Book excerpt: Structural Analysis Systems: Software—Hardware Capability—Compatibility—Applications, Volume 3 is a practical guidebook on structural analysis systems and their applications. It provides detailed information about a specific software, its postprocessor capabilities and limitations, computer-aided design connection, and compatibility with the most common computers. Several practical examples from industry with computer and user cost are given. This volume consists of 20 chapters and begins with a description of ALSA, a general purpose finite element computer program for accurate large order structural analysis. The discussion then turns to BEFE, a general purpose program for the static analysis of structures and solids using the finite element method, the boundary element method, or a combination of the two. The following chapters focus on other computer programs such as BEWAVE, CASTEM, FEMFAM, FEMPAC, and OSTIN for applications ranging from finite element analysis to seismic analysis. This book will be a useful resource for practitioners in scientific and industrial disciplines such as mechanical or civil engineering, informatics, applied mathematics, and computer science.

Book Synopsis Selection of Structural Analysis Computer Programs by : L. V. Andrew
Download or read book Selection of Structural Analysis Computer Programs written by L. V. Andrew and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of computerised techniques of structural analysis is now standard in many branches of engineering. There is, however, a wide range of programs available both commercially and within individual organisations. These programs differ in their capabilities and in their costs and ease of use. The potential user may experience considerable difficulty in selecting a program that is appropriate to his particular class of work. The paper by Mr. Andrew describes in detail the technical and administrative course of action that has been adopted by a major industrial organization to select and implement programs that are appropriate to its work. Mr. Taig presents a similar discussion but with perhaps more emphasis on technical issues. Papers presented at the 47th Structures and Materials Panel Meeting, Florence, Italy, September 1978. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised and significantly expanded edition contains a rigorous examination of key concepts, new chapters and discussions within existing chapters, and added reference materials in the appendix, while retaining its classroom-tested approach to helping readers navigate through the deep ideas, vast collection of the fundamental methods of structural analysis. The authors show how to undertake the numerous analytical methods used in structural analysis by focusing on the principal concepts, detailed procedures and results, as well as taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of each method and sphere of their effective application. The end result is a guide to mastering the many intricacies of the range of methods of structural analysis. The book differentiates itself by focusing on extended analysis of beams, plane and spatial trusses, frames, arches, cables and combined structures; extensive application of influence lines for analysis of structures; simple and effective procedures for computation of deflections; introduction to plastic analysis, stability, and free and forced vibration analysis, as well as some special topics. Ten years ago, Professor Igor A. Karnovsky and Olga Lebed crafted a must-read book. Now fully updated, expanded, and titled Advanced Methods of Structural Analysis (Strength, Stability, Vibration), the book is ideal for instructors, civil and structural engineers, as well as researches and graduate and post graduate students with an interest in perfecting structural analysis.

Book Synopsis High Performance Computing in Structural Engineering by : Hojjat Adeli
Download or read book High Performance Computing in Structural Engineering written by Hojjat Adeli and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-11-30 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-performance multiprocessor computers provide new and interesting opportunities to solve large-scale structural engineering problems. However, the development of new computational models and algorithms that exploit the unique architecture of these machines remains a challenge. High Performance Computing in Structural Engineering explores the use of supercomputers with vectorization and parallel processing capabilities in structural engineering applications. The book focuses on the optimization of large structures subjected to the complicated, implicit, and discontinuous constraints of commonly used design codes and presents robust parallel-algorithms for analysis of these structures. The authors apply the algorithms to and analyze the performance of minimum weight designs of large, steel space trusses and moment-resisting frames, with or without bracings, consisting of discrete standard shapes. They clearly show that adroit and judicious use of vectorization techniques can improved the speedup of an optimization algorithm, and that parallel processing can lead to even further speedup. With its review of the necessary background material, generous illustrations, and unique content, this is the definitive resource for the analysis and optimization of structure on shared-memory multiprocessor computers. By extension, High Performance Computing in Structural Engineering will prove equally valuable in distributed computing on a cluster of workstations

Book Synopsis Software Systems for Structural Optimization by : H.R. Hörnlein
Download or read book Software Systems for Structural Optimization written by H.R. Hörnlein and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbert Hornlein, Klaus Schittkowski The finite element method (FEM) has been used successfully for many years to simulate and analyse mechanical structural problems. The results are accepted or rejected by means of comparison of state variables (stresses, displacements, natural frequencies etc.) and user requirements. In further analyses the design variables will be updated until the user specifications are met and the design is feasible. This is the primary aim of the design process. On this set of feasible designs, the additional requirement given by an objective function (e.g. weight, stiffness, efficiency, etc.) defines the structural optimization problem. In recent years more and more finite element based analysis systems were ex tended and offer now optimization modules. They proceed from the design model as defined for structural analysis, to perform an internal adaption of design pa rameters based on formal mathematical methods. Despite of many common features, there are significant differences in the selected optimization strategy, the current implementation and the numerical results.
