction to modern particle physics. Extensively rewritten and updated, this 4th edition includes developments in elementary particle physics, as well as its connections with cosmology and astrophysics. As in previous editions, the balance between experiment and theory is continually emphasised. The stress is on the phenomenological approach and basic theoretical concepts rather than rigorous mathematical detail. Short descriptions are given of some of the key experiments in the field, and how they have influenced our thinking. Although most of the material is presented in the context of the Standard Model of quarks and leptons, the shortcomings of this model and new physics beyond its compass (such as supersymmetry, neutrino mass and oscillations, GUTs and superstrings) are also discussed. The text includes many problems and a detailed and annotated further reading list.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to Quantum Computing for High Energy Physics by : Davide Livio Provasoli
Download or read book An Introduction to Quantum Computing for High Energy Physics written by Davide Livio Provasoli and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applications of quantum computing to high energy physics (HEP) is a relatively new field of research. As such, the relevant literature is not well organized in one place and a clear road-map for people approaching the field is not currently available. Addressing this issue was the main motivation for this article, which is intended a pedagogical introduction to the field and specifically to our research direction, i.e. application of quantum computing to parton shower event generators, with the hope of more people becoming interested in exploring this path. Our paper on the subject, "A quantum algorithm for high energy physics simulations" [8], is the subject of chapter 4. I hope this article can provide a direct path for people familiar with quantum mechanics and quantum field theory to start reading papers or conducting research in this area of quantum computing applications in HEP. In this regard, the quantum algorithm we present in Chapter 4, can serve as an example of development of a novel efficient quantum algorithm to solve a problem in a particle physics model.

Book excerpt: I present a very personalized journey through more than three decades of computing for experimental high-energy physics, pointing out the enduring lessons that I learned. This is followed by a vision of how the computing environment will evolve in the coming ten years and the technical challenges that this will bring. I then address the scale and cost of high-energy physics software and examine the many current and future challenges, particularly those of management, funding and software-lifecycle management. Lastly, I describe recent developments aimed at improving the overall coherence of high-energy physics software.
