Book Synopsis Levels of Fire Protection for Sustainable Forestry in Ontario by : David Leigh Martell
Download or read book Levels of Fire Protection for Sustainable Forestry in Ontario written by David Leigh Martell and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1997 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a brief historical overview of forest fire management in Ontario, this paper discusses several potentially useful levels of protection measures. It describes a hypothetical forest which is used to illustrate how very simple fire management subsystems can interact to produce complex system behaviour that is sometimes difficult to understand and manage. An overview of the basic principles of fire economics, planning under uncertainty, and traditional approaches to level-of-protection planning provides an analytical foundation for fire management planning. An integrated fire/forest management framework that can be enhanced and used for level-of-protection planning in Ontario is then presented. Finally, several important issues that should be addressed when assessing Ontario's level of fire protection needs are briefly discussed.

Download or read book Fire on Earth written by Andrew C. Scott and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earth is the only planet known to have fire. The reason is both simple and profound: fire exists because Earth is the only planet to possess life as we know it. Fire is an expression of life on Earth and an index of life’s history. Few processes are as integral, unique, or ancient. Fire on Earth puts fire in its rightful place as an integral part of the study of geology, biology, human history, physics, and global chemistry. Fire is ubiquitous in various forms throughout Earth, and belongs as part of formal inquiries about our world. In recent years fire literature has multiplied exponentially; dedicated journals exist and half a dozen international conferences are held annually. A host of formal sciences, or programs announcing interdisciplinary intentions, are willing to consider fire. Wildfire also appears routinely in media reporting. This full-colour text, containing over 250 illustrations of fire in all contexts, is designed to provide a synthesis of contemporary thinking; bringing together the most powerful concepts and disciplinary voices to examine, in an international setting, why planetary fire exists, how it works, and why it looks the way it does today. Students, lecturers, researchers and professionals interested in the physical, ecological and historical characteristics of fire will find this book, and accompanying web-based material, essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in all related disciplines, for general interest and for providing an interdisciplinary foundation for further study. A comprehensive approach to the history, behaviour and ecological effects of fire on earth Timely introduction to this important subject, with relevance for global climate change, biodiversity loss and the evolution of human culture. Provides a foundation for the interdisciplinary field of Fire Research Authored by an international team of leading experts in the field Associated website provides additional resources

This book was released on 1992 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canadian Forest Fire Behavior Prediction (FBP) System is a subsystem of the larger Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System, which also includes the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index (FWI) System. The FBP system provides quantitative estimates of head fire spread rate, fuel consumption, fire intensity and fire description and gives estimates of fire area, perimeter, perimeter growth rate and flank and back fire behaviour. This report describes the structure and content of the system and its use with forest fire characteristics.

Book Synopsis Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape by : Ajith H. Perera
Download or read book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape written by Ajith H. Perera and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing popularity of the broad, landscape-scale approach to forest management represents a dramatic shift from the traditional, stand-based focus on timber production. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape responds to the increasing need of forest policy developers, planners, and managers for an integrated, comprehensive perspective on ecological landscapes. The book examines the "big picture" of ecological patterns and processes through a case study of the vast managed forest region in Ontario. The contributors synthesize current landscape ecological knowledge of this area and look at gaps and future research directions from several points of view: spatial patterns, ecological functions and processes, natural disturbances, and ecological responses to disturbance. They also discuss the integration of landscape ecological knowledge into policies of forest management policies, particularly with respect to Ontario's legislative goals of forest sustainability. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape is the first book to describe the landscape ecology of a continuously forested landscape in a comprehensive manner. It is written for instructors and students in forest management, wildlife ecology, and landscape ecology, and for forest managers, planners, and policy developers in North America.
