Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Didactics - Computer Science, grade: B, University of Zambia, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the Computer Studies Curriculum implementation in rural secondary schools of Zambia’s Mufumbwe district. This study was guided by the following questions: What facilities and equipment are available for the implementation of the Computer Studies Curriculum in selected secondary schools of Mufumbwe district? Are there enough qualified teachers to enhance the effective implementation of the Computer Studies Curriculum? How appropriate are the teaching methodologies in the implementation of the Computer Studies Curriculum? What are the head teachers’, teachers’, learners’ and parents’ views on the teaching of Computer Studies? Globalisation and technological development in the world have accelerated and created a new global economy fuelled by information and driven by innovations. One way in which information spreads is by the use of computers. In the 2013 revised curriculum, the Ministry of General Education in Zambia introduced Computer Studies into the education system. The few studies in this area were done in urban areas. The rural setting has been ignored as regards to implementation of Computer Studies Curriculum. Mufumbwe district being a rural setting is a special case especially in a Zambian context considering development trends in Zambia. Specifically, the study sought to establish the availability of facilities and equipment for the implementation of Computer Studies, find out the availability of qualified Computer Studies teachers, examine the appropriateness of teaching methods and establish the views of Head Teachers, teachers, learners and parents on the implementation of Computer Studies in Secondary Schools in Mufumbwe district. Lack of computer skills among learners in Zambia may hinder technological advancement and fail to achieve the national ICT policy goal of 2007 which introduced CS as an enabler in a diversified and export-oriented economy, capable to improve livelihoods and protect the vulnerable through service delivery and provide an efficient and effective public sector. Further, Zambia may fail to achieve the vision 2030 whose vision is to have a prosperous middle-income nation through having a technologically proficient, fully able to adapt, innovate and invest using its human and natural resources. It was therefore important that this study was conducted in order to investigate how CSC was being implemented in rural secondary schools in Mufumbwe district.

Specifically, the paper explores the insights of the policy and its feasibility in terms of implementation issues and strategies vital to its successful implementation. The paper further validates the realization of the policy in contrast to its implementation being viewed as a mere political rhetoric. The paper emphasizes that policy by itself cannot solve a specific public problem not until it is practically implemented. The paper agrees with the notion that decentralization is indeed a step forward for Zambia. The paper concludes that the Government’s commitment to implement the decentralization policy as a priority still remains to be seen just how practically the commitment was to be translated into reality or it could just also be another political rhetoric.

Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Sociology - Children and Youth, , course: Diploma in Social Work, language: English, abstract: Although considerable attention has been paid to the prevalence of adolescence childbearing in Kenya today, few studies have focused on the educational consequences of the schoolgirl pregnancy. Using data collected in selected schools in Embu Municipality, this study examines the factors associated with schoolgirl pregnancy as well as the likelihood of school dropout and subsequent re‐enrollment of schoolgirls who become pregnant. The analysis is derived from the data collected from secondary schoolgirls, education officials and teachers on factors that predispose girls to pregnancy, the extent to which teenage pregnancy contributes to school dropout and the eventual levels of re‐admission. The data analysis shows that girls in secondary schools are actually already sexually active though they lack the relevant information to help them make the right choices as far as their sexuality is concerned. The little information that they have is not conclusive and it is evident that they yearn for information which would be useful for them. Policy on re‐admission has been formulated but the extent to which it is applied is still a questionable issue. A lot of gaps also exist in record keeping of the girls who become pregnant while in school and what becomes of them when they dropout. Such records would be vital in determining for sure if these girls become pregnant before dropping out of school or otherwise and subsequently tracking them down for re‐admission purposes. A question is then raised on what other factors would be causing these girls to drop out of school other than just the pregnancy. However, poverty, cultural practices and peer pressure are among the factors assumed to be predisposing girls to pregnancy from the findings of this study, while these factors in themselves would also cause dropouts. Given the increasing levels of female school participation in Kenya today through the affirmative action motion targeting the girl child, the findings of this study suggest that future studies will benefit from exploring the causal relationships between the factors mentioned above, adolescent reproductive health behavior and subsequent school attendance.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2,0, University of Wuppertal (Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: Cultural Studies on a Shoestring, language: English, abstract: Due to its importance in foreign language learning in German schools the subject of English carries the main responsibility to develop the students' competence for intercultural communication (cf. Göbel/Hesse). Accordingly, the KMK classifies intercultural learning as a key element of English language teaching and includes intercultural competence in the educational standards for grades 9 and 10 (cf. KMK 2003 & KMK 2004). Intercultural competence is described as contextual socio-cultural knowledge, the ability to deal with cultural difference sympathetically and the ability to master situations of intercultural contact (cf. KMK 2003: 8; cf. KMK 2004: 8). Including the cognitive and the affective level as well as the level of action alike, this description reflects the complexity of intercultural competence. The affective as well as the level of action are of particular importance if the teaching of culture is to be more than the teaching of facts as it was practised by the Landeskunde approach (cf. Nünning/Nünning). New approaches for an action- and product-oriented teaching of English are supported by empirical studies about intercultural sensitivity, which stress the relevance of emotions in situations of intercultural contact (cf. Göbel/Hesse). However, an analysis of the curricula of the German states shows that the main focus is on objectives of the cognitive dimension whereas learning aims of the affective level and the level of action are included less often (cf. ibid.). Moreover, many curricula lack information about which contents to use for teaching general aims like empathy, overcoming ethnocentrism and respect for cultural differences (cf. ibid.). Hence, the curricula are not sufficient for arranging a successful teachin

The participants of the study were the 233 Grade 12 students who were enrolled during the second semester of the school year 2017-2018. The quantitative descriptive design was utilized to determine the extent of application of ESP in the EAPP curriculum. The results revealed a high extent of application of ESP in the EAPP curriculum for Grade 12 students, however, when they were grouped according to each strand, HE and HUMSS were of the very high extent while GAS, IA, and AFA were of the high extent. Meanwhile, when the strands were categorized to Content Standard (CS), ABM and HE were of the very high extent while HUMSS, GAS, IA, and AFA were of the high extent of application. Also, when the strands are categorized according to Performance Standard (PS), HUMSS and HE were of the very high extent while GAS, IA, and AFA were of the high extent. There were significant differences found among the strands and standards in the extent of application of ESP in the EAPP curriculum. Hence, the proposed training program for ESP is designed to enrich the knowledge and learning materials for the senior high school students and the English teachers based on the findings of the study.

The main purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between study habits and academic performance of senior secondary school students in Mathematics. To carry out this study, four research questions and one null hypothesis were raised to guide the study. The population of 1128 Senior Secondary School Two (SS2) students with a sample size of 200 respondents was selected from 5 public secondary schools for the study using simple random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was used to gather data for the study, which consists of two sections (A and B), section A consist of 20 items while section B, consist of 30 achievement tests on mathematics. The reliability coefficient of 0.72 was obtained using Split Half Method. Data collected was analyzed using simple frequency counts, percentages and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient (PPMC) and the hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance using One-Way Analysis of Variance(ANOVA). However, the results revealed that there is significant relationship between study habits and academic performance of senior secondary school students in mathematics. Based on the result of the findings, it was recommended that group guidance should be organized in schools by professional counsellors in order to create awareness on how students can develop effective study habits which could lead to good academic performance in mathematics and a functional school library should be mounted in all the secondary schools.

School effectiveness refers to the extent to which schools are able to accomplish their pre-determined objectives. School effectiveness transcends beyond students passing final examinations. According to School effectiveness has become an area of major concern for educational research from the sixties onwards in the United States. These studies have tended to focus on secondary school effectiveness till 1980. We aimed at studying a variety of effectiveness criteria. As in some other effectiveness studies, we explicitly studied not only student achievement, but also noncognitive outcomes. The mathematics and the language achievement was measured by means of curriculum relevant multiple choice tests at the start of the secondary school and at the end of the first, the second, the fourth, and the sixth grade. The questionnaire with regard to the noncognitive outcomes was also administered several times during the students' secondary school career.
