Book excerpt: This proceedings volume consists of papers presented at the Seventh International Workshop on Computer-Aided Scheduling of Pllblic Transport, which was held at th th the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from August 5 to 8 , 1997. In the tradition of alternating Workshops between North American and Europe - Chicago (1975), Leeds (1980), Montreal (1983), Hamburg (1986), Montreal (1990), and Lisbon (1993), Cambridge (Massachusetts, USA) was selected for the Workshop in 1997. As in earlier workshops, the central theme dealt with vehicle and crew scheduling problems and the development of software systems incorporating operations research techniques for operational planning in public transport. However, following the trend that started in Hamburg in 1987, the scope of this Workshop was broadened to include topics in related fields. Two trends underlie this. First, the recognition that the core scheduling issues in public transport have important common elements with other application areas in which extensive work is also underway, and that it is vital to learn from these other initiatives. Second, while scheduling is indeed a core problem in public transport planning, and has shown the first and greatest benefits from computer application, it is intimately related to the preceding tasks in the planning hierarchy, such as service design, and the following tasks such as operations control and public information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers in management, industrial engineering, operations, and computer science have intensely studied scheduling for more than 50 years, resulting in an astounding body of knowledge in this field. Handbook of Scheduling: Algorithms, Models, and Performance Analysis, the first handbook on scheduling, provides full coverage of the most recent and advanced topics on the subject. It assembles researchers from all relevant disciplines in order to facilitate cross-fertilization and create new scheduling insights. The book comprises six major parts, each of which breaks down into smaller chapters: · Part I introduces materials and notation, with tutorials on complexity theory and algorithms for the minimization of makespan, total completion time, dual objectives, maximum lateness, the number of late jobs, and total tardiness. · Part II is devoted to classical scheduling problems. · Part III explores scheduling models that originate in computer science, operations research, and management science. · Part IV examines scheduling problems that arise in real-time systems, focusing on meeting hard deadline constraints while maximizing machine utilization. · Part V discusses stochastic scheduling and queueing networks, highlighting jobs that are not deterministic. · Part VI covers applications, discussing scheduling problems in airline, process, and transportation industries, as well as in hospitals and educational institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In latter years, energy efficiency has become a crucial concern for every transportation mode, but it is in electrified railways where energy savings have shown a bigger potential due to (i) regenerative braking, that allows converting kinetic energy into electric power, and (ii) vehicle interconnection, that allows other trains to use regenerated power. Power supply and energy management will continue to develop in the future. This book gathers under a single cover several papers published in the Computer on Railways series (IX, X and XI) and focuses on power supply and energy management. Some of the discussed themes are: modelling, simulation and optimisation of AC and DC infrastructure, analysis of rolling stock consumption, and innovative approaches in power supply operation. This book will be invaluable to management consultants, engineers, planners, designers, manufacturers, operators and IT specialists who need to keep abreast of the latest developments in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comparative examination of planning paradigms This text begins with the principle that the ability to anticipateand plan is an essential feature of intelligent systems, whetherhuman or machine. It further assumes that better planning resultsin greater achievements. With these principles as a foundation,Planning in Intelligent Systems provides readers with the toolsneeded to better understand the process of planning and to becomebetter planners themselves. The text is divided into two parts: * Part One, "Theoretical," discusses the predominant schools ofthought in planning: psychology and cognitive science, organizational science, computer science, mathematics, artificialintelligence, and systems theory. In particular, the book examinescommonalities and differences among the goals, methods, andtechniques of these various approaches to planning. The result is abetter understanding of the process of planning through thecross-fertilization of ideas. Each chapter contains a shortintroduction that sets forth the interrelationships of that chapterto the main ideas featured in the other chapters. * Part Two, "Practical," features six chapters that center on acase study of The Netherlands Railways. Readers learn to applytheory to a real-world situation and discoverhow expanding theirrepertoire of planning methods can help solve seemingly intractableproblems. All chapters have been contributed by leading experts in thevarious schools of planning and carefully edited to ensure aconsistent high standard throughout. This book is designed to not only expand the range of planningtools used, but also to enable readers to use them moreeffectively. It challenges readers to look at new approaches andlearn from new schools of thought. Planning in Intelligent Systemsdelivers effective planning approaches for researchers, professors, students, and practitioners in artificial intelligence, computerscience, cognitive psychology, and mathematics, as well as industryplanners and managers.
